An Unkind Friend.
Editor Bulletin':It is nol often Hint I bco a copy of
the Frioml, but by some chance theistie for the current uiontn was putinto tuy hands, anil on looking orortho'fJrst or editorial article I was as-
tonished, not at the tone of the arti-cl- e
itself or at the charitable spiritof the writer, but at the amazingignorance or worse wnicli couiucrowd so many misstatements intoso small a space.
We are told thai tho "nobility ofEngland tends to profligacy." andthat "the State Church habituallyleans towards a low standard inmorals."
1 hare little personal acquaintancewith tho nobility of Euglaud and soshall not pretend to any; the editorof tho Friend, however, "most ignor-ant of what he's most assured, pro-nounces their profligacy as a dogmaof his own. Merely judging fromhistory of the past anil the currentliterature of the da v. 1 assert thatthe British House of Lords as stales- -
men, scholars, orators ntur gentle-men need not fear comparison withany legiidatho chamber iu thoworld.
The morals and teaching of tho"State Church" need no defense.Wilberforco and Mngee, Thirlwalland Ellicott, Tall ami Kyle, Selwyn,1'attesou and linniiiugtou areamongst the leaders "towards a lowstandard of moralitv"! and surely agood democrat ought to feel kiudlytowards the Bishops of the "StatuChurch" are they not all selfmademou?
Farther on wo como to tho state-ment that browing, distilling, etc.,are almost "the only commercialoccupation fit for the aristocracy."What the mitdificntiou "commercial"may Ire worth is not clear. If itmenu any person who has enrichedand raised himself and his family bymerchandise, uiveulious, authorship,or other fruits of talents and perse-verance, thou we may supposeLyou riaytair, Lord l'laylair, auuWin. Thompson, Lord Kelvin, to beof the brewuis, and Win. Armstrong,Lord Armstrong, must certainly bethe distiller, for I have boon confi-dently informed thnt he puts a dis-tillery into every vessel he builds, and the consequence is that thecrew are always, by day and byuight, distilling fresh water fromsalt

the Friend is the glorification of cer-tain persous who it seems will nottolerate "a racing I'remier." If thoFriend does nut know it, "everylarge and amnll bethel" does know, that Lord Uosebery was no more aracing I'remier ou the day of theDerby than he wns ou the day thathe was chosen by his party to suc-ceed Mr Gladstone.
Lord KoselMiry has owned racehorses ever since he was at Oxfordtwenty-liv- e years ago mid has neverconcealed the fact, llu was knownon the turf before he was known inthe Lcgialaluro. and in both sceneshas always approved himself nuhonest, upright gentleman, and isnot, so say the papers, a bettingman. for a quarter ol a ceuturythrough his whole public career --Lord Ifosebery has bceu known asan owner aud occasional starter ofrace horses. This terrible vice hasbeen condoned for all this time, audnow it seems thnt the real crime af-fecting this peculiarly partial con-ocieiic- o
is owniny, iwt only mi ordin-ary ruiWioMr, hut im rsfnioriffmiryone, not only starting but winning.

years, aud his administration uasjust been sustained in the electionsfor another tenu, tie is a Liberalin politics. Instead of a debt thoProvinco has a surplus, and it it nowonder the people stay by OHvr.
Much if not most of the expectedbenefit to Hawaii anticipated fromtho restoration of a duty on sugarby Uuited States Congress, would appoar to bo rendered nuga-
tory by the action of the Senate onthe final passage of tho bill in thatbody. An amendment was parsedwhich, whilo abrogating the recipro-city clause of the McKiuloy bill, kopt in force all existing treaties un-do- r
that clause. This leaves Hawai-
ian sugar to compote on equal termswith tho German beet aud Cubanand other Spanish countries' caneugr.
THE GREAT STRIKE.
It would be hard to conceive of amore presently calamitous or pros-
pectively disastrous industrial situa-tion than that which exists in thoUnited States. Whilo manufactur-ing industry is still prostratedthroughout large sections by a for-
midable coal millers' strike, all theimportant railway routes closedby a strike of the Americau RailwayUnion. Tho euormous loss fromstoppage of mail, freight and pas-
senger trafllo is a staggering fuctenough, but the wanton destructionof millions of dollars' worth of rail-
way other property by anarchistsin Chicago, who have long beenwaiting for such an opportunity, isven more deplorable in its exposure
of the unreadiness of constitutedauthority to cope with a serious
nergency. There really nothingauprisiug in the strike itself, im-
mense and damaging although it is,almost beyond approximate estima-tion. It simply in tothe magnitudinous extout of Ameri-
can railway enterprise. Tho labornecessary to operate the tnauy thou-
sands of miles of railway constitutesa large army in itself, aud, with anydegree of unity for tho protectionof mutual interests iu the differentsystems, this army can easily compelthe capital owning these groat arte-
ries of traffic to consult labordoing auytbiug that adversely affectsthe recompense of labor. Whilo itmay bo opeu to discussion whether,as iu the present conflict, the workersfor a single corporation might uotbetter have leeu aided in their strug-gle than by a general railway strike, involving the interests of the gen-eral pulilio so disastrously, itwould Iw hasty to conclude thatthe railway uiou have uot tho rightof their own judgment as tothe means to be employed foraiding their fellow-worke- rs of Pull-
man. That they have the sympathyof tho public in & large degree isevident from the voluminous news-paper reports to hand. They havebeen defended from many pulpitsand they have the support of in-
fluential journals. Their follow-couutrym-
enrollod in the militiahave iu some simply doaliuodto suppress them force whenbrought forward to suppress theiracts of interference with the work-ing of tho lines. The case appearsto be infinitely different, however, with the lawless elements letloose in Chicago. Leaders of thestrikers repudiate the anarchicalactions of those elements, aud thePresident of American HallwayUfilon adjure th whole number- -
ship to rerrain from all vengefulviolonco and wanton intachiof. Uponthe dogreo of promptitude aud pre-
cision with which the authoritiesshall utterly suppress the lawlessness raging, at latest accounts, inChicago will depend tho reputationof the Uuited States for stablo government. That such lawlessnesswill be ultimately suppressed thereis little reason to doubt, but ifaccomplishment bu unduly delayedthe peaceable people of Chicago audother largo cities will not feel as-
sured against tho recurrence simi-
lar disorders ou future favoring occasions. If the question of Statesovereignty, which has arisen be-
tween President Cloveland and Gov-
ernor Altgold in presence of blazingproperly and slaughtered persons, has to bo settled in the courts or byprotracted correspondence beforeorder is restored, then Chicago is tobe pitied and the United States isconfronted with the problem of areadjustment of the relations be-
tween the Federal and the Stateauthorities, which it had beou fond-
ly hoped wore definitely settled bythe war of tho rebellion. The Presi-dent seemingly was taking the sensi-
ble view of the matter, namely, thatordor should be restored first andthe constitutional question settledafterward. As Lincoln said, whencriticised for straining tho constitu-tion in his efforts to suppress therebellion, ho preferred to save theUnion before tho Constitution. Gov-
ernor Altgold angrily protested totho President that tho forces of theState of Illinois were quite adequateto the preservation of order, but,

