th grade celebration will honor and recognize student’s aca-

Letter from the Principal

Please note:

Early dismissal (12:20 on last day of school (5/16)!

Make plans to enroll online for 2018-2019 school year!

Save yourself some time this summer.

Enroll online, pay online, and have your student take their Student ID photo during the

first week of class. You don’t need to come to the school at all !

Online enrollment will open in early July.

To enroll online, you must have a ParentVue account.

Don’t have one? Stop by the main office and get yours set up today. You can use it to

enroll, check your student’s attendance, and their grades.

The Health Room does not stock

any medications, even over-the-

counter medications, to give to stu-

dents. If you want your student to

take medicine at school, you will

have to provide it, and get a physi-

cian’s order for the school to ad-

minister.

Students are not to carry medica-

tion with them at school without the

necessary paperwork.

Again, this includes over-the- coun-

ter medications.

More News from the Nurse

If your student needs medi-

cations at school, you need

to complete a new request

and provide a new prescrip-

tion school each year. If

your student took medica-

tions this year, they will need

a new form on file for next

year to be able to continue.

If your child needs medica-

tion, please bring the com-

pleted and signed paper-

work to school after August

9, 2018. Remember to sign

the parent permission form,

obtain a doctor’s signature

and order for all prescription

medications. The doctor

must complete the dosage,

frequency, and symptoms

for administration.

Parents with students entering 7

th grade in the 2018-19 school

year:

Please schedule your student to receive the Tdap vaccine before school starts in August. A new immunization record will then need to be sent to stay on file at Hadley. If your student is not current on vaccinations, they may be excluded from school later in the fall until their immun-izations are brought up to date.

Please remember: if your student has medications at school, you will need to arrange to pick them up before the last day of school. Medications not picked up must be discarded.

Whenever you have questions regard-ing medical issues and your student, call me at 316-973-7820.

Thank you.

Pam Cornejo, School Nurse

Academics First List

At Hadley, we promote an attitude of

“Academics Come First”.

Therefore, we create a weekly list of students who are not meeting our high expectations in the classroom and have received at least one failing grade. We call this list the Academics First List

(AFL).

If a student is on the AFL, he or she cannot participate in any of the week’s activities.

The student will receive a notice during his or her Check and Connect class on Monday. The stu-dent should spend that extra time studying, working with mentors, getting some extra tutoring, or

reading so that his or her grades can improve.

We want and encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities but we also want the students to understand the importance of focusing on their academics.

Creating excellence, no excuses!

If your student calls you to pick them up from any place except the Nurse’s Office, they

will not be medically excused.

Don’t forget to call the attendance line daily at 973-7815 if your student won’t be in

school. If you do have a doctor, dentist of other professional caregivers written excuse

of absence, please bring it in on the day of the student’s return.

The School District has very specific criteria about when a student must be sent home,

based on guidelines from the Health Department. The nurse will assess students who

are not feeling well, and if a nursing assessment indicates that the student meets these

criteria, parents will be contacted.

Keep Saving your Box Tops!

The Family Engagement Commit-

tee is asking all students and their

families to save their BOXTOPS for

Education Labels. The drive contin-

ues and during the school year we

will be awarding prizes to the class-

rooms who bring in the most. The

BOXTOPS allow us to buy books and

prizes to promote independent read-

ing, and the 25 Book Campaign.

Library News from Mrs. Salerno

Summer reading is important. Students who read at least 20 minutes most days of the week will greatly improve their reading skills. Not only do children need to practice reading to get better at this important skill, when they read they will begin to enjoy reading and want to spend more time reading. Start with books which include a topic which interests the student. Use the online or onsite catalog at the public library to find books that will interest the student. Hadley students are familiar with using the library catalog and they should be able to independently search for books—but it is more fun when you do it together! And, you can always ask the librarian.

To visit the Hadley library page, find www.usd259.org/hadley, locate the library tab under pro-grams, and choose the page for the online catalog.

Thank you for your participation in the BOGO book fair! Next year’s book fairs will coincide with fall and winter conferences and we will have a BOGO fair starting May 6, 2019.

So far this year, we have used Scholastic Book Fair proceeds to purchase magazines for student use located in the library, 3 Free Book Exchange shelves for the hallways, listening stations for the 6th grade language arts classes, multiples of books titles for classroom use, and prizes for students from the book fair.

Book Swap Trade and Borrow Available in the library and throughout the building. We have a bookcase in the periodical section of the library dedicated to books that anyone can borrow or trade. You are welcome to donate to or trade with things on the shelf.

We have installed Free Book Exchange Shelves in the following locations:

F Hall – North end between Room F1 and the auditorium doors

A Hall – in one of the empty insets

E Hall – at D hall intersection on the north side of the water fountain

Students are welcome to use books from these shelves. It is great if they can return the book or

bring one to put on the shelf for trade. But, no one is keeping track! Families are welcome to

send books to put on the shelves. If there isn’t room, bring them to the library, and we will store

them until needed. This is an example of the many services provided to the students at Hadley

which are funded by the book fair.

If you are looking for a good book to read, you might like a book from the William Allen White List—we have published all of the 6-8 WAW list in previous newsletters; here is the list for 3rd grade to 5th grade. For more information on each title, visit https://www.emporia.edu/libsv/wawbookaward/masterlists/list-2017-2018 We have at least one of each in the Hadley Library.

Our area public libraries have fun summer reading and activity programs. They offer incentives and activities. The Wichita Public Library has a great summer reading program. Here is a link to see what is going on: http://www.wichitalibrary.org/Kids/Pages/summer-reading.aspx
