FEDERAL RESERVE statistical release For immediate release August 19, 1964 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended August 12: decreases of $197 million in loans adjusted, $244 million in holdings of U. S. Government secu- rities, $339 million in demand deposits adjusted, $329 million in U. S. Government demand deposits, and an increase of $203 million in time and savings deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased in most districts and a net of $174 million; during the comparable week a year ago these loans increased $39 mil- lion. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government secu- rities decreased $262 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities decreased $44 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions "decreased $154 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions increased= $27 million, as compared with increases of $47 million and $50 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1963. Real estate loans increased $70 million. "Other" loans increased $5 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased $221 million and the combined total of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds de- creased $23 million. "Other" securities increased $18 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased in seven districts including decreases of $222 million i n New York City, $51 million in the Boston District, $39 million in the San Francisco District and increases of $64 million in the St. Louis District and $48 million in the Cleveland District. Savings deposits increased $60 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $117 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks de- creased $531 million but borrowings from others increased $349 million.
