CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Welcome to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program at WAU! As part of your educational experience, you will have the benefit of being trained in our own Maryland state certified Community Counseling Center (CCC) located in the psychology department’s office suite. The CCC is equipped for videotaping and monitoring of individual or group counseling session. Second year graduate students must apply directly to CCC’s licensed director or Campus Counseling Center to obtain supervised counseling hours. As you develop professionally by interacting with our competent and caring faculty and participating in our supervised Practicum and Clinical Internship experiences, you will discover the personal satisfaction of helping others to overcome emotional and mental difficulties. Grant Leitma, Ph.D. Chair/Psychology Department

ADMISSION POLICIES The School of Graduate and Professional Studies, in conjunction with Washington Adventist University’s Department of Psychology, offers two masters of arts degree programs: 39 hours MA Counseling Psychology and a 60 hour MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling Licensure Track Program (LCPC). EXPECTATIONS OF GRADUATE STUDENTS

Grade Policy As an institution of higher education rooted in the Seventh-Day Adventists tradition, Washington Adventist University is committed to the search for truth – a search that requires careful compliance with the principles of academic integrity in the discovery, clarification, and dissemination of all information. This commitment to truth assumes that each member of the campus community adhere to the highest standards of honesty and integrity in the completion of his or her academic requirements. The Academic Integrity Policy set forth below describes the responsibilities of students, faculty and the Provost. It also defines and gives examples of academic dishonesty, describes the consequences for violations of academic integrity, and provides an appeals process. Finally, the policy is intended to be both educational and redemptive.

Student Responsibilities:

• Be familiar with and uphold the WAU Academic Integrity Policy and the policy of each of their instructors. • Take responsibility to protect academic integrity in their own work and in the university community. • Avoid both dishonest practices and the appearance of dishonesty. • Make the necessary effort to ensure their work is not used by others. • Be prepared to offer verification of work and demonstrate abilities in a monitored setting.

Faculty Responsibilities:

• Be familiar with and uphold the WAU Academic Integrity Policy. • Include, in every course outlines, academic integrity policies relating to the particular course. • Discuss course policies on the first day of each class and reaffirm the importance of academic integrity within

the educational process. • File with the provost a written report of all instances of academic dishonesty (as determined by the

instructor after information discussions with student, even if resolved internally within department) with a copy for the student (as more particularly set forth in the Procedures).

Provost Responsibilities:

• Chair Academic integrity Council (as non-voting member except to break a tie vote). • Maintain student files including all Reports of Academic Dishonesty. • Refer all multiple reports of academic dishonesty to Academic Integrity Council. • Refer all XF grades to the registrar.

Academic Dishonesty: Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited, to the following: Cheating: Intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. Examples of cheating may include but not limited to:

• Sharing answers or collaborating with another student on any academic exercise unless specifically authorized by the instructor.

• Possessing unauthorized notes, study sheets, or other materials during an examination or other academic exercise.

Fabrication: Intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise. Examples of fabrication include but are not limited to:

• Changing or attempting to change academic records without proper authorization. • Altering documents after signatures have been obtained. • Forging of signatures on any document. • Obtaining unauthorized files or accounts. • Facilitating academic dishonesty: Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another

to violate any provision of this Code. • Providing inaccurate information, misleading information, or omission of information on a

Washington Adventist University application shall constitute a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Other: Any other instance that undermines or has the potential to undermine academic integrity.

CONSEQUENCES: Violations of academic integrity may be imposed singularly or in any combination. Possibilities include:

• Reduction in or failing assignment grade. • Reduction in course grade. • XF grade (see explanation below). • Academic Suspension from school including XF grade in course (right of appeal in the following

semester). • Academic Dismissal from school including XF grade in course (no right of appeal). • Revocation of degree.

PROCEDURES:

1. Upon suspicion of academic dishonesty, the instructor shall, within 10 school days after discovery, hold an information discussion with the student about the incident, try to reach resolution and, if appropriate, recommend a consequence to the student. This meeting should be promptly documented with a memo from the instructor to the student with a copy to the Provost and department chair.

2. If the student elects to appeal the instructor’s decision, then within 10 days after the instructor’s memo, the student shall meet with the department chair to discuss the incident, try to reach resolution, and if appropriate, the department chair will assign the same or a different consequence. If the teacher and the department chair are the same individual, then this second discussion will take place with another full-time faculty member in the department. This meeting should be promptly documented with a memo from the instructor to the student with a copy to the Provost.

3. If the student elects to appeal the department’s decision, the student may, within 10 days after the Departmental memo, appeal the situation to the Academic Integrity Council.

