    For Parents and Teachers:

Good handwriting is an attainable .It is a skill and one of the basic tools for attaining scholastic

excellence. It needs a scientific approach. Children with poor handwriting not only miss learning

opportunities but also suffer the lack of self-esteem.

In most of the schools teachers focus on the letters of the alphabet, numerals and their shapes without

paying any attention to the scientific means of achieving these shapes. There are means and methods of

    making handwriting good and attractive.

It is not advisable to make children to start the writing of numerals and the letters of the alphabet

directly without exposing them to the much needed pre-writing activities.

Good handwriting has three qualities: : clearness (or legibility), swiftness (or fluency) and comeliness(or

beauty).Lets attain these qualities through this practice book.

To facilitate the use and holding of the writing tool (Pen, pencil, crayons etc) it is suggested to practice

some pre-writing activities. some of these are:

    1.

Twisting open the caps of tooth paste packs using the thumb-middle finger /index fingercombination.

    2. Pinching and sealing a zip using the thumb-middle finger /index finger combination.3. Counting beans and beads. Encourage the learners to pick up beans and beads one by one and

arrange them in the shape of the numerals as shown here. Ensure that the children learn to pick

the beans and beads by using their thumb-middle finger /index finger combination

    4. Threading beads using the thumb-middle finger /index finger combination.Step 1:

Handwriting involves the use of a writing tool like pencil, pen or crayons. It is suggested that learners

should use crayons or soft pencils at this stage.

The first most subs kill is to hold the pencil (writing tool) with proper grip. The best way to hold the

pencil is to keep it supported by the thumb-middle finger combine with the index finger on top of it.Just

hold the thumb and the middle finger in the position required for pinching. Let not the thumb and the

middle finger pres hard against each other.

Never press too hard on the pen or pencilbut

    i) hold it as lightly as possible.

ii) hold it at an angle of about 45 degrees to the writing line.

    ACTIVITY 1: Pen -Skating

Pen Skating: Holding the crayon pencil/pen as lightly as possible allow the crayon , pencil, or pen to

skate across the paper in any direction without trying to produce any desired shape or pattern. Here is

a specimen of the Crayon- skating and Pen-Skating Practice:

CAUTION: Never press too hard on the pen or pencilbut hold it as lightly as possible.

It is advisable to provide the crayons, colour pencils and paper to the learner and allow him to do

whatever colouring activity s/he wants to do. No pictures and/or designs need to be provided.

Let the learner simply use the crayons/pencil colours for developing the grip and learnngi the required

body part movements and the strokes.

Lets know and understand that whenever and however the learner uses the crayons to make any

type of mark on the paper s/he is writing ( i.e. practicing a writing stroke).Be it the left to right

movement, the right to left movement ,the to bottom or the bottom to top movement of the crayon

and the hands he is attaining the sub-skills for writing.

PRACTICE EXERCISE: Carry on three crayon skating exercises and three colour pencil skating exercises

    given below:

    Crayon-Skating

    Pencil- Skating

    ACTIVITY 2: Clockwise- Anticlockwise whorls

The direction (Clockwise- Anticlockwise) you take to form a letter of the alphabet is very important for

attaining good handwriting. Some letters are formed (must be formed) by taking the clockwise direction

and vise a versa. Lets practice both the direction by forming whorls. A whorl is a pattern made by a

curved line that forms a rough circle, with smaller circles inside bigger ones. Here are specimens of a

clockwise and an anti-clockwise whorl .

    ACTIVITY 3: Forming patterns;

Patterns are usually the parts of which letters are made. Lets practice making

some basic patterns that facilitate the writing of numerals and letters of the

    English alphabet.

    ACTIVITY 3: Writing the letters of the English alphabet and the numerals;

It is useful to begin with the practice of writing the small letters before the Capital

    letters.

For the sake of convenience we categorise the letters of the English alphabet into

    three groups:

    Group I: The Majors (14)

    a, c , e , i , m , n, o, r , s , u , v, w, x, z

    Group II: The Ascenders (7)

    b , d , f, h , k , l , t ,

    Group III: The Decenders (5)

    g , j , p , q , y

Contrary to the common opinion, loops do not necessarily give greater speed in writing . In many cases

the pen has to travel more than in loopless script.
