Fraunhofer Institute for Open
Communication Systems FOKUS
Quality Assurance of Railway Systems
Fraunhofer FOKUS provides engineering
and consulting for the development, quality
assurance and certification of software-
intensive railway systems. In order to assure
the safety and security of railway systems,
the system quality must meet the highest
standards–from analysing requirement and
certification to operation.
To reach these objectives, Fraunhofer
FOKUS advises its customers on the
selection and introduction of modern
technologies, such as,
• Model-based development
• Test automation
• Formal methods
• Domain specific languages

CIS: One Contact Wire Inspection
System for everything
The Contact Wire Inspection System CIS
records both, the vertical and horizontal
position of up to ten contact wires
simultaneously and their degree of wear.
The system works contactless at a speed of
up to 350 km/h. The system is mounted on
the roof of an inspection car. The position
recording is based on the laser scanning
principle and the residual thickness
recording is camera-based. Thanks to an
independent lighting unit, the Contact
Wire Inspection System CIS operates
reliably – without influences of daylight or
weather conditions.

Efficient railcar body layout and
production
Material savings, flexible production and
user comfort are becoming more important
on light rail body segments. Optimization
can be achieved on the basis of passenger
flow analysis and simulation for interior
design. Light weight production of side wall
segments with individual door cuttings can
be carried out through low-distortion laser-
welded and fully joined integral structures.

Automated thermographic inspection
system for railway wheels
Many industrial branches, such as railway
engineering and automotive industry,
require safety-related components – e.g.
components of brakes and steering,
or entire railway wheels – to undergo
a hundred percent inspection during
the manufacturing process to exclude
surface cracks. Engineers and scientists
of Fraunhofer IZFP have developed an
automated thermographic inspection
system for railway wheels which enables
the detection of surface cracks without
surface treatment.

Wheelset monitoring with Energy-
Harvesting-Sensors
Energy-autonomous sensor systems for
monitoring of freight cars are a technical
novelty. Such systems make use of
mechanical vibrations occurring on a freight
car in service in order to generate electrical
energy. The development of a low-power
and particularly robust system presents a
special challenge. Scientists at Fraunhofer
LBF are developing a methodical approach
to the design of such energy-autonomous
monitoring systems. The researchers
determine operating conditions in transit,
characterize energy sources and develop
specific algorithms for the different loading
conditions during goods transport. The
new energy-autonomous systems support
eco-friendly and safe rail transport.
