HOME P OYDRAS New Orleans to the heart Since 1817 The Poydras Promise Summer 2011 J ay Rivé, CEO of Poydras Home, recently announced at family and community meetings held at Poydras, that after extensive research and study, the Board of Trustees has approved a new three-story building to be built on its scenic three-acre campus Uptown. The unanimous board decision supports a strategic and selective expansion of Poydras Home to meet the increasing needs of the elderly in such critical areas as Memory Care and Assisted Alzheimer’s. The new building and additional programs will meet the rapidly growing needs of the greater New Orleans community for assisted dementia and classic assisted living. Presently, Poydras provides a specialized 10 bed Alzheimer’s Unit, 30 beds for assisted care, 24 nursing beds, and a day program both for Alzheimer’s and assisted adult day participants. The first floor of the new building will provide 11 apartments for assisted dementia and the second and third floors will each provide 11 apartments for classic assisted living. “With the addition of 33 apartments in assisted dementia and classic assisted living, along with the enhanced programs and new activities the new building will house, Poydras will be able to continue to do what it does best - providing the best possible quality of care and innovative programs that allow residents and day participants to enjoy life to the fullest in a beautiful and historic setting,” said Mr. Rivé. The Board engaged national senior living care housing consultants to design a state of the art structure to meet the requisite spatial requirements and social needs of assisted dementia and classic assisted living residents. Joining the project team locally are architects Mathes Brierre, who embraced the passion and commitment of the Poydras Board to preserve the open green spaces and maintain the architectural integrity of the historic campus. The new building will frontally align with and emulate the architectural façade of the existing historic Main House that faces Magazine Street. Several principles guided the design and location of the new building,” said Dena Olivier, Board President. “It is paramount that we preserve Poydras’ park-like setting, with its beautiful oak trees and the cherished green space. It is equally important to retain in the new building architectural elements of the historic Main House. And, lastly, the new addition needs to connect and integrate to the Main House to maintain our unique sense of community - one of Poydras’ strongest attributes. Although the experience of Poydras Home has meant so much to so many generations ever since its founding in 1817, Poydras Home, historically, has always been a “home” in progress, ever-evolving to meet the changing needs of the residents we serve, from first caring for widows and orphans to now lovingly caring for our elderly who have so lovingly cared for us. As trustees, we know we are charged with meeting the needs of our community and of our campus, strengthening and expanding our services and programs, and continuing the mission of Poydras.” Architectural drawings are on display at Poydras Home. Groundbreaking is planned for late fall and construction of the $14 million expansion is expected to take until the end of 2012. Also included in the larger project are renovations to the Main House. Updates will appear in future issues of the Promise. New Building at Poydras Meets Changing Needs

It’s hard to believe that half of this year is over! So many exciting events and even new plans for an expansion have made time fly.

In March, the Poydras Home hosted our largest Mardi Gras Ball ever. The court included three pages, four sub-debs, a wonderful Krewe of Poydras, a Krewe of Residents, and our enchanted King and Queen, Mr. and Mrs. James J. “Jimmy” Legeai.

In April, Poydras Home was the host venue for the Junior League’s Annual Spring Easter Egg Hunt. Our Residents enjoyed the scene of the children’s chaotic search for eggs amid the beauty of a spring day in the garden. We are fortunate to have this rewarding partnership with the New Orleans Junior League.

In May, Poydras Home hosted on behalf of the Greater New Orleans Alzheimer’s Association the first-ever Alzheimer’s Association Literary Luncheon with Buddy Stahl as Master of Ceremony. What an incredible event it was. Thank you to all who helped with and supported this year’s event which raised money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association, a valued partner that works tirelessly to battle this debilitating illness.

In June, Poydras Home announced plans for our exciting renovation and expansion after a year and a half of interviewing architecture firms, conducting “Needs Assessments,” “S.W.O.T. Analyses,” “Financial Molding and Modeling Studies,” and meetings vis-à-vis design to determine the best use of the property to ensure the best possible strategic planning. All the hard work paid off

when we unveiled expansion plans to the residents and the community and the architectural designs were well received. A new building will house 22 “Classic” Assisted Living apartments and 11 “Dementia” Assisted Living apartments. Also, Poydras Home

plans to renovate the 1960’s Wing creating new dining and therapy rooms. We expect the permitting process to be complete in early October, construction to begin in early December, and we look forward to completion of the project in December of 2012.

And finally in July, Poydras Home celebrated a very special Fourth, when resident, Mrs. Katherine Bergeret, turned “101” on Independence Day!

