“A Challenging Opportunity!”

After graduating from Kent State University with a BS in EducationandbriefstintsteachingandcoachingatMagnoliaandRootstownHighSchools,

CliffFoustbecametheHeadFootballCoachatGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolin1951andretired28yearslaterin1979.Inthose28yearshedevelopedoneofthefinestfootballprograms

inOhioHighSchoolFootballhistory.WhenpeopleheardGarfieldHeightsthenameCliffFoustwasmentionednext.Thetwobecamesynonymous.

EachyearpeoplewantedtoknowhowCliffFoust’sGarfieldHeights’teamwasgoingtodo.He developed a program with hard work and integrity.

Hesurroundedhimselfwithcoacheswhowereeagertolearnandcoacheswhowerehisequalorbetter,and they learned from one another. The nucleus of his staff for many of those years were his cohorts Len

Brickman,FloydKonetandAndyKnazek.Garfield’sownFourHorseman.

While at GHHS Cliff’s teams won 8 league championships and he was named leagueCoachoftheYear10times.AftercoachingatGarfieldHeightsCliffcontinuedhiscoachingcareerat

University School. In his 43 years as a varsity football coach his overall record was 244-140-7.Many of his other accomplishments and awards include:

•1965GreaterClevelandFootballCoachesAssociationCoachoftheYear.

•1985ClevelandTouchdownClubLeeTresselAwardforservicetothesportoffootball.

•1989InductedintotheOhioHighSchoolFootballCoachesHallofFame.

•1993GreaterClevelandFootballCoachesAssociationGoldenDeedsAwardwinner.

•1997NFLFinalistfortheNationalHighSchoolFootballCoachoftheYearAward.

•2011InductedintotheCliffFoustAthleticHallofFameatGarfieldHeightsHighSchool.

CliffandhiswifePathavetwochildren,KimandMichaelandtwograndchildrenThetwohavebeenmarried59years.

Mike Arnold – Teacher/Coach

MikeArnoldwastheHeadWrestlingCoachatGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolfor28yearsandatthetimeonlythe9thHeadCoachsincetheprogramstartedin1930.Overhisthirtyplusyearsofcoachingwrestling,Mikehascoached192districtqualifiers,59statequalifiers,44stateplacers,12statefinalistsand5statechampions.Histeamshavewon1StateChampionship,1StateRunner-up,1DistrictChampionship,4DistrictRunner-ups,a3rd,4thand5thplaceintheStateDualMeet Tournament and an overall dual meet coaching record of 203 wins. As Head Coach at GHHS he earned 2 Time Greater ClevelandWrestlingCoachesandOfficialsCoachoftheYear,PlainDealerCoachoftheYear,OhioDivisionIICoachoftheYearand4-timeLELCoachoftheYear.HeisinthePioneerHighSchoolSportsHallofFame,theAshlandUniversitySportsHallofFameandmostrecentlyinductedintotheOHSAAWrestlingHallofFame.Afterplacingsecondin1973and1974intheNewYorkStateHSWrestlingtournamentandwinningaStateChampionshipwithhisPioneerCentralHSteamin1974MikewrestledforAshlandUniversity.AtAshlandhewasa4-timeNCAAqualifieranda3-timeNCAAAll-American.Mike,aretired30-yearteacheratGHHS,residesinTwinsburgandhastwoadultchildren,RayandNatalie.

Dennis Markiewicz – Coach

DennisMarkiewiczwastheHeadBaseballCoachatGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolfor15years.AsHeadCoachoftheBulldogDiamondMenhisteamswon6LakeErieLeagueChampionships,4SectionalChampionships,qualifiedfortheDistrictSemi-Finals5timesandwereDistrictrunner-ups4times.Dennishadanoverallrecordof201-157asHeadCoachatGHHS.Inthe15yeartenurehisteamshadwinningseasonsin13ofthe15years.Denniswasatirelessworkeringettinghisballplayersontothenextlevel.Over60ofhisstudent/athleteswentontoplaycollegebaseball.DennisisalsotheHeadFreshman Football Coach for the Bulldogs. In his 16 years as Head Frosh Coach his teams have won 7 Lake Erie League Titlesand3NortheastOhioConferenceLakeDivisionTitles.DennisiscurrentlytheHeadBaseballCoachathisalmamater,Holy Name High School. Entering his third year his teams have won two league championships and reached the Final Four inOhioin2011.AstheDistrictWideRegistrarandInvestigatorfortheGarfieldHeightsCitySchools,DennisstartedtheAJPProgramandisa“FoundingFather”oftheGYFTSProgram.Alongwiththat,Dennisisa“MasterFundraiser”.BesidesfundraisingforhisequipmentneedsandhismanyteamtripstoFloridaandtheCarolinas,DenniswasthepersoninstrumentalinsecuringtheTexasHold‘emCharityPokerEventatNauticafortheAthleticBoosterClub.TheBoosterClubhasearnedover$300,000fromthecharityeventoverthepastsevenyears.DennispreppedatHolyNameHighSchoolwherehestarredin football and baseball. From there he attended Cleveland State University and played baseball for the Vikings. Dennis lives inGarfieldHeightswithhiswifeKarenandhastwoadultchildren,AnthonyandKelly.

