IMAGINATION & INTEGRITY Since our founding in 1977, Hughes Group Architects has secured a national reputation for both the imagination required for innovative designs and the integrity needed for on-time, in-budget project completions. Our projects are consistently distinguished, receiving design awards from the American Institute of Architects and other professional, civic and industry organizations at local, state and national levels.
Our staff of 22 architects and administrative personnel are organized into project teams which remain consistent throughout the course of a project to ensure the accuracy and completeness of design determinants. Every project is reviewed by our entire staff on a regular basis to focus the energy of all staff members and apply the experience gained from each of our completed buildings to your project.
We continually balance three objectives on all of our projects:
• Cost Control vigilance must occur from initial design throughout construction and occupancy.
• An Operational Perspective must penetrate all decision making to ensure functional, energy efficient and low maintenance facilities.
• Quality Design must accurately reflect the desires of our clients and the cultural context of their built environment.

Sustainability
Hughes Group Architects has been practicing Sustainable Design for over 30 years. Since the early 1980s, we have pioneered sustainable design measures such as daylight harvesting, natural ventilation, the use of sustainable materials and energy reclamation for water and space heating systems. Over the last 15 years we have continued to innovate with and integrate sustainable design into each project including the use of vegetated roofs, rainwater harvesting, solar hot water heating, and other strategies to achieve the sustainability goals sought by specific projects. today, with five lEED Accredited Professionals in house, we continue our commitment to the design, innovation, and implementation of Sustainable Design. Hughes Group’s experience with Sustainable Design allows us to provide our clients with designs that meet their sustainability goals without compromising durability, maintenance, or budget.
Our approach to Sustainable Design balances initial construction costs with long term life cycle costs of building systems to provide optimum cost effective designs. We have successfully achieved lEED Gold, Silver, and certified designations for multiple projects using this methodology.

the coastal carolina recreation and convocation center will serve as the primary focus of student life at coastal carolina university by combining three major program elements: a 3,500-seat multipurpose arena, a student recreation center, and the student bookstore.
Key features within the facility include flexible arena seating which is designed to accommodate 3,300 or retract for up to 5,000 portable seats during special events. the 45,000 gsf two-story recreation center contains an open atrium that is designed around a central climbing wall. Free weights, fitness equipment, and a three-lane fitness track area are all contained in an open, airy atmosphere while environmental graphics result in a unique sense of place. the 11,000 gsf student book store has been designed as a food service, retail book and product destination with adjustable shelving, displays and lighting systems.
Each of the program elements has been positioned along a naturally-lit central circulation spine called the “commons” which directly links the student housing zone with the central academic campus. the new buildings are also connected to the existing campus through a common language of materials, using red brick to fit within the existing context. Other contemporary details and materials slipped within the masonry walls help create a more progressive character by balancing past tradition with new technique.

While designed as an addition to the butcher Athletic center, the Wellness center is an independent, multi-functional facility with an identity of its own.
three key elements provide a well-balanced recreation program: the fitness zone, a new pool, and a multi-functional gymnasium. viewable as a rotunda balcony, the fitness zone is located on the second level with visual access to all amenities in the structure as well as the campus beyond.
Also viewable from the rotunda, the gymnasium accommodates a wide variety of recreation programs such as basketball, volleyball and badminton. the gym also provides open space for large functions like career days and dances.
the swimming pool offers recreation, competition and instructional aquatic programs. the center’s locker rooms include unique changing areas, offering a more private atmosphere than traditional locker room layouts.

Hughes Group’s design transforms the 1970s vintage facility into a contemporary student recreation center. this is a visionary facility with a vitality consistent with the mission and vision of the recreation Program.
the urban design responds to the adjacency of memorial Stadium and a major student housing complex across Peabody Drive. Our design integrates itself into the campus fabric with an exterior colonnade and landscaped plaza that spans the length of the facility. the colonnade and plaza enhance accessibility and humanize the scale of this massive facility while providing bus shelters, bike storage and visual access to all of the activities the center offers.
the “Winter Garden,” a sun filled atrium, provides an exhilarating entrance experience with views into all of the major recreation zones. the Winter Garden and fitness spine consolidate and clarify the new circulation pattern, unifying over 340,000 gsf on four levels. the existing facility now flows seamlessly into the expansion. large floor openings have been designed to allow natural light to penetrate to the lowest levels of the building.

the Wilson Aquatic center is the District’s premiere aquatic venue. the program includes a 50 meter competition pool, leisure pool and support functions. this urban design deftly addresses its context. the massive structure reflects the historic character of the adjacent Wilson High School and the surrounding residential neighborhood. the exquisite proportions, details and choice of materials create a structure that looks as though it has always been there. the interior environment reflects the exterior character with arched windows resulting in a memorable space for aquatic activity. Environmental sustainability was a cornerstone of the design and it has achieved lEED Silver certification. unique to this project is how it leveraged the adjacent forested urban wetland to provide natural ventilation for the structure. the design features natural day lighting of the interior environment as well as photovoltaic array that provides 13% of the building’s energy consumption.