As you can see, we’ve been busy at Poydras Home planning and celebrating. We are enjoying our summer events while committees are busy planning already this fall’s Art Show and Patron Party. We look

forward to seeing you this summer and fall at the Poydras home. It’s an exciting time to be on campus!

Sincerely,

Jay RivéChief Executive Officer

Road Trip!Nine Hunter House residents, six staff and five family members boarded the Poydras bus for a one-day excursion to Laplace, Louisiana for a “Cajun Swamp Tour!” This is the fourth out of town trip for loved ones with Alzheimer’s organized and supervised by Poydras’ professional staff and caregivers in the past three years!

On the BusDirector of Hunter House Faith Caluda (LPN), Poydras LPN Linda Baker, Activities Manager Ida Caston (CNA), CNAs’ Jira Morgan and Connie Brown, Poydras Driver Elisa Carlisle, and Hunter House family members, Karen and Fred Trowbirdge, Elizabeth McMillan, Ruth Herkes, Dufour Bayle, and Dr.

Harry Winters escorted the residents throughout the day.

“Cajun Pride” Swamp TourUpon arriving by bus at the famous Manchac Swamp, residents donned with hats and sunglasses boarded a covered flat boat with their personal tour guide, “Croc Man,” for a unique journey back to the early days of the Louisiana Bayou and swamp explorations.

Croc MaN“Croc Man’s” quick wit and outgoing “Cajun” personality made the tour so much fun as he explained all of the animals and history of the swamp - alligators, raccoons, birds, wild

plant life! As the boat drifted along the waterways, the swamp creatures peaked out from the underbrush and moss covered trees. “Croc Man” called to the alligators and fed them marshmallows enticing them to come closer to the boat. When the boat ride was over, several Poydras Home staff held a baby alligator!

Welcome HomeHunter House has posted photos and shared highlights of the trip. A great time was had by all!!

We can’t say it Enough- Thank you!!

Annual AppealAnnual Appeal is the cornerstone of giving to Poydras Home. It includes unrestricted giving from all sources and supports Poydras Home’s operations, programs and activities. Poydras Home’s excellent staff ratios, quality caregivers, improvements to the home, and support for Alzheimer’s and dementia programs are all funded in part by the Annual Appeal.

EndowmentThe Poydras Home Endowment Fund ensures Poydras’ future as a continuing care retirement community and assures the perpetuation of its mission of quality, compassionate care for future generations. Income generated from the Endowment Fund supports general operations, property and capital improvements, and resident subsidies.

Annual Art Show & Patron PartySupport for Poydras Home’s annual fundraiser as a sponsor, donor, contributor, patron, artist, or volunteer assists Poydras in raising funds for a specific need. Participating artists donate a percentage of sale proceeds to Poydras. In 2007 the fundraiser purchased a new 18 passenger bus for residents. In 2008 funds were dedicated to new therapeutic hydra-spas. In 2009 proceeds purchased a resident car for transportation to doctor’s appointments and offsite therapy sessions. In 2010 proceeds funded a storm emergency generator.

Memorials & GiftsThe generous support of gifts made to Poydras Home in memory of or in honor of someone special directly supports the operations of Poydras. These very thoughtful gifts offer a special way to remember those you love, or to recognize a kindness received or service rendered.

Pastoral CarePoydras Home nurtures the spiritual, as well as the physical requirements of our community. Poydras retains a full-time chaplain who ministers daily to the emotional and spiritual needs of residents, families, and staff. Donations to Pastoral Care support the Chaplaincy Program providing two non-denominational religious services weekly and year-round support for 10 visiting ministers from five religious denominations.

As a Result of Your Generosity and Patron Support thatBegan with Julien Poydras’ Original Bequest in 1817,

Poydras Home has Stood the Test of Time

Continuing Your Support

The 1817 Founders CircleThis spring Poydras announced a new donor recognition circle, The 1817 Founders Circle, for all donors who make an annual unrestricted gift of $1,000 and above to the Annual Appeal. As a member of The 1817 Founders Circle you receive special benefits. Members will be recognized in the Poydras Promise, listed on The 1817 Founders Circle Recognition Board in the Historic Hall, and will receive an exclusive invitation to a special annual recognition event. But the strongest benefit of all is the satisfaction found in maintaining the continuity of 200 years of “quality, compassionate care for those who so lovingly cared for us.”

The 1817 Founders Circle Giving Levels$1,000 $1,817 $2,500 $5,000
