Foreword

Selection of Components for a New Design is a very tedious and time-consuming task. Apart from considerable literature survey, several data sheets have to be analysed to make fruitful decisions. To avoid the Engineer running from pillar to post in search of right components, this Hand Book has been prepared by the Component Approval Group. Various Research Organisations and Industries universally adopt the Preferred Components concept, which promotes Standardisation and Type reduction, cutting down cost and design cycle time. I am sure that the R&D Engineers will find this Manual a handy and useful reference for their day-to-day work. Updates will be provided periodically. I would request our young Engineers to give feed backs to our Component Approval Group to update this booklet.

1. Chip Resistors, Thick film, SMD The Chip Resistors are available in different Sizes. Power Ratings, Temperature coefficients and Tolerances. The preferred 15 Digit Codes for these Resistors are listed in Table 1. The Chip Resistor case sizes are listed in Table 2. The guidelines given below may be followed while selecting these resistors for New Designs.

• Tight Tolerances are associated with tight Temperature Coefficients (TC) and the cost will be correspondingly higher. Tuning and Timing circuits may need these precision resistors. Biasing and voltage divider circuits can generally be managed with loose tolerances and wider TCs. Zero ohm resistors used for interconnections shall be carefully chosen.

• Though it is desirable to choose smaller Chip sizes it shall be ascertained that suitable assembly facilities are available in house.

• The sizes 2512 for 1W / 2W, 2010 for 0.5W, 1206 for 0.125 / 0.25 W, 0805 for 0.1 / 0.125 W, and 0603 for 0.1 W are preferred at present.

• Component values shall be chosen from the relevant E series as given in Table 3 to ensure standardization, variety reduction and economy.

3. The maximum Working voltage is 50V for 0402 and 0603, 100V for 0805, 200V for 1206 and 1210, 350V for 2010 and 500V for 2512. The maximum overload voltage is double the above values.

4. The corresponding 15 digit code drawings may be referred for more information. 5. The approved manufacturers for the chip resistors with corresponding part

numbers against these codes are listed in the Component Data Base. 6. The xxxxxx is replaced by the corresponding resistor value. A resistor of value

1.2 KΩ is expressed as 120004. The last digit indicates the number of digits to be considered from the beginning and this gives the value in ohms. For example if the 6-digit number is 470003 the value is 470 ohms If the number is 470007 the

value is 4700000 ohms (4.7 MΩ).

2. E Series Values

The EIA (Electronic Industries Association) and other authorities worldwide specify standard values for resistors, commonly referred to as the "Preferred Value" system. Table-3 lists seven established number series, which are used as preferred values in Electronic Design. Each series is shown under an associated value of tolerance %. The number series under the 10% column is known as the E12 Series because there are 12 standard values within a decade range 5% utilize the E24 Series, 2% utilize the E48 Series and 1% uses E96 Series. 0.1%, 0.25% and 0.5% use E192 Series. The 20% E6 Series is seldom used. The 50% tolerance E3 Series is no longer used. Successive values within a decade series are related (approximately) by a factor of 12

√10 for the E12 Series, 24√10 for the E24 Series, 48√10 for the E48 Series, 96√10 for

the E96 Series and 192√10 for the E192 Series. Use of standard values is encouraged because stocking programs are designed around them. However, intermediate values can be special ordered where permitted.

Standard resistance values are obtained from the decade table by multiplying by powers of 10. As an example 133 can represent 13.3 ohms, 133 ohms, 1.33k, 13.3k and 1.33 Megohm.

3. Ceramic Chip Capacitors, SMD Different types of Dielectric material are used to get a variety of capacitors with various temperature coefficients and operating ranges. Table 4 below shows the nomenclature used to specify various dielectrics of capacitors. For example, Y5V means a capacitor

with low temperature limit of -30°C, high temperature limit of +85°C and a maximum

allowable capacitance change of +22% to -82% from 25°C (temperature coefficient). Table 5 gives the standard chip Capacitor sizes.

The E series values given in Table 3 are also applicable for the capacitors. However E12 series is commonly adopted by manufacturers for these Chip capacitors due to various considerations. The most commonly used types of Multi layer Ceramic chip Capacitors are described below. C0G (NP0): Has a very low dissipation factor of the order of 0.1% and are very stable over wide variations in temperature, frequency, voltage, and time. They are Class-I ceramic having Dielectric constants lower than 150. They have a wide operating

temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and a very low Temperature coefficient of ±30 ppm/°C. They exhibit Zero aging properties over time. Tolerances available for these Capacitance are B (0.1pf), C (0.25pf), D (0.5pf), F (1%), G (2%), J (5%), K (10%). NPO type capacitors are frequently used for precision timing, filtering, frequency setting, and

tuning circuits. Available Range: 0.5 pF to 0.012µF.

X7R: Are used when some capacitance variation is allowed and the dissipation factor is

not critical. The operating Temperature range is -55°C to +125°C. They are Class-II ceramics having dielectric constants in the range 600-4000. Typical aging rate is 25%

per decade hour The temperature coefficient is ±15%. The dissipation factor is around 25%. The standard capacitance tolerances are J (5%), K (10%) and M (20%). X7R type capacitors are frequently used for bypass, decoupling, filtering, frequency discrimination, timing, DC voltage blocking, voltage transient suppression, instrumentation, computers, telecommunications, and automotive electronics. Available

Range: 150 pF to 0.33µF.

Z5U: Dielectrics have the highest capacitance for their size. They are “High-K” Class-II dielectrics having dielectric constants in the range 4000 –18000. They have a higher aging rate of about 5% per decade hour. They have an operating temperature range of

only +10°C to +85°C and temperature coefficient of +22% to -56%. They are available in tolerances M (20%), Z (-20 /+80%), P (0 /+100%). The dissipation factor is around 4 %. Z5U type capacitors have applications in bypass, decoupling, transient suppression,

computers, and telecommunications. Available Range: 6800pF to 0.47µF
