Great excitement at the gallery recently as some of Australia’s best-known cartoonists gathered for the 32nd Annual Rotary Cartoon Awards. In this weird Covid 19 year, the sellout event had cartoonists and cartoon lovers travelling from far afield to the gallery, or tuning in online, as the eagerly awaited announcement of this year’s winners took place. Some very clever video acceptance speeches kept the audience entertained when the winner could not be present - with some thinking there should have been a prize for ‘best acceptance video speech’! The Rotary Cartoon of the Year award went to John ‘Polly’ Farmer with a brilliant entry into the Special topic ‘Crisis, which Crisis?’, inspired by the catastrophic year that has been 2020. This popular, nation-wide competition features cartoons, caricatures and comic art from many of Australia’s most admired and well known cartoonists. Come to the Gallery to view the best of the best on the walls at this outstanding tribute to Australia’s cartooning talent. The exhibition runs until 28 February 2021, so will still be on in the Bunker when the new gallery opens towards the end of January with an exclusive Bill Leak Exhibition. For more details check out our website. Special thanks to Coffs City Rotary and Thrifty for their generous financial donations, once again contributing the prize money for all 13 winners! Their generosity has helped ensure this great event continues to recognise the incredible talent of our cartoonists as well as bringing the cartooning community together - and for many, what a great event to have as their first time out of lockdown! join the bunker family! we are looking for volunteers... to find out more drop in or give us a call SUMMER HOLIDAY workshops! SUMMER 2020

THE UNDERGROUND THE NATIONAL CARTOON GALLERY NEWSLETTER

Awards night snaps from top left: Two of our dedicated volunteers, Liz & Kerrie. Tony Lopes with his Award-Winning entry. Chairman Paul presenting Councillor George Cecato with his own caricature by the talented Steve Panozzo, in recognition of George’s many years of support for the Gallery. Three of our amazing line up of winners, Judy Nadin, Steve Panozzo & David Rowe. The ‘giggle’ of cartoonists that jumped on planes, buses and trains to be at the 32nd Rotary Cartoon Awards. Sadly, due to the restrictions of Covid, many others were unable to attend. Thank you everyone – what a great night it was once again! Let’s hope that next year those of you who missed out because we simply couldn’t have the usual numbers in the gallery can all be with us in 2021.

Marg’s Message As 2020 ends I imagine many of you are heaving a sigh of relief and looking towards a brighter 2021! We certainly are as we head into Christmas and the New Year.

Despite such a difficult year all round, we are very pleased that the builders have been able to continue working and the new gallery has risen steadily on City Hill. We had hoped to open the doors in early January but final completion, particularly cleaning up around the site and carrying out landscaping, was interrupted by a week of rain. So although the building is almost complete, we don’t expect to be opening the new gallery until towards the end of January. The Rotary Cartoon Awards have once again filled the gallery and are a tribute to the amazing talent of our Australian Cartoonists. If you haven’t been to the gallery lately, make sure you come in and check it out over the Christmas Holidays and bring your family and friends.I’d like to draw attention to the wonderful work our volunteers do each and every day. They are the lifeblood of the gallery and a special thanks goes to them for once again keeping the gallery open and looking great despite some of the inconveniences of working around a busy building site! Finally I would like to wish every one of you a very happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you here at the Gallery in the coming months.- Margaret

SUMMER 2020

TOONS FOR WILDLIFE, our first post shutdown exhibition was a popular initiative of Mark Tippett from TIPPETTURES. Motivated to help after the devastating fires earlier in the year, Mark rallied our Aussie cartoonists who contributed over 90 original works to create this fundraising exhibition in aid of WIRES. The gallery donated a portion of opening night ticket sales as well as print sales during the exhibition and together with the online auction ran by Mark we raised over $2,100! Well done all those who donated, bought artworks and visited the exhibition. It’s great to see the community get behind this wonderful cause.

THE NEW GALLERY has finally been revealed! It was incredibly exciting to see the scaffold come down early this month to reveal our fabulous new building. The ambitious plan to expand the gallery was born almost 3 years ago and with the dedication of the gallery staff, volunteers and support of the community and of course the major financial support of the NSW government. This incredible milestone in our grand plan is so close to fruition with final completion due in January. As our builders from FM Glenn continue to finish off the gallery interior and external landscaping, we are busy planning our first exhibition of Bill Leak works in the new gallery space as well as our grand opening with the community. Be sure to follow us on socials, keep an eye on the website and join our mailing list to be sure to get all the details of these great events around a major new attraction for our community.
