Questions

Here are some incorrectly formed questions. Try to correct them.

Why people take such dangerous risks?

Questions are often formed in this way:

Question word(s) + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb

How much does this bag cost?

When did he go?

What have they done?

Why DO people take such dangerous risks?

Can you tell me how did you feel afterwards?

With ‘indirect’ questions the word order of the subject (and auxiliary) and main verb is the same order as in statemens.

e.g. Do you think he is doing his homework?

Are you going to ask me what I bought?

Did he was waiting for you to jump?

Be, can and have (got) just change the order of the subject and auxiliary verb.

e.g. He is watching TV. > Is he watching TV?

They can swim > Can they swim?

You have got time > Have you got time?

X wasWas he waiting for you to jump?

Question tags are generally formed with the auxiliary of the verb in the first part of the sentence. Positive statements generally have negative question tags, negative statements generally have positive question tags.

e.g. You don’t like him, do you? They have a boat, don’t they?

Let’s go home, shall we?

When you went bungee – jumping?

Question word(s) + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb

To ask about a period of time we can use How long....?

e.g. How long have you known him?

How long are they staying?

How long have you been doing this sport?

Of what are you afraid?

Prepositions generaaly come at the end of questions (except in very formal situations).

e.g. Who did you go to the cinema with?

What were you talking about?

If who/which/what is the subjectsubject of the sentence, do not use do/does/did.

e.g. Who invented the telephone?