William “Sonny” Johnson III ‘98

SonnyJohnsonplayedbasketballforGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolfrom1997to1998andshattered12schoolrecordsalongwithbeingnamedMr.OhioBasketballfor1998,thehighesthonorastudent-athletecanachieveinOhiointerscholasticsports.Sonnyaveraged34pointspergamehisseniorseasonandscored52pointsinonegameand50inanotherwhileshooting62.3%fromthefield.Alongwithhisscoringprowesshehad28reboundsinonegameand357fortheseasonalongwith13steals in one game and 116 for the season. Sonny received numerous awards in his two years at GHHS. Besides being 1st teamallLELandtheLEL’sPlayeroftheYearin’97and’98,SonnywasthePlainDealerCuyahogaCountyPlayeroftheYear,thePDscoringchampionin’97and’98andthePDreboundingchampionin’98.HealsogarneredtheNortheastLakesDistrict1stteamhonorsalongwiththeNortheastDistrict’sCo-MVPhonorsin’98.Sonnywasnamed1stteamAll-OhiohisjuniorandseniorseasonsandHonorableMentionAll-Americanin’97and’98.HealsoreceivedtheprestigiousClevelandCavaliersNateThurmondAwardin1998.SonnywentontoplaybasketballforClevelandStateUniversityandOhioUniversity.AtOhioUniversitySonnywasnamedNational6thManoftheYear.AftergraduationfromOhioUniversity,Sonny returned to his alma mater to coach basketball and work as an Intervention Specialist. Sonny was named HeadBasketballCoachatGHHSin2006andturnedtheprogramintooneofthefinestinOhio.Insevenyearshehasa127-34recordwithoneLELTitleandfiveNOCTitlesand1appearanceintheState’sFinalFourin2011.SonnyresidesinGarfieldHeightswithhiswifeSianezandtheirfourchildrenSonny,Serina,MarcusandMia.

ATHLETIC INDUCTEESDr. Charles Blaugrund – Team Doctor

Dr.CharlesBlaugrundprovidedmedicalcareforGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolathletesandtheiropponentsduringthe1930’s,1940’sand1950’s.HewasapioneerinOhioHighSchoolinterscholasticsportshistoryinestablishingtheroleoftheteamphysicianforscholasticathletes.In1968,theGarfieldHeightsBoardofEducationofficiallydedicatedandnamedtheHighSchoolFootballFieldDr.CharlesBlaugrundField.In1957theGarfieldHeightsAmericanLegionPosthonoredhimasLegionManoftheYearforhisservicetothecommunity.In1995,hereceived,posthumously,theOhioOutstandingTeamPhysician Award from the Ohio State Medical Association and the Ohio High School Athletic Association. When a Greater ClevelandHighSchoolSportsFanhearsthegameisbeingplayedatBlaugrundFieldtheyknowthegameisatGarfieldHeights High School.