4. The Academic Integrity Council shall promptly investigate the facts of the situation and hear formally from the student and the instructor. The student shall be entitled to one guest (which guest may not be a lawyer) at any and all appearances before the Academic Integrity Council. If the Academic Integrity Council agrees with the fact findings of the department, it will affirm the Departmental decision. If the Academic Integrity Council disagrees, in whole or in part, with the fact findings of the Department, the Academic Integrity Council may modify the consequences to include any consequences (equal, lesser, or greater than that of the department).

5. Until a final decision has been reached (whether within the department or by the Academic Integrity Council), the student shall remain an active member of the class in which the alleged instance of dishonesty occurred. In the event the student elects to drop or withdraw from the class, the alleged act of academic dishonesty will be pursued to its conclusion and any final consequence (including assignment of an XF grade, suspension, dismissal, or expulsion) shall be unaffected by such drop or withdrawal.

XF GRADE: The grade of “XF” is intended to denote a failure to accept and exhibit the fundamental value of academic integrity. The XF grade shall be recorded on the student’s transcript with the notation “failure due to academic dishonesty.” The XF grade shall be treated in the same manner as a “F” for purposes of computing a grade point average, course repeatability and determination of academic standing. No student with an “XF” grade on their transcript shall be permitted to run for or hold any office in any student organization or serve as a member of any campus committee. The student may file a petition with the Academic Integrity Council to replace an “XF” grade with an “F.” The decision to approve or deny the petition shall rest solely with the Academic Integrity Council which shall consider the following minimum criteria:

a) At the time the petition is received, at least 12 months have lapsed since the “XF” grade was imposed or since a prior petition for the same action was denied;

b) An essay submitted by the student with the petition adequately explains why the grade should be changed; and

c) The student has not been found responsible of any other act of academic dishonesty or similar disciplinary offense at the University or any other institution.

The Academic Integrity Council is not obligated to approve any such petition. REVOCATION OF DEGREE: An awarded degree may be revoked for violations of the academic integrity policy of Washington Adventist University which occur prior to the award of the degree, but are not discovered after the degree has been awarded, where the violation is sufficient to justify the awarding of an XF grade, or the suspension or permanent dismissal of the student. In all instances, the investigation of a matter of academic integrity after the rewarding of a degree shall be conducted by the Academic Integrity Committee and revocation of a degree shall be subject to both two-thirds majority vote of the full membership of the Academic Integrity Committee and a two-thirds majority vote of a quorum of the faculty meeting. ACADEMIC GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE: Students who feel they have received prejudiced academic evaluation are entitled to appeal for an impartial review and reconsideration of their cases. Procedures to be followed are:

1. Students should go first to the teacher involved to discuss the matter. 2. They may next appeal to the chair of the department. If the teacher involved is the department

chair, then the chair must appoint another faculty member in the department or a related department to hear the student’s case.

3. If a satisfactory decision has not been reached, the case may be presented in writing to the dean of the school after which students can appeal in writing or in person to the Academic Appeals Committee.

4. The student can appeal the decision of the Academic Appeals Committee to the provost. The decision of the provost is final.

5. Any appeal of a grade must be initiated within the first semester following the awarding of the grade in question.

ACADEMIC PROBATION Academic Probation: A student enrolled in any of the undergraduate schools/programs whose cumulative grade point average (GPA) is less than 2.00 at the end of the first semester or any subsequent semester will automatically be placed on academic probation. The probationary status is communicated in writing to the student and the adviser. Academic Suspension: Any student whose cumulative GPA remains below a 2.00 for two consecutive semesters will automatically be placed on academic suspension for one academic year. During the suspension period the student may not register for classes at WAU. A suspended student may appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee to be reinstated at WAU after two semester excluding summer term. Students wishing to have their cases reconsidered must initiate the appeals process.

Class Attendance Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories is required. Missing instruction for any reason may lower the class grade or otherwise adversely affect a student’s standing in class as stated in the instructor’s syllabus. A student who is not present for at least 80 percent of class instruction, during an academic session, or semester, may be administratively withdrawn by the instructor.

Written Endorsement Policy Students who desire faculty recommendation for employment, practicum/internship placement, and educational admission need to provide faculty with the following information: Students goals and plans, professional interest, course title and grades earned with the faculty while at WAU, graduation date, contact name, employment site or school degree program and mailing address or email.

