4 HairTies April 2014

1. The braid out. We love this style! This style is not a stranger to natu-ralistas all across the globe. To give the traditional braid out a little edge, take one whole side of your hair and pin it over to the other. For a little extra volume, sepa-rate the braid chunks a bit more than usual and you’re set!

2. Flexi-rods! The best way to get extra bouncy, extra tight curls is with flexi-rods. Although one of the more time consuming hair styles, this one tends to keep its shape and will hold the curls for about 2 weeks, or longer if you can make them stretch that long.

3. The quick weave. Prepare your hair for the weave by braiding your natural hair into small cornrows, either in a circle or straight back. When your braids are complete, take your first track and cut it to your desired length. Once you have the track cut and ready, using a special needle and thread sew the track into the braids. Continue this process throughout your en-tire head. For a layered look, cut the tracks into different lenghts. To give it a natural look, arrange your hair in the part line area to camouflage with the tracks.

4. Who doesn’t love a good side braid? Elegant and simple is always a yes. Part your hair to the side, braid across the side with more hair, and secure with a hair tie in the back. The best way to secure the braid would be with a few bobby pins or by tying a small rubberband at the end of the finshed braid. To be a little more creative connect the braid to a sidy ponytail with a larger hair tie. Tuck the hair ubnder to create a bun for extra elegance!

8.If you’re thinking going short and sassy, think Meagan Good. What we love the most about her cut is the sophisticated and sleek feel that it has. The best product to use for the short side is Cream of Nature Perfect Edges hair gel. This will lay even the shortest pieces of hair down and keep them neat and tucked.

7. Janet Jackson gives hope to natu-ralistas with this style. To achieve this gor-geous updo, wet your hair and immediatley apply Cantu curling cream. This will give your curls definition and hold. Next take your hair and twist it upward, and secure it with a large, wide clip.

6. Gabrielle Union is the epitome of vin-tage chic in this Gatsby inspired ‘do. This style is very glamorous but defintely achiev-able. Her soft curls, created by a 1” barrel curling iron, are loosely pinned up into a loose side bun using bobby pins and a few miniature clips. The bun is paired with her gentle side swept bangs to give it a softer look. To ensure that the style holds, apply a few light spritzes of briliant holding spray by AVEDA. It will keep the curls in tact without any flaking, allowing you to look fabulous all day long!

5. If there was anyone to have a hair crush on, the answer would most likely be Taraji P. Henson. Her hair always radiates health and luster. She has mentioned in the past that she wraps her hair at night to prevent any extra heat damage to her hair. Pictured here, she rocks a short angled bob with a bangin’ side bang. To create this look, simply wash and dry your hair normally and straighten it with a slight bump to create the volume desired.

Curly Hair

CAREWith

In a world of straight hair being more profes-sional, tamer, more “acceptable”, it can be hard to em-brace your naturally curly hair. You grow up wishing for your hair to be easier to tame. That you could just walk outside and have it blow in the wind like the girls on TV. Disney princesses certainly didn’t help, giving you unrealistic expectations for hair. Now, at 2 am when you’re still up trying to make sense of your wonderful-ly twisted locks, you can’t help but curse them out. At least, I know I do. But what I’ve found is that instead of seeing my hair as a problem, embracing it was the best solution I’ve ever found. Versatility is definitely the best perk of having curly hair. I’ve found that a quick, cute, and easy way to style my hair on a daily basis is to just twist the sides back, and secure with bobby pins. It keeps the hair out of your face while still being a cute hairstyle.A good protective style is a braid updo that has become a favorite of mine. To achieve this style, I simply braid my hair across the front and around my whole head to the other side. This one is good for rainy days. Another style that lasts for while is of course when I flat iron my hair. Once my hair is straightened, I generally keep that style for about 2-3 weeks, preserving it by covering it with a silk bonnet at night. Once your hair is straight, it doesn’t require as much moisturizing. At least, that is what I’ve found for my hair. Running some of Miss Julie’s Baby Buttercreme ($34.92 at ama-zon) through it just once before I go to sleep every other night tends to keep the dryness to a minimum. You don’t want to over moisturize, as it will make your hair stringy and too oily. But the most important hair tips begin with you. The first step to healthy curls always begins with you em-bracing the gorgeous hair you already have. Figure out what works for you, and the rest is history.

