Dear Friends in Christ,
In last week’s bulletin column, I mentioned Cornelius Jansen, the Catholic bishop who was condemned for teaching
about nature and grace in a way which was perilously close to Puritanical Protestantism. There were a number of in-
credibly famous and fascinating people who were involved with the Jansenist movement in some way or another. A
convent of nuns flourished at a place called Port-Royal under the guidance of a woman of steel named Mère Angelique.
The philosopher and writer Blaise Pascal was a fan of the movement. Many were serious Christians who were horri-
fied by the moral degeneracy they saw in both Church and State, but their obsession with their own perfection at the
expense of basic human mercy and compassion, and their increasing rebellion against the communion of the Church,
caused ripples within the Church for centuries. Catholics particularly in Ireland and France were formed by a Jansenist
spirituality whose traces can still be discerned.
One of the more interesting aspects of the Jansenist movement was a concern over liturgical worship. A synod was
held in Pistoia, Italy, in 1786, which made concrete proposals by which the Jansenists sought to manipulate the liturgy
to advance their ideas. In theory, they sought to restore Christianity to a supposed primitive purity. But in doing so,
they called for drastic reductions in saints feast days, indulgences, processions, images and the veneration of relics.
They argued for purging from the Mass and the Divine Office what was not purely Scriptural. They called for the ver-
nacular instead of Latin to be used at Mass. It was all a convenient way to consolidating their own power as the “pure”
interpreters of the Gospel and attacking their enemies inside the Church. Interestingly enough, many of these same
proposals resurfaced again in the 20th century, and, in not quite as radical a way as the Jansenists wanted, have refash-
ioned the experience of Catholic worship ever since.
The Jesuits were the principal adversaries of the Jansenists. They were convinced that man could be saved even with
imperfect contrition, and that God is always loving and merciful, putting the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for all
men at the heart of their preaching. While the Jansenists removed images from churches and taught our own moral
perfection, the Jesuits introduced the image and devotion of the Sacred Heart and taught reliance on Jesus’ mercy and
love. Both groups were enthusiastic and zealous in reaching others with their ideas. Interestingly enough, Jansenism
was actually very popular among laypeople and religious who wanted a perfect Church that didn’t necessarily have to
be coextensive with the visible Church, while the Jesuit message was still very tied to the priesthood, the sacraments
and visible communion with the Church.
Catholics found themselves with two very different models of living the Gospel message: one formally condemned as
heretical by churchmen whose Christian witness was less than inspiring and the other which resonated deeply in Cath-
olic people who wanted hope and the life of the tradition of the Church. Jansenism was attractive, but essentially life-
denying, and so it had had a long sputtering death throughout the centuries. The devotion to the Sacred Heart, and
the emphasis on the mercy and compassion of the Savior, may not have eclipsed puritanical tendencies in the Church,
but certainly has won over more converts to God than the followers of Jansen. If today’s laxity is a reaction to Jansen-
ism, the answer is not in more Jansenist puritanism, but in the hope filled message of the Gospel as demonstrated in
the Sacred Heart of the Divine Redeemer.

Fr Smith’s advent reading is Searching for and Main-
taining Peace: A Small Treatise on Peace of Heart by Fr
Jacques Philippe. It can be purchased for $7.95 from
Amazon.
• About the book: We live in an age character-
ized by agitation and lack of peace. This tendency
manifests itself in our spiritual as well as our sec-
ular life. In our search for God and holiness, in
our service to our neighbor, a kind of restless-
ness and anxiety take the place of the confidence
and peace which ought to be ours. What must
we do to overcome the moments of fear and
distress which assail us? How can we learn to
place all our confidence in God and abandon
ourselves into his loving care? This is what is taught in this simple, yet profound little treatise
on peace of head. Taking concrete examples
from our everyday life, the author invites us to
respond in a Gospel fashion to the upsetting situ-
ations we must all confront. Since peace of heart
is a pure gift of God, it is something we should
seek, pursue and ask him for without cease. This
book is here to help us in that pursuit.
