Gene Kain should be a syn-onym for active.

An active member of the Had-donfield community as well as anactive sports person, Kain alwaysseems to be on the go. He is a run-ner, biker and swimmer all thewhile maintaining his job at a fu-neral home as well as a memberof the Library Board of Trustees,Haddonfield Rotary Club and theYs Men.

He doesnt seem to stop.For all his contributions to the

town, past and present, Kain waschosen as the 2015 Citizen of theYear. At the Mayors Breakfast onJan. 17, Kain was honored with aspeech and plaque for beingnamed the 43rd Citizen of the

Year. However, Kain felt he could-nt have done anything that hehas accomplished without thesupport of others.

I thank you all for consideringme for this award. And the onlyreason I accept it is on the behalfof all of the people who havehelped me, so thanks to all ofyou, Kain said.

Kain was born in Germany, apart of a military family, and it

wasnt until he was about 5 yearsold that he and his family movedto Haddonfield. Since then, he hasliked Haddonfield so much he hasremained, living in the samehouse in which he grew up.

My favorite thing is thefriendliness of the community,Kain said.

Kain is an alumnus of Haddon-field Memorial High School andwent to Gettysburg College for aphysical education degree. Beingphysically active is a passion ofKains. At high school and col-lege, Kain was involved inwrestling, student council and

joined a fraternity, Sigma AlphaEpsilon. Kain is well known forhis wrestling achievements, in-cluding winning many champi-onships and being named to twoHall of Fames.

Kain met his wife Myra at col-lege and has been married for 46years. The couple has a sonMichael and daughter Rachel andtwo grandchildren with a thirdon the way. He was a physical edu-cation teacher at HMHS from1969-1974 before getting in the fu-neral business in 1979. He nowworks at Kain-Murphy Funeral

Chris Christie, is debating a run

for president of the United States

in 2016. While he hasnt officially an-

nounced whether he will throw his hat

into the ring, many believe he will do

so within the next few months.

In recent speeches, Christies focushas been on bigger national issues.

Last summer and fall, during election

season, he traveled all over the coun-

try and helped fellow Republicans

campaign for gubernatorial seats.

This past weekend, he traveled to Iowa

for a Republican summit.

All signs point to Christie announc-

ing his candidacy for president. But

would he make a good president?

According to a poll released last

week, New Jersey voters dont think

so. A Quinnipiac University poll found

that 57 percent of registered voters in

New Jersey did not think Christie

would make a good president. Almost

one-third of Republicans polled didnt

think Christie would be a good presi-

dent, along with 78 percent of Democ-

rats and 59 percent of independents.

In the same poll, 52 percent of Gar-

den State voters said they would

choose Democrat Hillary Clinton over

Christie in a hypothetical election be-

tween the two.

Christie has won two gubernatorial

elections in New Jersey by a wide

margin in a predominantly Demo-

cratic state but apparently our

states voters dont think hed be good

for the higher post. Its not altogether

surprising, and not a death sentencefor a potential bid for president either.

The last president from New Jersey,

Woodrow Wilson, didnt win his own

state, after all.

Maybe New Jersey voters just dont

think Christies personality would

work well running our country. Or

maybe they dont think his politics

would work on a global scale. Or

maybe they just want their governor

to concentrate on New Jersey while

hes still in that post.

What do science and law have to do witheach other? It is a lot more than you wouldthink.

In the application of science in con-sumer products, many items are not regu-lated as of yet because of new emergingsciences, specifically nanotechnology.

Ilise L. Feitshans, a Haddonfield residentand published author, has made it her goalto work with lawyers, as well as non-lawyers, to help them understand nan-otechnology and how it works in regard to

the law and public health.Nanotechnologys revolution for our

global economy can revolutionize publichealth," Feitshans said. "I'm fascinated bythe question: How will the benefits of nan-otechnology be realized, while minimizing

the risks? "

On Wednesday, Feb. 11, Haddonfield Pub-lic Library and the Mabel Kay House, Had-donfields senior citizens center, are join-ing forces for the first time to co-sponsor apresentation by Feitshans at the Haddon-field Public Library at 7 p.m. She will dis-cuss her forthcoming book ForecastingNano Law.

Feitshans is the co-author of a recent ar-ticle published by the Royal Society of Lon-don concerning nanomaterials policies,and the book, Forecasting Nano Law, tobe released next year, is based on heraward-winning doctoral thesis.

