Lid until the in-situ concrete is strong enough to withstand construction loads. The in-situ
concrete must support the full width of the frame.
Halgan covers are individually fitted to ensure a gas-tight fit. Covers and frames are not
intendedtoberatedatnotlessthan28Mpaforthesupportingwallsandforcoverinfilling.
Preparation
Ensure that the usage class is suitable for the traffic application – refer to AS3996.
Before fixing the cover into position on the formwork, clean and grease all mating surfaces
of the cover set and check that the product is correctly assembled. If the cover is bolted or
riveted to the frame, the cover may be supported directly by the formwork, otherwise, nails
can be driven into the formwork so that the frame is supported at the correct level.
Before concreting commences, check that the cover is fully seated in the frames. If the cover
was fitted by installation bolts, these will have to be removed prior to the infilling covers. This
means that infilling will have to be delayed until the concrete supporting the frame has cured.
Concreting
Place the concrete in-situ and vibrate well so that the concrete which supports the full width
of the frame and fills the frame cells is well compacted and will reach the specified Mpa.
Honeycombed or bony concrete under the frame will reduce the capacity of the cover and
may cause it to fail at relatively low loads. If infill covers are supplied the concrete infilling is
at the same time
Screedofftheexcessconcreteandfinishthesurfaceasrequired.Theribsandedgesofthe
cover and frame should be visible. Allow the concrete to cure before removing the cover
and the formwork – premature stripping may damage the supporting concrete and distort
the frame.
After the concrete has cured, remove the cover, mark the pit number on the underside
ofthecover(donotmixthecovers)andstriptheformwork.Cleanandgreaseallmating
surfaces of the cover and frame before replacing the cover.

Surge Control DeviceBoth the Modular Grease Trap and the S100 Ecotec Grease Extractor are fitted with the
patentedSurgeControlDevice(SCD).TheSCDunitislocatedinternallyconnectedtothe
outlet pipe. The SCD unit is submerged in the pre-treatment vessel chamber, usually half
way from the bottom of the vessel to the natural water level. The SCD is fixed and cannot
be removed.
The SCD by virtue of its hydraulic back pressure design principle addresses the fundamental
engineering basic of a batch process. Typically the design on available wastewater
treatment devices assumes a continuous process principle. It is therefore a device whereby
the treatment process accommodates the typical surge nature of the influent flow that
characterise most modern wastewater flows. Surges are smoothed out in the chamber
and pollutant concentrates partially balanced. Surges of flow rates and variable pollutant
concentrationarethemajorcausesofwastewatertreatmentsystemsinefficiency–theSCD
combats this.
The SCD unit is designed to be continually self-cleaning. The SCD unit is not a filter so particles
do not bond to the plates causing blockages. As the SCD unit is fixed below the water level,
the unit cannot be tampered with. The SCD unit comprises of 18 packed plates. The number
of plates can be increased to accommodate higher flow rates. There is a 3.5 mm in built spacer
between the plates. The SCD unit will also cause a slight back pressure within the chamber.
This back pressure will help the heavy particles to settle and the lighter particles to rise to the
surface.Thebackpressurewillalsostabilizesurgeswithinthechamber.Theparticleplateswill
trap and deflect the suspended particles, which will escape through the 3.5 mm gap back
intothepretreatmentvesselchamber.Whenthehydraulicsurgehasstopped,thebuoyant
particles float to the surface and heavy particles drop to the bottom of the vessel, this is due
to the SCD unit being submerged in the pre-treatment vessel.
