INCO in H2020 vs FP7• No ad-hoc INCO Work Programme

• No Specific Actions having the inclusion of MPCs as eligibility criteria but open topics

• Open topics

• Instruments: research & innovation actions or support actions (horizontal issues, policy, cooperation and dialogue)

• International cooperation hidden accross pillars and challenges

Methodology

• Analysis of WPs 2014-2015 of H2020 identifying topics having geographic focus or being of potential thematic interest for the Mediterranean Partner Countries

• Grouping topics into four cathegories:1) Direct geographic relevance (Mediterranean)2) Indirect geographic relevance (ENP, Africa, S&T agreemets…)3) International cooperation connotation (no geographic focus)4)Thematic relevance (potential thematic interest for MPCs)

Thematic dimension (1/2)

Also in this case, there is an higher concentration of relevant topics in Pillar III, therefore it is worth showing which SC are addressed by the selected topics. Food is again the SC mainly addressed (37%).

As for the thematic dimension, on a total of 36 topics which have been deemed to have a particular relevance to the current themes and challenges of the Mediterranean region, the majority are under Pillar II and III

Thematic dimension (2/2)

The 36 topics with thematic relevance for the Mediterranean have been grouped under the following themes: Food, Health, Energy, Water, Environment/Climate Change, Research governance, Gender, Logistics. Some topics have been identified addressing the nexus Health/Energy, Food/Energy, Health/Food.

Conclusions (1/2)• Mediterranean dimension in WPs 2014-15 is rather limited (3 topics, all in SC

Pillar).

• Important presence of topics addressing Mediterranean countries in association with other countries/regions (11 topics, ranging from research infrastructure, NCPs, small farms, climate change...)

• Extended set of topics encouraging international cooperation (77 topics). These topics are open to all countries and are of potential interest for the Mediterranean since they address relevant themes (innovation, natural resources, health, agro-food, energy, transport, climate change, sustainable development, security).

Page 17: H2020: the international cooperation dimension Claudio BOGLIOTTI, CIHEAM-IAMB Marinella GIANNELLI, CIHEAM-IAMB.

Conclusions (2/2)• High variety of topics with no reference to international cooperation nor to the

Mediterranean but with a high thematic relevance (Food, Health, Energy, Water, Environment/Climate Change, Research governance, Gender, Logistics).

• All topics identified mainly belong to two types of actions: Coordination and Support Actions and Research and Innovation Actions.

• Wide range of topics (other than the ones addressing only the Mediterranean) offering good opportunities for research actors of this region – either in thematic issues or cross-cutting activities.

• A major attention and effort of NCPs in essential. NCPs which could act as a hub connecting European and non-European Mediterranean researchers and institutions.
