In Beech Hill Avenue, at the bottom of ourgarden, is a leaking nuclear reactor, orthat’s what our neighbours must think asI don the white beekeeping suit andsmoker, and make my way slowlytowards the hives. We’ve all read much about the demise

of the honeybee over the last few years. Itis believed that there are no wild bees leftin the UK and any wild colony hasescaped from a beekeeper. That meansno beekeepers, no bees! As Einsteinsaid, when the last bee has gone we onlyhave four years left. So no excuses aboutnot having enough space or stroppyneighbours, bee hives can now be foundon top of Harrods and The Berkeley, onbalconies in high rise blocks and, just incase you thought this was the hobby ofsuicidal, pipesmoking fools who can’t getinto the golf club, they even comedelivered to your door made from funkycoloured plastic from Omlet(www.omlet.co.uk/shop/beekeeping).Bee-keeping is almost cool!A few bee facts. Typically a hive will

contain about 20-50,000 females who, ofcourse, do all the work and about 200males or drones that do nothing but put itabout (sounds familiar?), but female beesare not as soft hearted as their humanequivalent and boot the drones out to diewhen the mating season is over. They likethe hive to be a steady 32C and only goout when the temperature reaches 13C.What is so wonderful is the illusion that I,a mere man, am in control of thousandsof women - for illusion it certainly is. If theyaren’t happy they will be off and it’s my

job to keep them sweet. The best time to check out the progress

of your hive is around mid-day when themajority of the girls are out shopping fornectar and pollen. The rest of them aredancing. Sounds like a normal weekendin Hadley Wood! There’s the adrenaline high of opening

the hives, which, no matter how often I doit, deep inside something screams ‘getthe hell out of here!’. Once you haveprized the lid off no amount of smoke cansmother the primal sound of thousandsof pissed off bees, they are under attackand words of assurance will not calmthem, until you put the lid back on andleave them alone. Finally your reward. Taking over the

kitchen in late August, turning everythingsticky, pursued by bees who really don’tfeel being pickpocketed is fair.

Like a single malt to a blend, or aBudvar to a Budweiser, your own honeyhas a taste like nothing you ever boughtfrom Waitrose. Your stolen harvest is 30-40 pots of honey per hive per year, andyou even feel it’s okay to claim all thecredit (as if you personally had flown the

Some Rowan trees (including ours) in theHadley Wood area are looking veryunhealthy at the moment turning yellowearly and shedding their leaves. Also known as Mountain Ash these

trees are usually robust and long lived.Their berries are a valuable source offood for songbirds. However they aresusceptible to several tree diseasesnotably, ahem, Powdery Mildew, CrownGall and Fire Blight. (I know this as I justread it on Wikipedia). Looking at locallyaffected trees I wonder if Powdery Mildewis the most likely problem and wouldwelcome an expert opinion. Apparentlythe leaves become invaded by whitefungal Powdery Mildew (PM) sporescausing black necrotic spots to develop, the leaves to distort and then fall off.

Apparently there arefungicides available totreat PM but otherwiseit is recommendedthat the fallen leavesare picked up anddisposed of. Thisreduces the load ofspores lying dormantaround the treewaiting for a furtherattack next Spring. Onthe debit side thisleaves you with a badback and a feeling thatyou must constantlywash your hands. Hopefully the trees willbe OK next year and your hands recoverwithout developing black necrotic spotsand falling off.Rod Armstrong

Cycling for Charity. As 1 in 175 babies are stillborn, I wasgalvanised into signing up to cycle fromPanama, through Costa Rica and on intoNicaragua in 6 days, to raise money forProfessor Robert Winston’s GenesisResearch Trust. I met some of thescientists involved, on a cycle ride fromLondon to Paris, last year and was sosaddened to hear how hard it is for somemothers to get their babies safely to full-term. The route will be just under 500kmsbut it’s the day we only do 49kmsthat worries me most – it’s obviouslygoing to involve what they call ‘hills’ – but, judging from my experience in China, areactually mountain passes! Letter from AustraliaTo the Editor ‘Hadley Wood News’Perhaps at times you wonder what the results are for yourhard work in compiling and presenting ‘The Hadley WoodNews’ online, and whether archiving past issues is useful. Let mereassure you that your efforts do indeed affect lives in the most unexpectedmanner.I am emailing this from Canberra, the capital city of Australia where my

husband, Robin, and I read the ‘Hadley Wood News’ online occasionally.Robin was born in Barnet in 1941, was adopted at seven and brought to

Australia by his adopted mother in 1949. It was forty years ago, when our sonwas born, that we obtained Robin’s birth and adoption certificates. The birthcertificate listed ‘Covenden’, Beech Hill’ as his birth mother’s address inMarch/April 1941.Ten years ago, intending to compile a family history for our three

grandchildren, I began seriously searching online for ‘Covenden’. A decade ofsearching brought up nothing. This year, during a final trip to London, Robinand I travelled one hot, sunny Sunday in May to Hadley Wood and Beech Hill.We asked shopkeepers and the occasional local we met for any clues to wheresuch a house named ‘Covenden’ might be to no avail, so we concluded that itmust have been demolished. Our walks took us along Beech Hill, just past theGolf Club entrance. We photographed the beautiful surroundings along the wayand Robin felt satisfied he had returned to the area.Checking information to label some of these photos on our return to Australia,

