Haiti 2010-2011 Election Round II (1 Feb 7)Michel Martelly and Mirlande Manigat are going to round two of the Haiti presidential

elections, according to an “official” CEP announcement.1

(OAS analysis suggested.) Lemonde published the results roughly 8 hours before they became official.

refresher on what we knew about those two candidates qualifications to become

President, from research earlier in the race. However, half of CEP officials have cast

doubt on the “officialness” of the recent CEP announcement.3

Article 8 of the CEP’s bylaws requires that the Council’s decisions be made by an “absolute majority of its

members.” Therefore, a valid decision regarding the run-off would require five votes.4

Mirlande Hyppolite Manigat (1 Feb-6)

Secretary General of BDR, Party "Rally of Progressive National Democrats (BDR) is a

former Senator, former first lady and university administrator. She is also a longtime

opposition leader and a professor. Included in 19 approved Aug-20. Her political

January 1988 her husband Leslie Francois Manigat was elected President with 50.29%of the vote. Here is Leslie F. Manigat on Linked In. Voter turnout was below 10%. In

June 1988 Manigat was ousted by a military coup d’etat. In the 2006 election, a

Presidential run-off was avoided, by counting the blank “none of above” ballotsdifferently. Mirlande was elected a Senator in that same 2006 election, but she resigned

as part of the protest how the Presidential run-off was handled. Her husband was in the

2006 presidential competition, losing to Rene Preval.The Haitian people, said Mirlande Manigat, a university scholar who spent years in

political exile, “are looking for jobs, life, schooling for their children. Not ideologies.''5

Michel Martelly ``Sweet Micky' Joseph (1 Feb 17) (singer) Party "Repon Peyizan" (Farmers' response) is a compas musician and

entertainer whose lyrics have poked fun at the concept of the Haitian presidency.

Included in 19 approved Aug-20. Micky is a Haitian performing and recording

artist, composer, and musical sociopolitical activist. He also has a background in

construction and philanthropy.Michel Martelly is focusing on creating jobs and has made it one of his top priorities in

speeches and in meetings. In September 2010, he endorsed and began working with

ECCO2, a company which has developed job opportunities and creates a cleaner-greener

environment.8

Sept 16th-18th, Martelly was in Washington D.C. meeting with the Congressional Black

Caucus's Annual Legislative Conference.9

Friday Sep 18 he was at the Walter E.Washington Convention Center, where United States First Lady Michelle Obama spokeon US domestic issues.

Haiti Libre is doing portraits or biographies on each participant in the presidential race so

that the voters can better know those which aspire to the presidency of Haiti.10

He was born in Port-au-Prince on February 12, 1961 to Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Martelly. His mother, a de Pradines had music in her blood, but she may not have known her son

would follow the family tradition and become very successful.

He attended Collège Roger Anglade, Saint Louis de Gonzague and Centre d’EtudesSecondaires, where he completed his studies and passed his Baccalaureate State exams.

He traveled to the USA where he studied and worked in construction.

Sweet Micky character became a celebrity way beyond our borders, at times sounding

fresh at other times courageous, and always counting on the effect of surprise; this

entertainer sought to amuse and captivate the public while he preached Love, Peace and Progress.

1987 he rediscovers a longtime friend, Sophia Saint Rémy, from Gonaives. Today,twenty-three years later, they still share a profound bond. From their marriage were

born four children: Michel-Olivier, Michel-Alexandre, Michel-Yani, and Malaika-Michel, to whom, despite his hectic schedules, Michel has been a wonderful father.

They worked as a team, she was the agent and Michel the act; they trekked the whole

country, every state, every town and village. From this professional experience, he has gained a profound knowledge of the country. The Martelly’s did not remain insensitive

when surrounded by poverty and misery. Their feeling of civic duty and a sense of social

responsibility were channeled into different charitable activities which became the Pink

and White Foundation, FREB.

Using discretion as their ally, they made a difference in the lives of people who no longer

counted in this society. A tremendous amount of work was accomplished, tons of food staples were distributed and thousands of cooked meals were handed out; however, little

publicity was allowed, a rather quiet dignity and timid generosity shrouded these

activities, “Haitian suffering is not for sale” Michel has been known to say; “Haiti is toorich to be poor!” another famous phrase. We believe that to change will require being

painfully unpopular, but change is inevitable.