Floyd Konet – Teacher/Coach

FloydKonetwasateacher,coachandathleticdirectorforGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolfromthe1950’sthroughthe1980’s.Coach Konet’s success in athletics started in high school in southwestern Pennsylvania where he earned a football scholarship to the University of Florida. After a successful career as a Gator he continued on as a professional football player with the ClevelandRams.AfterthoseexperienceshecametoGarfieldHeightstoteachandcoach.Floyd,CliffFoust,LennyBrickmanandAndyKnazekformedoneofthefinesthighschoolcoachingstaff’sinOhioHighSchoolhistory.Workingwithyouthwasagiftthathehad.Hewasamanofstrongcharacter.Hedisplayedtoughcharacterandaconsistentfirm,fairdisciplinethatearnedtherespectofstudents,athletesandcolleagues.Thosewhorememberhimasacoachandmentorstillquotehisunforgettablesayings.Inthesummerof1987,hewasdiagnosedwithcancer.Hekeptuphiscoachingresponsibilitieswhilereceivingradiationtreatments.Henevermissedapracticeduringthatsummer.Hesetanexampleandalwaysputforth110%.HediedNovember19,1987.Afterhisdeath,thecoachingstaffwantedtoestablishanathleticawardin his honor and memory. The Floyd Konet 110% Award was established to show respect to a man who spent his life showing athletes and students the way to be winners not only in their chosen sport but also in the game of life. The coaches choose the recipients each year from the demanding criteria that was established.

Frank Titus ‘43

FrankTitusplayedoffensivecenteranddefensivelinebackeronthegreatearly1940’steamsofHeadCoachJackWilson.Coach Wilson stated that Frank was one of his elite players from that era. As an all-league center he anchored the offensive linethatscorednumeroustouchdownsinthefallof1942.Defensively,Frankwasaferociousall-leaguelinebackerwhowasoneoftheteamleadersintackles.Eventhoughthegameoffootballhaschangedoverthepast70years,Frank’scoachesandteammatesstillbelievehisskillsandtalentswouldhavemadehimastandoutplayertoday.AftergraduationFrankjoinedtheAirForceandservedinWWII.HeflewoutofEnglandwiththe8thAirborneDivision.TheDistrictUnitflewaheadofthebombers and cleared the airspace. They interrupted German ground units from targeting bombers behind the unit. After the war,FrankworkedforOhioBellasaninstallerandrosetoamanagerialposition.FrankmarriedhishighschoolsweetheartMildred.Theyhaveason,daughterandtengrandchildren.

Frank Fiore ‘55

FrankFiorewasGarfieldHeightsHighSchool’sfirsttwo-timeStateWrestlingChampion.Hewonhisfirsttitlein1954andhissecondin1955,bothatthe165poundweightclass.Itwasn’tuntilthelate1960’sthatRonAngellojoinedhimasGarfield’sonlytwo-timeStateWrestlingChampion.FrankwasalsoinductedintotheOHSAAWrestlingHallofFame.HeisoneofsevenGarfieldHeights’wrestlersandcoacheswhoareinthisprestigiousgroup.Besideshiswrestlinghonors,Frankalsoletteredinfootball,baseballandtrack.InfootballFrankwaschosen1stTeamAll-ConferenceandchosentotheClevelandNewsDreamTeamandClevelandPressStars.Besideshisathleticprowess,FrankwasClassPresidentandHomecoming King. After graduating for GHHS Frank went to Kent State University where he wrestled and coached. Frank also was instrumental in establishing numerous wrestling programs throughout Northeast Ohio.

David Range ‘63

DavidRangewasthe103poundStateWrestlingChampionin1963fromGarfieldHeightsHighSchool.HecontinuedhiswrestlingcareeratMiamiofOhioandwasthe123poundMid-AmericanConferenceChampionin1967.Inbothhighschoolandcollege,DavidwasTeamCaptainandOutstandingWrestler.AftercollegeDavidcontinuedhiswrestlingcareerwiththeAmateurAthleticUnionwherehewasa3-timeNationalChampionat105.5pounds.HewonconsecutiveAAUTitlesin1973,’74and’75.HealsowasnamedtotheWorldCupTeamfrom1973to1975.In1975hewasaSilverMedalistfortheUnitedStatesinthePan-AmericanGames.Besideshiswrestlingcareer,Davidhadacareerasaneducatorfor30years.

HebeganhiscareeratGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolandthenmovedontoWarrensvilleHeightsHighSchoolandShawHighSchool ending his career at Chambers Elementary School as a physical education teacher. David credits his wrestlingsuccessandtenacityonthemattohisFather,DavidRangeSr.,whosaid“Educationstartsathome”;BillMorris,hishighschoolcoachwhoencouragedDave’sdreamofdoingsomethingspecialforthewrestlingcommunity;JoeGalatandJeffLewiswhomentoredDaveonthefundamentalsofbeingagoodcoachandmotivator;and,hischildren,David,Dava,Carol,andCathy,whotaughthimpatienceandhowtolaughoutloud.