I again, as a last effort, entered the name into search engines. Imagine (afterseven decades of Robin wondering, my decade of solid searching) ourastonishment when ‘The Hadley Wood News’ of June 2009 came up as areference! The letter from Dr Carol Norris, asking for information about‘Covenden’ including the street number, was the first information we’dunearthed in forty years. A quick reference to Google maps even provided uswith a photo of the beautiful house and the name writ large on the gates. We’dwalked within less than a kilometre of it.The information that some babies from ‘Covenden’ may have been baptized

in St Paul’s was an additional pleasure so we also looked up that church.Perhaps Robin Gadd, born March 12 1941 is listed in the register? This 1941date, and Dr Norris’s 1946 date, indicate that the house sheltered women inneed, possibly for extended periods, for many years, so we would like toexpress our appreciation to the people involved. What they did was worthwhileindeed, reverberates through generations and must give the current owner of‘Covenden’ much satisfaction at living in such an historic and caringenvironment. Robin was brought up in Tasmania by a wonderful woman,Eleanor Brinton.Thank you so much ‘Hadley Wood News’ from three generations of our family

in Australia. Meanwhile, now that we have an appreciation of the area from ourwalks that day, and such a connection, we will continue to read ‘The HadleyWood News’ here on the other side of the planet, your influence is indeed ‘worldwide’. The presentation and the photographs are first class too.Kind regards,Barbara and Robin Brinton.(Nice to hear that the online version gets read too. Actually the HW website badlyneeds an update. We need help with this and would be absolutely delighted ifanyone could assist us. Ed.)

As a local resident, I’d like to share withyou plans for an exciting small housingproject in Union St High Barnet. If itcomes off, this will see on the site of thedisused St Martha’s school thedevelopment of a ‘cohousing community’

– the first of its kind inthe UK for the 50+age group. Copyinga model familiar inDenmark andHolland, we want tobring together a

group of women who will already knoweach other before they move in. Why amI involved with this? It feels just right forme – I am still fit and very active, but Iknow that living alone can become moreof a problem as one gets older and Iwould like the assurance of neighbourlysupport and companionship while stillhaving my private space. I would also liketo ‘downsize’ from my house and gardenand share a garden with others. Forminga group of neighbours who already knoweach other is what a ‘cohousingcommunity’ is about, along with sharedactivities, some common meals andmutual support, as well as personalspace and privacy. This is definitely notsheltered housing – our group has awider age-range, many of us are stillworking and we are going to run thewhole project ourselves. We also seeourselves as a demonstration project inindependent living for other people in ourage-group to learn from. Most of us will buy flats and there will

be flats at social rents for women fromBarnet Homes who are eligible. We wantmore women to join us and we areholding an information session at theStapylton Rd Library on Monday Sept 17,4.30 – 6.30. Anyone who can’t get to thatmeeting could take a look at our website,www.owch.org.uk or phone 07974737125 for further information.Angela Ratcliffe

Neighbourliness

Dear Barbara and Robin,I was fascinated to receive your email. I am the assistant minister at St Paul's churchand I think I can be of some help to you in your search simply because I spent quitea bit of time helping Carol Norris with her own search a couple of years ago.We now know that the Hampstead Mother & Baby home moved to Covenden, 17

Beech Hill in 1940 as their premises in Hampstead had been damaged by a bomb.

Jill Northam also received this mail and replied.

The home then moved back toHampstead in 1947 and eventuallyclosed in 1970. With the proceeds of salethe Fitzdale charitable trust was set upand we were able to contact a trusteewho kindly sent us a brief history fromsome of the files in Holborn PublicLibrary.I looked in the church Baptism register

yesterday morning after the service butsadly found no record of Robin'sbaptism. However I'm sure you'll beinterested to know that in 1946 there is arecord of 3 babies being baptised fromCovenden and all have just their mother'sname recorded. How frustrating to think that you were

only a few yards away from Covendenlast May but at least with moderntechnology we can fill many of the gaps.I was able to contact the present ownersof Covenden and when Carol travelleddown from Scotland she and I were

She did tell us a story that one of herdaughters when quite young often usedto say she heard babies crying in thenight – I don't know what you make ofthat?!I will contact Carol and ask her

Dear EditorRe your proposed cycle track.Congratulations on the continuedsuccess of the Hadley Wood News.Although I have not cycled for some50 years I am aware of a purposebuilt cycle path which was createdabout two years ago starting at theSouth Mimms Service Station. It runsnorth alongside Swanland Road asfar as Hawkeshead Road, nearBrookmans Park. Part of the pathruns away from the road and is treelined, two photos on the website ofthe Brookmans Park Newsletter(www.brookmans.com/) show it tobe a very attractive ride. I wouldguess it to be about a mile long andalthough it means loading the bikesin or on the car the round trip wouldbe a good outing for a family andmost of all it would be safe.Martin Thain3 Beaumont Place,Hadley Highstone.(previously of Kingwell Road50 years ago)