Today I want to talk to you a little bit about achieving your hair goals. So, what is the first step to achieving your hair length and health goals? Well, you have to set a concrete, measurable goal with a clearly defined timeframe.

I know when some women look at my hair journey they think “wow, all those years to achieve waist length hair? that’s a long time.”

True, my journey to full waist length took me almost 7 years. I started with chin length hair, suffered several set-backs, cut numerous inches to remove the “v” shape and ultimately achieve full waist length. But guess what? Those 7 years would have passed re-gardless.

Granted, a 7 year goal is overwhelming so I suggest that you start with a short-er timeframe. In my book, The 5 Hair Archetypes, I talk about setting both short term and long term goals. The short term goal should have a 21 days deadline.

Why 21 days? Because research has shown that new habits will “stick” if you consistently follow the routine for 21 consecutive days. As it relates to hair care, you can set a short term goal of moisturizing daily and after 21 days of consistent practice, you will have a new healthy hair habit (and less breakage to boot!). Instead of viewing goals in terms of years, take it 21 days at a time. This manage-able time frame will help to keep you motivated and on track for your long term goals (ex. Waist length).

Examples of other short term goals include: deep conditioning weekly, protecting hair at night, and reducing direct heat usage.

What are your short terms goals?

Ever since I was thirteen-years-old, my hair became the way I expressed myself. As a young girl my mom would always do my hair but I wouldn’t always like the way it turned out. She tolerated my complaints for a while until finally, when I was in seventh grade, she turned the responsibility of my hair over to me. At this time my hair was natural, never having been touched by any chemicals. It was extremely thick, curly, long. In one word it was unman-ageable. Everyone loved my hair in its natural state but from the standpoint of me trying to maintain it and create different styles on a daily basis proved too difficult. Having had enough, I made the decision to relax my hair. It is now ten years later and I have never regretted my decision. Relaxing my hair saves time and gives me opportunities to do so many other styles that may not been as achievable with my natural hair. I now have a passion for doing hair and enjoy trying new things. Even though my hair is now straight I still have a variety of hairstyles that can make my hair curly, long, way or anything else I desire. If your hair is relaxed or you are thinking of making that change, just remember that it does come with a greater responsibility. Having chemicals in your hair means it needs to be treated with the proper hair products in order to keep it healthy. Personally, I like to use products that contain a lot of natural ingedients such as olive oil, cocunut oil, avocado. These ingredients can be found in African Pride products, which is one of my favorite brands. If that does not work for you, don’t be discouraged. Everyone is different, so it may take you awhile to find your product niche. When you do, be ready to embark on the continuing adventure of hair care that could lead you to some exciting places!

Q I am a white mother and have recently adopted an African American ddaugh-ter. She is five-years-old and I am still not used to doing her texture of hair. I have been washing it daily but it is becoming so dry and brittle. What am I doing wrong?

A The reason for the brittleness of your daughter’s hair can be a reult of two things. Too frequent washings and improper or inadequate moisturizing. African American hair thrives on oils so while you may think that washing it frequently to remove the oil is helpful, it is actually damaging. Unless it is neceessary, her hair should not be washed more than once per week. After each washing be sure to apply the proper type of moisturizing lotion to keep her hair healthy and soft.

Q I have followed all advice about taking the time to use the proper products after I wash my daughters hair and through the week to keep it from drying out but some-thing still seems to be going wrong. Each morning when she wakes up and I go to do her hair it feels extremely dry, almost like no products were ever used. Why is that and how can I prevent it?

A One reason her hair might seem extremely dry in the morning is because it is not holding moisture. A great way to help hold moisture in her hair is to massage her scalp with any kind of moisturizing lotion every night, and then apply tea tree oil throughout her whole head. You may apply the tea tree oil every night, or depending on how dry it feels in the morning. Tea tree oil is a very good oil that is used to lock in the moisture that will keep your daughter’s hair hydrated. Also, some kids don’t like sleeping with a silk bonnet or scarf on their heads while sleeping, but that also may help keep the moisture in her hair.
