PREPARING FOR YOURFIRST DAY
Structure: Schedule time to set expectations forcommunication with your supervisor on your firstday. Good questions to ask include: how he/shewould like to be informed of your work progress(emails, meetings, phone calls?) and how oftenhe/she would like to meet to provide feedback inperson (ideally once a week). If you hope to takeany days off, make sure to discuss the vacationtime policies with your supervisor before makingplans. Managing communications andexpectations is an important part of your summerexperience. Location: What is your organization’s physicaladdress? What mode of transportation will youuse to get there? How long will it take? Make sureyou know the answers to these questions well inadvance of your first day. If possible, do a trial runbefore your start date to confirm whatever yourGPS is telling you. And don’t be late! Try to arrive5-10 minutes prior to your start time. Rememberto consider the time of day you'll be commuting.Rush hour can add additional time to yourcommute. Have fun: Yes, you’re there to learn and makeimportant contributions to your organization, butdon’t forget to make friends and have some funwhile you’re at it! Page 3