Nanotechnology is everywhere, whetheryou know it or not. Nanotechnology can befound in refrigerators, food, makeup, tex-tiles, solar energy and housing construc-tion materials. What is hard is identifyingwhat is considered nanotechnology and

how it affects people in their daily lives. Be-

cause nanotechnology is so new, it is hardto put regulations on it. However, nan-otechnology policy is something Feitshansfeels we should be working toward.

We have to be informed and participatein nanotechnology policy decisions. Wehave a very large exposure and not muchdata, but we still need to make these deci-sions anyway, Feitshans said.

Public health and economic concerns re-garding nanotechnology policy are, in heropinion, important to everybody. She feelslaws should be accessible whether you area lawyer or regular citizen because that is

the only way people are going to obey law.When people understand the law, they

State of the County

The future isbright in CamdenCounty and thestate of the county

is strong as wemove into 2015.

The Freeholdershave expandedour activities andprograms for dis-abled children andadults, and in-creased our efforts to providebetter services to our veteransand senior citizens. The visionplan for Cooper River Park con-tinues to evolve and construc-tion started on several portionsof the 400-acre park. We alsocompleted enhancements onseveral other parks throughoutthe county.

In 2014 we took a big step for-ward to combat the disease ofopiate dependence by commis-sioning an Addiction Aware-ness Task Force. The goals ofthe task force are to raiseawareness of this problem andto connect those in need ofservice with treatmentproviders.

Many improvements in thecounty infrastructure weremade in 2014 and will continuein the new year. We finished allmajor dam repairs and madesignificant bridge improve-ments. In addition, the state De-partment of Transportationranked Camden County as oneof the best performing countiesin the transportation trust fundgrant management program.

In the category of PublicSafety, 2014 was an extraordi-nary year. There were 1,629fewer victims of crime on thestreets of Camden City com-pared to just two years ago.Homicides have been cut inhalf and shootings have de-clined by 46 percent. Onceagain, children are playing inthe parks and playgrounds ofthe city just as children do in

every other mu-nicipality in Cam-den County.

By building on

these accomplish-ments and others,2015 will be aneven better year.The public safetyimprovements inCamden City andthe Economic Op-

portunity Act of 2013 will re-sult in the private investmentof hundreds of millions of dol-lars over the next five years.These investments will createmore than 10,000 jobs as busi-nesses from all over the worldexpand or relocate in ourcounty seat.

Furthermore, 2015 will be theyear that the unemploymentrate decreases as more resi-dents go back to work in whatwill be a historic economic re-covery in Camden City. The pri-vate investment in CamdenCity will increase the numberof residents throughout ourcounty, increase real estate val-ues and increase tax retables.Remember, a rising tide lifts allboats.

In order to meet the new de-mand for employees, CamdenCounty and its agencies willdouble down on its efforts with

On Jan. 19, it was re-ported that a suspectshoplifted a pair ofslipper boots. No

charges were signed.

On Jan. 19, a juvenile reportedher unlocked bicycle was stolen

from a bike rack to the rear of theCVS pharmacy. The parentprovided the serial numberand the bicycle was entered into

NCIC.

On Jan. 19, a victim reportedshe parked her unlocked Cannon-dale bicycle alongside the build-ing of 1 Kings HighwayEast and when she came back 45minutes later the bike wasstolen.

inars and webinars for lawyers,doctors, engineers and the gener-al public in more than 14 nationsin Europe, Asia and the UnitedStates. Making her presentationsunderstandable across cultures,across disciplines and for non-technical general audiences be-came her mission.

You should not need a PhD innanotechnology in order to un-derstand some basic policy ques-

tions that the emerging scienceraises, Feitshans said. We areall consumers of nanotechnologyapplications, and we need betterinformation in order to make

nano-based decisions in our dailylife.

Bringing this same approachhome to the Haddonfield Libraryand then into hard copy in hernew book is the next big step inthe global health educationprocess that applications of nan-otechnology require.

At the Haddonfield Library,Feitshans hopes to have an opendiscussion about nanotechnologyas well as inform residents about

the process of writing a book.Having published many books,Feitshans knows how to go aboutgetting a book published andwould like to answer questionsabout the writing process. Howev-er, since this particular book isnot published, she also plans tolisten and learn from Haddon-field residents to see if there areparticular areas of interest inand about nanotechnology and

policies.I think that Haddonfield is a

very enlightened community andinteresting group of people. Ithink that the give and take of

both what they would want toknow about nanotechnology andwhat they would like to knowabout writing would be great andintellectually stimulating, Feit-shans said.