Jack Banville ‘64

JackBanvilleplayedoffensiveguardanddefensivetackleforthegreatearly1960’sCliffFoustfootballteamsatGarfieldHeightsHighSchool.Asajuniorhehelpedleadtheteamtothe1962GreaterClevelandConferenceChampionship.Hissenioryear,Jackwastheonlytwo-waystarteronthe1963G.C.C.Championshipfootballteam.Afterthe’63season,Jackwas voted the Most Valuable Lineman in the G.C.C. He also earned All-Scholastic honors from the Cleveland Plain Dealer andClevelandPress.Atthestatelevel,Jackwaschosen3rdTeamAllStateforthe1963season.JackalsowasatwoyearlettermanfortheBulldogsinbaseballin1963and1964.JackwasawardedafullathleticscholarshipforfootballtoArizonaStateUniversity,HomeoftheSunDevils.Aftercollegeheworkedfor20yearsattheNFLExperienceasanAssistantGamesManager.HehasbeenmarriedtoSusannefor41years.TheirsonBrianandhiswifeLindahavethreebeautifulchildren,Shane,BradyandMcKenna.TheyrefertoGrandpaas“Bubba”.Jackisnowretiredandenjoyshisfreetimewithhiswife,son,daughter-in-lawandgrandchildren.

Emanuel “Cappy” Capadona – Booster Club President

EmanuelCapadonawasPresidentoftheGarfieldHeightsAthleticBoosterClub(originallytheDad’sBoosterClub)formanytermsofoffice.Mostreferredtohimas“Cappy”.HeworkedcountlessvolunteerhoursoveraspanofthirtyyearsandhelpedraisehundredsofthousandsofdollarsfortheathletesandcoachesofGarfieldHeightsCitySchools.HehelpedorganizemanyfundraiserslikeNightattheRaces,theFootballGameProgramsandthe300Clubjusttonameafew.HeinitiatedandmanagedtheGarfieldBoosterBingowhichgeneratedoveramilliondollars.AtBingohewasthehardestworkerbutnotthebest bingo number caller. He was solely responsible for the Capadona Room at the Middle School where he not only provided thefunds,butdesignedandactuallytransformedtheoldwrestlingroomintoameetingroomforthecoachesandcommunitygroups. He was also named Booster of the Year and Athletic Volunteer of the Year. Cappy had a deep commitment andunselfishdedicationtohisfamily,thecommunityandtheschool.HewasamemberofCityCouncil,theRecreationBoard,thePlanningCommission,theCharterReviewCommission,theZoningBoardChairman,HomeDaysChairmanandaManagerandBoardMemberoftheGarfieldHeightsLittleBoys’League.AftergraduatingfromJohnAdamsHighSchoolheservedasaMarineinWWIIintheSouthPacific.HewentontoFennCollegeandwashonoredastheOutstandingEngineerand was editor of the college newspaper. He then became a professional mechanical engineer. Cappy was married to his high schoolsweetheartAnnfor51yearsandtheyhadfourchildren–Clare,Jim,AnitaandJonalongwith12grandchildren,11great grandchildren and three more on the way.

Rory Borgio – Teacher/Coach

RoryBorgiowasanEnglishteacher,seniorclassadvisor,volleyballandbasketballcoachatGarfieldHeightsHighSchoolfrom1975untilsheunexpectedlypassedawayin1999.Shewasatrue“RenaissanceWoman”.Whenitcametoworkingwith kids in the classroom or on the court she was a master motivator and innovator. She was able to bring out the best in all thekidsshetaughtandcoached.Atruerolemodel!Asoneofherformerstudentwroteshortlyaftershepassed,“Allofuslookeduptoyouasarolemodel,foryoutaughtuseverythingweneededtoknow.FromEnglishLittoshowingushowtobea better person you were always there for us. We are completely grateful to you and all you’ve done”. When working with colleagues,parentsandcommunitymembersshehadtheuncannyabilitytobringoutthebestinthemandmotivatethemtobecomeinvolvedintheeducationalprocess,beitacademics,athletics,studentactivitiesandcommunityinvolvement.IfyouworkedwithRoryyoudidn’twork.Shemadework,beitteachingorcoachingorworkingonalevycampaignhaveapurposeandmostimportantlyfun.AfterherdeaththeAthleticDepartmentinconjunctionwithaprivatedonorsetuptheRoryBorgioHumanitarianScholarship.The$1,000scholarshipisawardedeachyeartoanathleteorgroupofathlete’swhodisplay humanitarianism in their daily lives.