CPSY 661 – Psychopharmacology of Addictions [3] Prerequisite: CPSY 630 or permission of the chair This course provides sufficient background in neuroanatomy and physiology so that students can comprehend the necessary details of drug action. It also presents psychopharmacology in the context of the behavioral disorders they are designed to treat, not necessarily by traditional drug classification. Psychopharmacology is presented as it pertains to familiar disorders strengthening the students’ understanding of the physiology and neurochemistry underlying the disorders as well as the approaches to their treatment. Each disorder is discussed from a historical context along with diagnostic criteria and descriptions of typical cases. In addition, what is presently known about the underlying pathology of each disorder is carefully described. CPSY 665 – Psychotherapy in Alcohol & Drug Disorders [3] Prerequisite: CPSY 630 or permission of the chair This course will cover the diagnosis of substance use disorders based on the DSM and ICD criteria. The application of one or more models for substance abuse disorders and the treatment of mental disorders co-occurring with substance use disorders will be emphasized. Professional counselor preparation at WAU is distinguished by three fundamental factors. The counseling faculty believes that choosing to study at WAU is an excellent choice because of: (1) our philosophical orientation, (2) opportunity for service, and (3) biblical counseling principles.

CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING MA PROGRAM POLICY

Academic Conferences Graduate students are expected to attend at least one academic conference each year they are in residence at WAU. Schedules of conferences are posted in the psychology department bulletin board.

Academic Performance Evaluation of student’s academic performance is the responsibility of the course instructors. Students must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress to continue in the program. Grades of B or higher are considered satisfactory. Students are allowed only one grade of C for the entire graduate program. A student who receives a grade of C in more than one course will be placed on academic probation and required to repeat the additional C grade the next time the course is offered and obtain a grade of B or higher. Students who receive a D or F (a failing grade) in a course will be placed on academic probation and must repeat the course the next time the course is offered and obtain grade B or higher. Students who receive more than two grades lower than a C will be dismissed from their Program of Study. No student may carry more than two incomplete (I) grades at any time in the program. All (I) grades must be resolved within eight weeks after the original course grade was issued.

Clinical Progress The psychology department will review your clinical progress each semester and throughout the MA program. The field of counseling demands outstanding intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. Therefore, we may ask you to suspend your academic/clinical work if the opinion of the psychology faculty there is evidence of personal issues, outside of academic challenges, which may in some way become a hindrance to you becoming an effective professional counselor. Based upon semester evaluations by faculty, staff, and

onsite supervisors, we may require that you seek therapeutic help, remediation courses, or complete a psychological evaluation to resolve any personal issues that may interfere with your academic/clinical progress. Your well-being and that of the client is extremely important as you work toward the completion of your degree at WAU. See Appendix L for details.

Course Repeat Policy A course in which a grade below B is received may be repeated. Individual courses may be repeated only once. Students who obtain a failing grade for a repeated course will be dismissed from their Program of Study.

Criminal Background Check Many agencies require a criminal background check before a graduate student is permitted to start the practicum or internship. Since we serve a vulnerable population, the state of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will require a background check before licensure is approved. It is the responsibility of every student to ensure that they are cleared before applying for Practicum, Internship, or state licensure.

Departmentals Graduate students are encouraged to participate in monthly psychology departmental. Notifications of meetings are sent by email to all undergraduate and graduate students. Departmentals are organized to encourage students to develop a sense of career mindedness within the discipline of counselor education.

Liabil ity Insurance Students are required to obtain personal counseling liability insurance through the American Counseling Association (ACA) or American Psychological Association (APA).

Licensing Requirements & State Exams Students are to be aware of state licensing requirements if they intend to practice in Maryland or in another state ( see Appendix E). Students are to prepare for the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE) given during the last semester of the 60 hour program. Students are encouraged to purchase and read Rosenthal’s Encyclopedia of Counseling to prepare for the CPCE and for the National Counselor Exam (NCE). Students are responsible for understanding and application of the eight core competencies for counselors in preparation for the National Counselor Exam (NCE).

Personal Counseling Personal experience in counseling is an important educational benefit. We need to ensure that every student has properly dealt with any personal issues that may interfere with their counselor training. Before students are permitted to start Practicum CPSY 680 they must provide documented evidence to indicate

they have completed five hours of personal counseling at their expense. This requirement is considered a part of the students’ professional education program to become a highly effective counselor. Students need to be aware of their own mental health issues in order to function in a competent and ethical manner. The form can be found in Appendix H.

. Practicum/Internship Placement Students are to contact the placement site coordinator before the end of the first semester to secure a field experience site and later practicum and internship sites as well. Madge Quesenberry is our placement coordinator and can be reached at 301-653-6388 or [email protected].

Psi Chi Students are encouraged to join Psi Chi, The International Honor Society for Psychology for recognition of strong academic scholarship by going to this site: www.psichi.org.

