Halfen Limited is a leading supplierof building fixings andcomponents, with manufacturingand marketing centres worldwide.

For over 75 years Halfen hasmaintained a position at theforefront of the construction fixingsmarket, establishing a reputationfor technological innovation, product reliability and customerservice.

Introduction

The concept of reinforcementcontinuity strip has been inwidespread use throughout Europefor over 20 years and repeatedlydemonstrates itself to be a simple, time saving and cost effectivemethod of maintaining reinforcementcontinuity across construction jointsin concrete.

The system comprises specialpre-bent reinforcement housed ina purpose designed carrier casing –all of which is fabricated off site ina factory controlled environment.

On site, the entire unit is cast intothe face of the wall. Afterthe formwork is struck, the lid isremoved to reveal the connectionlegs (or starter bars) laying insidethe casing. These legs are bent outby the contractor, ready for lappingthe main reinforcement of thesubsequent pour.

The casing remains embedded inthe wall, providing a rebate intowhich the concrete of the adjoiningmember is poured and eliminatesthe need for traditional preparation(i.e. scabbling) at the joint.

The Kwikastrip unit is either nailed(through casing) to the shutter face,or the projecting anchoragereinforcement is securely wired backto the main reinforcement cage andthe shutter offered up to it.

The Kwikastrip unit is thereforesandwiched in position between theshutter and the main reinforcementcage. The concrete is then pouredand the entire unit is cast into theface of the concrete element/wall(see figure 1).

Stripping the shutter reveals the lidon the wall face. The lid is removedto reveal the connection legs (seefigure 2), which should be bent outusing the available straightening tool(see figure 3).

Installation of Kwikastrip

Anchorage is achieved via thereinforcement delivered projectingout of the casing. Lap is achieved viathe bent out connection legs, whichare spliced to the main reinforcementof the subsequent concrete pour(see figure 4).

Straightening of bars

Reinforcement should only bestraightened when the temperatureof the steel is 5ºC or above. Wherethe temperature of the reinforcementis below 5ºC, reinforcement may beindirectly warmed to a temperaturenot exceeding 100ºC but no form ofdirect heat treatment shall be appliedto the reinforcement.

The available straightening tool (seeopposite) enables the connection legto be straightened correctly andefficiently.

The use of other implements (e.g.hammers, scaffold tubes) will result inadversely kinked starter bars andunacceptable work hardening of thereinforcement that may adverselyaffect performance of the system.

The straightening tool is a steel tubewith a specially shaped end and aninternal diameter only slightly greaterthan the diameter of the bar to bestraightened. The tube wall thicknessadequately ensures that the tube willnot flex under load.

SideEnd

The length of the tube provides thenecessary leverage to eliminateundesirable ‘jerky’ movements, otherwise caused as a result of toogreat a physical effort required by theoperative.

The tube should be placed over thebar and located at the start of thebend. The end of the tube is speciallyshaped (see right) in order tominimise undesirable point contact ofthe tube on the bar and, moreimportantly, to provide continuoussupport to the outside of the bendduring straightening.

Figure 3 Figure 4

Typical counter-bending toolThe straightening operation shouldbe smooth and progressive and thetube must be allowed to continuously‘slip’ around the bend as it becomesstraightened, so in its final ‘rest’position, the tube should be incontact with the interface of theembedded case and the bar nowprojecting from it.

The tube should then be withdrawnand the bar checked for suitablealignment through the joint with dueconsideration to the intendedconcrete cover.

Kwikastrip is available off the shelf incasing lengths of 1200mm. Thiscasing length is significant becausethe end distances to the first and lastbars (75mm for 150mm centres and100mm for 200mm bar centres)ensures that where the cases arebutted to one another, the correctbar centres are accuratelymaintained, as is the cross sectionalarea of reinforcement throughthe construction joint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Kwikastrip be cut on site?Where Kwikastrip needs to be cut tolength, the case material can be cutwith a hand-held cut-off saw. However, extreme care must betaken not to damage the pullout barsinside the case.

What are the loading differencesbetween Kwikastrip and traditionalloose/unbent rebar?Structural tests (by UK CARES)showed that the flexural and shearstrength of construction joints formedwith Kwikastrip are no less thanthose of traditionally formedconstruction joints.

If Kwikastrip isn’t feasible for myapplication, what can I use instead? In these situations, the Halfen HBMthreaded coupler system forms anideal complement to Kwikastrip. Please ask for details.

N.B SafetyAll safety regulations and toolmanufacturer’s instructionsmust be observed whencutting Kwikastrip. Cuttingmay leave sharp edges sosuitable personal protectionequipment must be used.

We recommend removing one-barsections from one or both ends of aKwikastrip case to reduce the lengthof a unit. If more than one unitoccurs in a run we suggest one-barsections are removed from a numberof units to achieve the requiredreduction in length.

When a case is shortened theremaining pullout bars will projectfrom the cut ends. These can beoverlapped into an adjacent unit byremoving the polystyrene end seal. Please be sure to reseal the cut endswith polystyrene or a strongformwork tape to prevent the ingressof cement grout.

Technical approval

Kwikastrip was the first-ever productto attain Technical Product Approvalby the UK CARES CertificationAuthority for Reinforcing Steels.

In the UK, due to the absence of anydefinitive British Standard coveringthe subject, it has historically been amatter of individual engineer opinionas to product application suitability.Such opinion had been reliant uponfew factors; the manufacturer’s data, elements of relevant British Standards4449, 8666, and 8110, together withindividually gained experience.

The most fundamental considerationhad been the aspect of rebendinghigh yield reinforcement, which is aprerequisite of the system.

Some concern is understandable, asBS8110 states that high yieldreinforcement should not be re-bentor straightened without theengineer’s approval.

As specialists, Halfen has been activefor many years in regularly testingcarefully selected reinforcement forits suitability to be rebent, anddefining its subsequent performanceonce rebent. Whilst this informationhad served engineers well, there hadnever before been any full-scale UKtests for a reinforcement continuity

Product testing

A copy of theTechnical ApprovalReport can bedownloaded fromwww.halfen.co.ukor fromwww.ukcares.co.uk

Several wall/slab joints and column/nibconstructions were formed in reinforcedconcrete, incorporating construction jointsformed with Kwikastrip. These tests werefull-scale in terms of bar sizes and memberdepths.

In all wall/slab specimens the continuityreinforcement was 16mm diameterdeformed bar, chosen as being the largestbar size normally used in the Kwikastripsystem and which imposes the greateststresses on the surrounding concrete andthe most severe demands on thereinforcement in relation to bending andstraightening.

The series of reinforced concrete samples(some of which were cast in a mannersimulating poor compaction) weresubjected to various loading conditionsrepresenting high shear or high bending

moment. In all cases the samples exceededthe ultimate loads calculated from BS8110.

The structural tests showed that flexuralstrength and shear strength of constructionjoints formed with the Kwikastrip systemare no less than those of equivalenttraditionally formed construction joints.

The results of the comprehensive testprogramme, together with the quality ofexpert opinion within UK CARES, meanthe approval is virtually equivalent to aBritish Standard.

CARESTechnical Approval Report TA2-5001Assessment of the KwikastripProduct and the Quality Systemfor Production

system in its application entirety(i.e. casing and reinforcement castinto concrete construction joints andthose joints then subjected to load).

The UK CARES Technical Approvalfills this void, and offersreinforcement engineers sound databy which they can design withincreased confidence.
