    Handout #6 - Interview Project: What Does an Excellent Interviewer Do?

    CATEGORY An Excellent Interviewer An OK Interviewer A Poor Interviewer

    Preparation Before the interview, the interviewer choses a topicand prepares several related questions to ask. Shechoses those questions carefully, thinking of how theperson being interview might respond. She alsothinks about possible follow-up questions.

    Before the interview, the inteviewer chosesa topic and prepares a couple of questionsto ask. These questions are generallyrelated to the topic of the interview, but arenot specific to the person beinginterviewed.

    The interviewer does not prepare anyquestions before the interview.

    Setting Up

    theInterview

    The interviewer explains to the person why she wants

    to do an interview, shares the subject she is going toask about, tells the person how the interview will beused, and asks the person's permission to do theinterview.

    The interviewer asks permission to do the

    interview and explains why she wants to doit. However, she does not share the subjector how the interview will be used.

    The interviewer surprises the person

    she wants to interview and just beginsasking questions.

    Politeness The interviewer never interrupts or hurries the personbeing interviewed and thanks him/her for being willingto be interviewed.

    The interviewer sometimes interrupts orhurries the person being interviewed andthanks her/him for being willing to beinterviewed.

    The interviewer often interrupts orhurries the person being interviewedand/or forgets to thank the person.

    Follow-upQuestions

    The interviewer listens carefully to the person beinginterviewed and asks several follow-up questionsbased on what the person said. If she is not surewhat the person meant, she asks for clarification.

    The interviewer asks a couple of follow-upquestions based on what s/he thinks theperson means (but isn't sure the personactually has said it).

    The student does not ask any follow-up questions based on what theperson said.

    Notetaking The interviewer maintains focus on the person ratherthan on the occasional notes she takes. Most notesare made immediately after the interview so facts,quotes, and information are not lost.

    The interviewer takes lots of notes duringthe interview. No additional notes aretaken.

    The interviewer takes no notes duringor after the interview.

    Evaluatingthe

    Interview

    The interviewer accurately and fluently describes whathappened during the interview. She describes whatworked well and what didn't work.

    The interviewer describes some of whathappened during the interview. Shedescribes what went well -- but does notdescribe what did not go well.

    The interviewer does not describewhat happened at the interview in away that makes sense to the hearer.

    Telling toOthers theStory thatwas Told

    The interviewer accurately and fluently retells thestory told to her, using accurate quotations and factsdiscovered in the interview.

    The interviewer retells the story told to her,but does not use accurate quotations orfacts discovered in the interview.

    The interviewer does not retell thestory in a way that makes sense tothe hearer.

    Writing theStory thatwas Told

    The interviewer uses what was told to her in theinterview to write a story that is well organized andcontains accurate quotations and facts taken from theinterview.

    The interviewer's written story is not wellorganized, but it does contain accuratequotations and facts taken from theinterview.

    The interviewer's written story islacking facts and quotations from theinterview and is not well organized.