poople's slumbers wore disquietfulfrom gloomy forebodings of themorrow. As to the strike proper, itis to bo hoped that a peaceful settle-ment may bo reached. What iswanted is commanding leadershipon behalf of the nation at largo tobring about arbitration of tho dis-
pute. Groat Britain aud tho UnitedStates have given sevoral object les-
sons to the world of the stttlomontof grave international differences bypeaceful arbitration. Lord Rose-ber- y,
sometime before he came tothe Premiership of Great Uritain, had suflli'ieut influence to have thesame beneficent principle applied tosocial war, with tho result of com-
posing a most disastrous coal uiiuera'strike that had inflicted untold lossupon untioual interests and diro dis-
tress upon thousands of working-mo- n
and their families.

We have unpacked our washstands and bath tubs from theStandard Manufacturing Co.,and are well pleased with themYou can find others of the samestyle and quality in large es-
tablishments but they have
never been shown here before. We bring to Honolulu a stockfrom which you may select what
you want without having to de-
pend upon a catalogue or thejudgment of your friendsabroad. A gentleman remark-ed to us yesterday that a friendof his has the finest bathroomhe ever saw. The informationdid not surprise us because wefurnished the pool, and we havethe article that will make an-
other bathroom look just aselegant. We have, in addi-
tion to tubs and pools, closetsof the latest patterns and im-
provements; we have washstands either corner or wall,
and in enamel ware or mar-
ble. We have very beautifulnickel plated towel racks andsoap dishes made by the samecompany and which harmonizewith the fittings on the tubs. There is no reason why thefittings of a bathroom shouldreceive less attention than thedecorations in a parlor. Trueenough it is not used as a placefor lounging in but it is a spotat which most people take agreat deal of comfort. Theidea that the bath tub may bepoked in the darkest corner of
the house has given away withother things to the inarch ofprogress; the larger andbrighter the room the betterfor sanitary arrangements.Another mistake is to put thetub in a corner; place it farenough from the wall to allowwalking around it and enablethe housekeeper to maintain apolicy of cleanliness. Wher-ever bath ttibs and wash standsare under the old order ofthings there you will findroaches; with our bath tubsmade entirely of metal andraised from the floor they will
never be. Our wash standsarc made so that every part is"get-at-ab- le with broom orbrush. Some are made ofiron and enamelled to imi-
tate marble and it is so welldone that it is difficult to tellthe difference; the marbletopsto the more expensive onesare beautiful specimens of theproduct of the Tennessee quar-ries; with the nickel platedtrimmings that go with themthey make handsome piecesfor any room. Take it all in
all we have the bath goods thepeople want, people who liketo scratch their backs withouthaving to clean their fingernails afterward.
For the past week we havehad a man adjusting our Sew-
ing Machines and putting themin condition for delivery at thehomes of the people who want"Wertheims," the only sewingmachine made that will makethree different stitches withoutchanging the thread or needle. The action is perfect and theadjustment as perfect as a sew-
ing machine can be made "noHood's Sarsaparilla feeling"after running a "Werthcim,"the bearings are so regulatedthat a child can run the ma-
chine without feeling fatigued. When you are buying a ma-
chine just consider that in
ours you get something thatwill sew three stitches withoutchanging the shuttle, for lessmoney than you will pay inother places for a plain everyday sewing machine.