Residents are invited to comeand get informed about nanotech-nology so they can feel comfort-able engaging in discourse aboutit. Discussing nanotechnologyand how it is used in daily life andhow it affects humans, both posi-

tively and negatively, is importantso policies can be made.People need to know this is

happening. People need to feelcomfortable engaging in the dis-course about it. They need to feelcomfortable participating if itmatters to them. And all of thiswill help grow industry becausewe will come up with sensiblerules people will follow, Feit-shans said.

Bernadette M. Hunter (neeMcLaughlin), a resident of Cher-ry Hill and formerly of Haddon-field, passed away suddenly onJan. 16 at the age of 68. She wasthe beloved wife of Robert E.Hunter Jr.; devoted mother ofRobert E., III (Genevieve) andBeth H. Sobus (Micah) both of

Cherry Hill; loving grandmotherof Hunter and Annie Sobus andMaeve and Bernard Hunter; anddear sister of James McLaughlin(Jeanne) of Jenkintown, Pa. andMaryann McKenzie of NorthWales, Pa. She is also survived bynieces and nephews, whom sheloved as her own.

A lifelong educator,Bernadette's career began and

ended in the School District ofPhiladelphia. She also taught atHaddonfield Friends School for 19years. Most importantly, she took

the time to raise Bob and Bethand support all of their activities.After a distinguished teaching ca-reer, she retired to assume therole she coveted most grand-mother. The past six and a halfyears have been devoted to hergrandchildren playing, teachingand, most importantly, lovingthem until her untimely passing.

Her favorite pastimes, asidefrom her grandchildren, werecooking for others and sitting on

the beach in Avalon with a puzzlebook.Bernadette's family received

lower than our neighbors here, so

people really are getting the bestbang for their buck here, boardpresident Glenn Moramarco said.I think that NerdWallet hit thenail on the head. It's somethingcitizens should be proud of andwe're going to keep working at it.

The Haddonfield School Dis-trict doesn't get a lot of state aid,according to Moramarco. Howev-er, he did say the district has oneof the best programs in terms ofoutside fundraising, generating alot of alternative revenue. Alter-native revenue brings in morethan half the amount of whatHaddonfield receives in state aid,according to Perry. Perry's visionis to bring in more alternativerevenue than it receives in stateaid and make that something thatis an ongoing phenomenon.

Services in Haddonfield.He didnt just stop at his job in

Haddonfield. He was also a part ofa bunch of different organiza-tions in the borough, includinghis favorite time of being on theRecreation Council, which he wason for more than 10 years.

What I did the longest was theRec Council with the kids andathletics. Being involved withthem was a big deal for me, Kainsaid.

From there, at a suggestion ofa friend, he ran for commissionerand was elected mayor by his fel-low commissioners, serving inthat position from 1997 to 2001.

I really didnt expect that tohappen. Everyone suggested it,Kain said.

He didnt run again when histerm was finished due to work ob-ligations. The expectations arehigh for the Haddonfield mayor,

and he just didnt have the time.Now, when he isnt working,

Kain has more time for his hob-bies. A fan of all sports, Kainruns, bikes and swims for fun andgets involved in triathlons allover the world. Kain has repre-sented the country a few times intriathlons in London and in otherplaces in the past few years.

Its fun to do. Representing

team USA, thats been fun, Kainsaid.

When he isnt working out he

swims almost every morning hetries to go to some concerts, usu-ally Irish or Celtic music that hasoccasionally been performed inHaddonfield. He has also taken tolearning music, taking classesand learning to play the violin atthe age of 61.

On the occasional weekendKain has off, he will travel to Ver-mont where his family has a place

that is beside a ski mountain. Inthe summer, hell do races andtriathlons. And, of course, hell

spend time with his childrenwhenever he can.

One of the races Kain is look-ing forward to this year is theGreat Chesapeake Bay Swim,which is one of the oldest run-ning open swim races and 4.5miles long. He said it is a lot ofwork to great ready for it, butbased on all Kain does, it doesntseem like it will be a problem.
