Additional Soil Investigation Slope Cuts Along Upper Portion of Road "A" (Phase 4)
Gentlemen:
Ahuiiilanu Vilia Subdivisia.n (Woodridge) Ahuimanu, Oahu, Hawaii
In this letter, we summarize the results of our additional
soil investigation in the above referenced subdivisi6n.
The work was performed according to our proposal dated
June 21, 1979.
The originally planned cut slope in this area was designed
at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical (2:1) and had a maximum vertical
height of up to 40 feet. In order to increase the level lot
areas for this portion of the project, a 1!-;z horizontal to
1 vertical (1!-;z:l) slope ratio is being considered for the
cut slope. The revised slope cut will have a vertical slope
heigt of up to 90 feet.

The grading plan, included with this report a Plate· 1',
indicates the approximate loc.tions of the three subsur-
face borings.
Field Exploration
 '
The field work consisted of three additional xploratoiy
borings (21, 23 and 41 feet deep) and a visQal reconnaissance
of the proposed cut area. The drilling was accomplished u.sing
trucl<-1Jlounted, rotary drilling equipment with continuous flight,
solid stem auger. The borings were continuously inpected.
by an engineering geologist from our firm. The boring logs
are presented on Plates A-1 through A-4.
In all borings, either standard split spoon samples or 2.4-
inch I.D. ring samples were taken at selecte depth intervals
of approximately 5 feet. Both the standard penetration test
spoon and the ring sampler were driven 18 inches with a 140·
pound hammer falling ·a distance of 30 inches. The number' of
blows required to drive the samplers the last 12 inches. is
shown on the boring logs.

Soil Cortditions
Based on the borings and field observations, .the sioe are·
underlain by a strata of clyey silt and highly·wetherd : . . '• .. . ', . ·. . •. volcanic-s (residual soil}. The surface soil deposits .GOI1- . · · . sist of fr·om 3 to 19 feet· of clayey silt with little .gravl. · The Upper soil stratum is generally stiff to very stiff. ·The
'· underlying :formation geneally cortsists of very stif to hard
but highly weathered volcanics (the term.volcanics is used'
herein to describe undifferentiated complex rocks consisting
of dikes and lavas of the Koolau volcanic series); see Plate 2.
Detailed description of materials encountered .are ·presented·
on the boring logs attachd.
Very slight perched water seepage, and groundwater was encoun
tered in Boring 3 (35 feet ,deep). Presence ofarbonate deposits
in this and in other borings generally confirms previous exten
sive perched water levels.

Because of the relatively low calculated values £or·.th

it is very important to provide intermediate terraces at

surface water and groundwater, and helv the overall stability
of the slope.

dike formation and resultant perched watet levels, some shallow

Investigation Limitations
Our services consist of professional opinions and recommen-
dations made in accordance with generally accepted soil and
foundation enginering principles and practices. This war
ranty is in lieu of all other warranties either expressed or

The analyses and recommendations submitted in this report
are based on our site reconnaissance, soil information from
.boring data and laboratory. tests obtained from this soil

Unanticipated soil conditions are conuilonly encountered and
cannot be fully determined by taking soil borings. These
unforeseen conditions such as soft spots and seepage water
may occur fn localized areas.