Philosophical Orientation National health surveys indicate that more people suffer from mental disorders than cancer, heart disease and stroke combined in the United States. The counseling faculty believes that a strong academic and spiritual foundation is necessary to meet the professional challenges that lie ahead.

Students are encouraged to consider their future profession as a personal ministry of healing. The faculty believes that counselor education that integrates faith and learning provides the foundation for a successful ministry in the professional and private lives of students. We encourage students to prayerfully join with heavenly agencies for the restoration and healing of minds as they enter the counseling profession. A personal ministry of healing is wonderfully illustrated in Matthew 9:35-38.

“Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then he said to His disciples, The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray The Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

After reading the above scripture, we are not surprised that Jesus is referred to as the “Great Physician” and the “Wonderful Counselor.” Ellen White, an important religious and health advocate and writer, describes the work of Jesus as the “Healer of Souls” and the “Physician of Souls.” People sought out Jesus because “From Him flowed a stream of healing power and in body, mind and soul men were made whole.” 1 We understand from scripture that fundamentally sickness results when we are out of harmony with God’s laws. When Jesus healed the sick they were made to feel whole again. From the Christian perspective, the deepest healing occurs at the spiritual level. It is only the Great Physician who can heal and renew the human heart. Therefore, our approach is to use a Christian-Holistic orientation for counseling. Students are encouraged to assess their client’s physical, spiritual, and mental health. A “lifestyle assessment” is used to determine the client’s level of holistic functioning. The results from this type of assessment help the counselor discover their client’s sources of anxiety and/or discomfort. Students may truly experience wheat it means to be a “Physician of the Soul.”

Opportunity for Service The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area offers an excellent opportunity for service. Opportunities for internships, practicum and field experiences are plentiful in the national capital area. As a result, students will have the opportunity to fulfill WAU’s motto “Gate Way to Service.” Counseling preparation is best achieved when service and study are properly balanced. We are told that “His (Jesus) life is an example of obedience and service.” 2 WAU students have found rewarding practicum/internship experiences with various private hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and community mental health centers. Counseling is a helping and human service profession. Students who succeed at counseling are those who are compassionate and have a good listening ear. The counseling profession provides opportunities to help others to become more effective and productive at work, in school, and with their families. As you help others to achieve their potential, you will feel a personal sense of gratification from gaining insight into human behavior. You will observe with satisfaction how your clients improve emotionally and behaviorally. As a human service profession, the counselor is intellectually challenged to stay current by understanding the changes that take place in such related fields as biology, neurosciences, and medicine.

Biblical Principles of Counseling The counseling faculty fundamentally believes that the Bible provides the ultimate principles for healing. The Bible supplies us with at least thirty specific promises for healing. Consequently, students are encouraged to treat people with compassion and sympathy regardless of their cultural background or religious persuasion. Jesus was so sensitive to the emotional and physical needs of others that His life exemplified the healing process. Jesus’ ministry of healing is a great example of anyone pursuing a career in personal counseling. The counseling profession means that students learn to accept people for who they are and treat each client as a unique child of God with infinite possibilities. They learn how to help others to overcome mental barriers and rigid behavioral patterns. Even though at times the work may be frustrating they know that Jesus is their personal counselor, helper, and friend. Therefore, a life of personal prayer becomes essential. “In the work of soul-winning (teaching, counseling), great tact and wisdom are needed. The Savior never suppressed the truth, but He uttered it always in love. In His intercourse with others, He exercised the greatest tact, and He was always

kind and thoughtful. He was never rude, never needlessly spoke a severe word, Never gave unnecessary pain to a sensitive soul. He did not ensure human weakness. He fearlessly denounced hypocrisy, unbelief, and iniquity, but tears were in His voice as He uttered His scathing rebukes. He never made truth cruel, but ever manifested a deep tenderness for humanity. Every soul was precious in His sight. He bore Himself with divine dignity; yet He bowed with the most tender compassion and regard to every member of the family of God. He saw in all, souls whom it was His mission to save.” 3 The patience and love towards others that Jesus expressed is an example for anyone entering the counseling profession. If Jesus is our example, then the Christian counselor will desire to reach out to those who are suffering mentally and emotionally. At WAU the counseling faculty encourages graduate students to explore and study the depths of the human condition and thereby learn how to help others to achieve inner peace and happiness. “Then saith He unto the graduate counseling students at WAU, the number of sick are vast but he counselors are few. Pray to the Lord who created us in His image, that He will inspire many trained counselors to go out and heal the people.” References 1White, E. (1942). The Ministry of Healing (p.17).
