Career Development Cycle
The development of a good career starts from the thought process of assessing one’s own capabilities. This is
done by a SWOT analysis. This results in a self appraisal to build an awareness of own strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and challenges. For example a student aspiring to join a course in engineering should have
obvious mathematical skills. Once your ambitions match the skills you are possesing, next attempt should
be to narrow down your choice of available courses and institution. Once you choose the institution and
the course offered, you should definitely explore the scope of the course in more detail. One should find
out whether the curriculum covers the state-of-the art standards. A comprehensive picture of this matching
profiles may be obtained from the following description. Next we should find out the faculty strength and the
infrastructure of the institution. We should also find out whether the institute supports the placement process
through a placement or corporate relations department and whether separate training sessions towards the
successful objective of placement are provided. We should also explore the possibilities of higher learning at
the institute. A career aspirant should find out whether the institute has a system to encompass extramural
learning from experts in the chosen field.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT CYCLE
Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham 5
Perceptions on Building a Career through Amrita
A career aspirant may pursue several different lines of work over the course of professional life. The skills
acquired during the academic learning process lay the strong foundation for the future success in a chosen
career. As student, when completing the 12th grade or the graduation, a student may oneself ask the questions
like :
What is next for me ? What should I choose ? What should I do to get the right guidance? Which University
/ college should I join ? What are the advantages and also challenges related to a particular course of study ?
What are the prerequisite skills ?
Will I get a good career opening ? Are the faculty members proficient and experienced in imparting the training
for me ? Does the curriculum offered cover the knowledge requirements and pragmatic skills for getting a job ?
Does the syllabus match and adapt itself to the Indian and International standards ? Is the examination system
transparent and modern ? Will I get my degree and exam results in time ?
How disciplined are the routines of the learning process and environment ? Are there sessions to enhance my
knowledge outside the framework of formal syllabus ?
These are obvious questions asked by the youngsters coming out of schools after 12th and graduates coming
out of colleges.
When there are host of institutions offering many courses and career building options, the career aspirants are
enthusiastic about the choice of course and the institution.
This booklet on Career guidance gives you an idea about the present trend and options of career advancement
and the possible domains of work areas of students, choosing to study the courses here. This also gives an idea
of the prerequisites related to both academic and personal skills. Rightly said, the comprehensive description
answers all the questions related to the process of career building after studying at Amrita School of Arts and
Sciences, Kochi.

Corporate Communication
An aspiring commerce graduate should put in focussed efforts, to assimilate knowledge, both theoretical and
practical. This should be done by referring to case studies. A student should try to develop general knowledge
on commerce, industry, business, economics, finance, marketing, science and technology trends. Later the
graduates may possibly take up advanced learning or career for teaching, research or professional management. For
these, they should try to develop reasoning and quantitative aptitudes, verbal, communicative and coordination
skills, writing skills, interpersonal and group communication, leadership, positive attitude, observation skills. A
successful career in commerce calls for committed hard work and time management, positive interpersonal skills
and high EQ.
Both print and visual segments of the media industry have experienced exponential growth in the last decade,
resulting in tremendous scope for job opportunities in the media sector. Advancements in the I.T. field have
brought forth paradigm changes in the delivery modes of media communication. Our learning and teaching
methodologies have aligned itself to imparting all the pragmatic skills required for a good career in the media.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA INDUSTRY

calls for leadership qualities , observation, coordination skills, committed hard work and positive attitudes
from a professional.
Creative and lateral thinking abilities and skills for generation of alternatives and suspension of judgement have
to be developed during the studentship as well as throughout the career. For a career in advertising, animation
and applied and graphic arts one should develop creativity and visual thinking ability, skills for ideation, quick
response to new concepts.
