Weather Forecast -Keep the umbrella handy. There is at least a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms every day. The good news is that it does keep the temperatures a little cooler for this time of year. The high on the 4th will just be in the upper 70’s. It begins rising from there reaching the mid to upper 80’s by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Did you manage some work life balance last week without me? I was in Seattle where it did not rain once during the week and highs were close to 90 every day. It was nice but truthfully, I was hoping for a little cooler. Instead, it’s a little cooler here for the 4th of July. For Nashville, this weekend is all about the 4th with the big celebration downtown, the Hot Chicken Festival in East Nashville, and celebrations in towns all across Middle Tennessee. You can get an early start with the Thirth of July Block Party, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture: A Star Spangled Evening with the Nashville Symphony, and The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Franklin Theater. It’s Art Crawl Weekend and the Nashville downtown one has moved to Friday night for July. Featured Place of the Week  

The Yellow Porch – 374 Thompson Lane  -   I had a wonderful dinner last night at Yellow Porch.  The company was great, the service excellent and the food delicious.  With all of these new places opening, it is important to not forget these great places that have been here a while.  I first wrote about Yellow Porch in 2011 and following is what I said then and it still holds true except updating price range a little.   Driving by The Yellow Porch, you would probably never guess it is a fantastic Nashville restaurant.  It’s location is not great as it is tucked away by itself across from 100 Hundred Oaks Mall.  Inside, it is not a large space and in fact, very quaint.  The highlight of Yellow Porch is the food.  It is in my Nashville top 5 list.    The Rand McNally reviews states,  “Relaxed yet elegant atmosphere is well suited for a romantic dinner or impressing business clients over lunch.”  The menu has many options and as a vegetarian, it is one of the few places where I go with more than 1 or 2 options.  While eclectic, the menu takes Mediterranean food and gives it a southern twist.  I have a friend who raves about the Celery Blue Cheese Soup.  The appetizers and salads are great.  Lunch menu is packed with choices of great salads and sandwiches.    For dinner, I love the Mediterranean Vegetable Lasagna but for you meat eaters, there are great choices of steak, seafood, chicken, lamb and pork.  Finally, I love a place with great desserts and all of the ones at Yellow Porch are made there and amazing.  My favorite is the bananas foster bread pudding which is just totally and completely yummy.  Yellow Porch is open for lunch and dinner on Monday through Saturday.  Parking can be tough but worth it.  Expect to pay between $8 and $10 for lunch entrée and between $14 and $30 for dinner ones.  More information and menus at http://www.theyellowporch.com/index_inside.php.

Hip Hues – 500 Houston St – This is an interesting concept and business started by a former Graduate Assistant of mine. Basically, you learn about screen printing in a fun and social setting (think Sips and Strokes) and get to screen print original artwork onto t-shirts, canvas totes, and canvas prints.  The workshop will have a theme and design.  In addition, they will come to a private event and create the t-shirts, totes, and prints on site.  They have artists who will help you create the design.  You can check out the website or Facebook page for upcoming events.  The workshops are $35.  Cost of private events varies based on the size and location of the event.  More information at http://hip-hues.com/about/
