4-H PHOTO JUDGING TIPS

Be sure to attend this photography workshop if you’ve ever considered showing photography at the fair. We will be learning what 4-H judges look for when judging photography. What is the rule of thirds? How do you choose your matting? How do you write a good 4-H goal? What impacts does lighting and position make when taking a photo? Find out on Sunday, November 22nd from 1:30-3:00 pm at our Photography Workshop. Bring your own device to take photos while at the workshop. Limited to 25 members, be sure to RSVP to Victoria at 641-923-2856 or [email protected]. Parents and club lead-ers are welcome to stay and learn. Our presenter Donna Bucsh, is a certified 4-H photography judge.

Afterschool Kids Club - Pets & Animals

DISCOVERING PETS IN 4-H

Rabbits, leopard gecko’s, butterflies, kittens, dogs, and a guinea pig. What do all of these animals have in common? These are the pets that have attended our After School Kids Club meetings for 3rd and 4th graders at the GHV & WH schools. We have learned about what these animals eat, where they live, and how to take care of them. We have had a lot of fun also learning about what kind of pet would work best for us and telling about the pets we already have.

One of the many highlights of our meetings is watching the life cycle of a butterfly. They started as caterpillars, turning into chrysalis and finally emerging as butterflies.

We were also excited to have Derek Lonne-man join one of our meetings. He showed us the animal pelts of all the different animals in our area. We enjoyed sharing stories of animals that we have seen where we live.

We were also able to take field trips to the Britt and Garner Vet clinics and learn the importance of working with a veterinary to make sure our animals are healthy.

Watch for spring Afterschool Kids club registration after Christmas break. Anyone can sign up for the spring session. It will be 8 weeks and we will discover “Forces of Nature”.

HOLLIDAY TREAT BAKING

Cookies & Candies Workshop - Dec. 7th

Want to make some Christmas goodies with 4-H friends? Be sure to attend our Cookies & Candy Workshop on Monday, December 7th from 5-8 pm at the First Lutheran Church in Britt. The cost to attend is $20 and includes the supplies for baking and pizza for supper.

We will learning about kitchen safety, mixing ingredients for exciting holiday treats, and take home the recipes and the treats from our evening of baking.

We are limited to the first 20 participants so be sure to sign up right away. Some recipes that we plan to try are pictured below.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE & FIRST TECH CHALLENGE The Blockhead’s, the FIRST Tech Challenge team, challenge this year is RES-Q, modeled after actual rescue situations faced by mountain explorers all over the globe. Their mission is to “reset” rescue beacons; deliver rescue climbers to a shelter; park on a mountain, and retrieve debris from the playing field. During FTC’s competition they will have

30 seconds of autonomous (pre-programmed play) robots where the robots need to repair the rescue beacons. After the 30 seconds, the team members will pick up the controls and have a 2 minute Driver-Controlled period. Here they will retrieve up to 5 debris and place them in the mountain goals or the floor goals. They may also scale the mountain to release climbers that will slide down a zip line to safety. The last 30 Seconds is called the End Game. They can earn bonus points by hanging the robot from the pull-up bar on the topmost part of the mountain and claiming the All Clear signal from their alliance. It is a very exciting, fast paced tournament. Check out our calendar and see if there is a date that works for you to check out our FIRST teams in action.

Tis the season for Jr. FLL, FLL and FTC Competitions. This year’s topic for Jr FLL and FLL is Waste Wise and Trash Trek. Our FLL teams need to solve a trash problem and present it to the Judg-es on tournament day, along with programing their robots to pick up LEGO trash and bring it in to recycle and reuse. Some trash problems the teams are working on are; recycling batteries properly, recycling old toys, reusing pizza boxes, and melting plastic bags down and making toys. Our teams are traveling all over to compete against other FLL teams across Iowa. What FIRST LEGO League teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. The skills they learn will last a lifetime. Our Jr FLL teams the Anchor Builders, Recyclinators, And LEGO Master Builders are also working a ways to solve our trash problems. They need to look at trash in a whole new way, they will find out what making trash really means. Some ideas are using Milk Cartons to plant flowers, or egg cartons to plant seeds to start a garden. The will show off what they have learned at an EXPO at ISU for the State FLL Tournament in January.
