HANDRAIL & STAIR COMPLIANCE GUIDELINES

The following Fast Tread® Handrail & Stair Compliance Guideline has been created to provide a basic outline of FTI Group’s interpretation of the Building Code of Australia/National Construction Code (BCA/NCC) & Australian Standard AS1428 and to professionally fulfil our obligation to our clients to flag any compliance issues prior to construction stage.

In the following Handrail & Stair Compliance Guideline, with reference to BCA 2016 V1 & V2, BCA 2019 V1 & V2 and AS1428.1-2009, we cover the following:

a. Heights

i. Minimum & Maximum

• The minimum height any riser can be is 115mm

• The maximum height any riser can be is 190mm

ii Variation

• Adjacent risers, or between adjacent goings, is no greater than 5mm; and

• The largest and smallest riser within a flight, or the largest and smallest going within a flight, does not exceed 10mm

b. Layback

• The stair riser may be vertical or have a splay backwards up to a maximum 25mm

c. Quantities

• No more than 18 nor less than 2 risers

2. GOINGSa. Minimum & Maximum Length

• The minimum length of any going is 250mm

• The maximum length of any going is 355mm

b. Variation

• Adjacent goings, is no greater than 5mm; and

• The largest and smallest going within a flight, does not exceed 10mm

4. LANDINGS

• The minimum unobstructed height from line or stair nosing to ceiling is 2000mm or 1980mm at doorways

BCA – refer to clause D1.6 Dimensions of exits and paths of travel to exits.

AS1428 – refer to clause 6.2


• Maximum gradient of 1:50

• Not less than 750mm long

BCA – refer to clause D2.14 Landings

5. HAND RAILa. Clearance

i. Door Encroachment

• Maximum encroachment into required width of exit = 500mm

BCA – refer to clause D2.20


ii. Knuckle Clearance

• Minimum clearance between a handrail and an adjacent wall or other obstruction shall not be less than 50mm.

AS1428 – refer clause 12(h) & Figure 29 (in part)

iii. Clear Width

• The minimum clearance between handrail and any obstruction is 1000mm

b. Height

i. Stairs

• Minimum height is 865mm(from nosing line)

• Maximum height is 1000mm(from nosing line)

ii. Landings

• Minimum height is 865mm

• Maximum height is 1000mm

• If length is 500mm or greater, height must be 1000mm.

c. Terminations

• Continue past the last riser 1 x full going plus a minimum of 300mm horizontally and return 180degrees.

AS1428 – refer clause 11.2(d & e) and Figure 26(A) of clause 11.1

d. Openings

• Fire-isolated Stair Ways (where horizontal rails are used)

– A 460mm sphere must not be able to pass through any opening

• Non fire-isolated Stair Ways - or where required as an accessible stair

- A 125mm sphere must not be able to pass through any opening (other than the heel of the stair)

e. Returns

• Handrails must maintain a consistent height as they transition from stair to landing to stair

• No Vertical drops or change in elevation

• Minimum landing length from face of the first riser of the upper flight to the outer wall or any obstruction. = 1 x going + ½ diameter of handrail + 1000mm (excludes handrail to outside of landing or other obstructions such as hydrants etc)

AS1428 – refer to clause 11.2(c), 12(e.). ]