The Sweet Micky entertainment group collected successes and was popular everywhereregardless of social economic belonging. The man who captured our hearts in rhythm

and made us sing the same tune and dance together now leads a movement of social

harmony around one flag, one vision, one slogan: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

Open to consensus, Michel Martelly is convinced that the time for change has come. The

Haitian socio-political scene suffered cracks beyond repair. We must rebuild and thistime with better standards and with more ambitious performance criteria. We must

rebuild, of course, but not only physical reconstruction efforts, we will also restructure

the systems of governance, of ethics and the principles governing living together as a people. We will activate a revival of Haitian mentality for productivity in Agriculture, as

well as in Culture and Tourism. Most importantly, we will begin by making true the




dream of an Educational system that provides high quality training for all ages and all

social economic groups. Because Haiti’s true treasures remain in the potential for development of human resources and the diversity of investment possibilities that can

create rapid economic growth.

The vision of a Martelly presidency is one of a leader who knows how to take to bull byits horns and win the battles he undertakes. President Michel Martelly will bring us into

a new era of pride, success and progress.

Not found via Linked In search, but many other people there share parts of his name.

Audio Interview on YouTube in parts 1 2 3 4 5. He is in possession of a U.S. green card

which raised legal doubts whether this candidate met the requirement of consecutive fiveyears of residency in Haiti.

As reported in prior research notes on Haiti politics and election, there has beenenormous international interference in the conduct of Haitian affairs, and now there is the

question of whether the USA can block Aristide return to Haiti.15

After lots of wrangling, Aristide does now have a passport to permit his return to Haiti.16

Bill Clinton meets Martelly and Manigat (1 Feb 17 )Former US president Bill Clinton was in Haiti and he met separately with presidential

candidates Michel Martelly and Mirlande Manigat behind closed doors to discuss the

future of Haiti.17

Aristide Controversy (1 Feb 17)

The various sides are locked into their positions.

Here’s Aristide’s lawyer addressing various allegations.18

The Haitian government has issued a diplomatic passport to former president Jean-

Bertrand Aristide. This is long overdue; Aristide has wanted to return ever since he was

forced into exile in 2004. There is no justification for him not to; he is a Haitian

citizen, charged with no crime; and the Haitian constitution explicitly prohibits

compulsory political exile.

Aristide, The New York Times noted during his first exile (1991-1994),first and only democratic election overwhelmingly, -month tenure

[that] was marked by fewer human-rights violations and fewer boat people than anycomparable period in modern Haitian history. He wants to return home, as a privatecitizen, and assist in Haiti

He has repeatedly said since 2004 that he wishes to return home to work in the field of education. His two Ph.D.s African languages

his history, including seven years teaching in South Africa and the establishment of a

medical school and university at the Aristide Foundation are testament to his longinvolvement in education.

The ball is now in South Africa court.

Even though Aristide has every right to return under Haitian and international law,

documents recently revealed by Wikileaks show that the U.S. and the Brazilian

governments have pressured the South African government to keep Aristide there.

The United States imposes its will, as the most powerful nation on Earth, to keep in

distant exile the deposed president of one of the weakest. Former dictator Jean-ClaudeDuvalier, meanwhile, walks free, gives press conferences and makes ceremonial visits

around Haiti.

The return of Duvalier

in U.S.-Haitian relations, one that harkens back to a shameful era, when the U.S.government propped up the brutal Duvalier regimes for decades.

The danger is not only from his impunity, but from the threat of a re-legitimization of

Duvalierism.

Haiti now stands on the verge of a precipice; an extreme right-wing political turn

that openly favors the rich and despises the poor

not a neutral spectator to this situation -administrationstatements more opposed to the idea of Aristide

presence.

Even worse, the United States has been pressuring the Haitian authorities into arbitrarily

allowing kompa singer Michel Martelly (who is known to have supported Duvalier in the

past, and who got the support of just 4.5 percent of registered voters) to proceed to anelections run-off against former first lady Mirlande Manigat (who received 6.4 percent

support from registered voters).

Considering what is known of the right-wing proclivities of each, this could be akin to

Haiti

unpopular tea party candidate, with no Democrat allowed to compete.

Contrary to last week

made a final decision on the elections runoff. It has now emerged that only half of theElectoral Council members actually signed onto the statement announcing Martelly

advancement; a majority is required.

Ultimately, it is the right of the Haitian people n Haitiand the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

New first-round elections, including Fanmi Lavalas and all eligible parties this time, arethe only democratic way forward.

Aristide should also be allowed to return to Haiti.




No foreign power
