UEA students elect 17 student officers every year: 4 who work full-time and 13 part-time volunteers. They represent your views to the University, to the local community and nationally to improve your life as a student. As well as working to fulfill their manifesto pledges and respond to student feedback, officers make the changes that Union Council vote for (see p.16). Officers are also here to consider your ideas and lobby on issues you raise, so get in touch with your suggestions.

Last year officers: won the option of cash bursaries for eligible UEA students worth up to £3000; made a lot of progress on exam feedback, with many schools piloting exam feedback this year; and campaigned to save the UEA School of Music…the school was closed, but we had 10,000 signatures of support from all around the world, showing a small group of students a huge amount of support!

All Union members (remember, all UEA students are members) can elect officers or run for office themselves. If you want to make a positive difference to the lives of UEA students then you will be a perfect candidate.

Course Reps are representatives for your school year, and Faculty Convenors are representatives for your faculty. Officers, Course Reps and Faculty Convenors sit on University committees where things can be changed about your degree. Union Council is made up of student representatives from clubs, societies and schools of

study. They vote on policy for the Union, which student officers and staff make reality. So tell a representative about the changes you want to see, because your feedback and suggestions can change your degree. You can speak to the Advice Centre (see p.20) if you have any concerns or worries relating to your course. Best of all, you can stand for election to be a Course Rep, Union Councillor, Faculty Convenor or a Student Officer! We have over 190 clubs and societies at the Union. These are groups run by student volunteers so that you can try things you’ve never done before or do the things that you enjoy.

Clubs are for sport, and we have over 60 different sports clubs for you to choose from, ranging from Capoeira to Korfball to Football. Societies are…for everything else! From knitting to politics to live music, there’s probably something for you. You can join a club or society any time of the year.

In line with UEA’s pioneering green agenda, your Union has been working hard to act on ethical and environmental issues across campus. Student led initiatives have included our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign, a Vegbox scheme, Go Green Week, and a campaign on ethical procurement and investment. This has culminated in the Union switching to the Co-op for ethical banking, winning the Gold Student Union Green Impact Award, and successfully lobbying the University to agree to affiliate with the Worker Rights Consortium which monitors university supply chains.