Did you know our St. Vincent de Paul Society helps between 170-200 people every month with food, utility assistance and clothing? Together with the Knights of Columbus 9184, they have identified over 100 families in need of generosity this Thanksgiving. From monies raised at the 24th annual Craft Fair & Gift Show, 90 meals will be purchased! But, there are more in need. Here are ways to help:• consider supporting a family in need with a dona-
tion of $50/meal (in an envelope marked Thanks-giving and dropped in a SVdP box in the Church)
• help deliver meals on Thanksgiving morning! Sign up at http://bit.ly/turkeyPOP
• donate gently used coats for children in sizes medium, large and XL (a few baby and toddler sizes are needed) (marked in box in Narthex)
Questions? Contact Simone Imber (SvdP) at [email protected].
The Parish office will close at noon on Tuesday, 26 November through Friday, 29 November in ob-servance of Thanksgiving.

Happy 10th Anniversary, Fr Tomlinson!
A Letter from Fr Christopher Smith on the occasion of
Fr Tomlinson’s 10th ordination anniversary:
I first met Richard Tomlinson when I was a newly minted priest
and he was just coming into the diocese. We both survived St
Mary’s, Greenville together, and forged a friendship that has
been one of the most rewarding of my life. I was privileged to
be at his Ordination as a Priest and First Mass, and I was struck
how the date of his ordination was the Presentation of the
Blessed Virgin in the Temple, the beautiful feast of the virtue of
religion. There were many reasons in 2011 that I accepted to
come to Prince of Peace, but one of the highest on my list was
to be able to build something beautiful for God with a man who,
year by year, I increase in respect for. He and I may have al-
most opposite temperaments and character, but in its weird
way, I think that complementary is one of the many graces that make Prince of Peace work. I’m blessed to have my “A
team” of staff in the parish, but, if there is a jewel in the crown, it really is the man who we all refer to affectionately as
Father T.
I know for a fact that Father T would do his (in)famous eye roll and infectious laugh to hear himself described like that,
but he, and his ministry, deserve to be, not just commemorated, but celebrated! There are many who call Prince of
Peace their spiritual home, and many more beyond the confines of this parish, whose lives will never be the same be-
cause of the way he responds Fiat day in and day out to the Lord’s call for discipleship and ministry.
I was present at Father’s defense of his doctoral dissertation in biblical theology at the Angelicum in Rome, and it was
there that I finally began to get a grasp on the formidable intellect that hides out behind his quiet exterior. I have
learned a tremendous amount from this man. In any number of cases, we have been talking about any number of sub-
jects under the sun, and I am amazed at his breadth and depth of knowledge. History, politics, sports, classic movies,
food, languages, theology, the Bible: he has to be the most intellectually and culturally stimulating cleric I have ever met.
And y’all know, I am always searching out deep conversation partners to drink deeply from their wisdom. His humility
in the way in which he shares that seemingly endless knowledge is something I keep a holy envy for!
I’m also privileged to get to see how Father lives his priesthood in a way that many of you might not get to see, at least
the way I do. Richard Tomlinson is a priest’s priest. This is a man who has a deep interior life, and much of the spir-
itual powerhouse that is our parish is from his constant prayer. To see him celebrate Mass and pray the traditional
office, to study and spend time in contemplative prayer with God, in the church, in the rectory chapel, is edifying and
delightful. Father and I, in theory, divide up the week for who’s on call for emergencies, but in so many cases, as I am
burdened by the administrative tasks proper to the pastor, he somehow attends to those important events. You know
when this priest has been at the bedside of a loved one; you can’t easily forget the presence of the Lord shining
through him. Mercy and compassion with him are not showpieces, but
authentic and spring forth from a deep faith. You will never know the con-
solation this priest of God has brought so many people for so many years.
We playfully joke about our parish as the confession capital of Greenville.
While Father T many not be Padre Pio, he has an ever increasing number
of people who seek out his spiritual counsel. Even though he is my paro-
chial vicar, and in churchese I am his “superior”, I am blessed to learn from
his prudent and loving counsel. I’m one of my many who look to him as a
spiritual father, and at the same time have the opportunity to live, work
and pray with him as a brother. I’ve lived with many priests in my time,
but I have never enjoyed the experience as much I have with our Father T.
Ad multos annos to a much-loved father, brother and friend. Please join me
and our parish family in celebrating ten years of faithful ministry for Father T, and in looking forward with joyful hope
to so many more.
