TO CURE DIPHTHERIA,

AHIniplo licmcily Wlilrh In Hnlil toHo KfTectlvc.

Several papcr9 of Paris have pub-lished that Dr. Lnutrardicrro of Tou-louse had, at different times, experimented with success with a newtreatment of sure efficiency for theeuro of that terrible disease, thecroup. The new treatment consists

the use of sulphur. Dr. Laugar-dierr- c

narrates thus his first experi-ment ;

"I called for some sulphur pow-

der; took a tablespoonful of (twhich I diluted In a glass of water, ordering to drink one teaspoonfulof the mixture every hour, shaking

before using. Next day the childwas better. New potion for thenext day. The following day thechild was cured. The only thingleft was a loose cough which 1 attri-buted to the false membranes circu-lating in the tracheal artery. Asking the parents to save them for mein case the child should expectoratethem, two days after a sudden fit ofcoughing expelled them, and threedried-u- p pieces the size of a largebean were brought to me."

After that cure the doctor obtain-ed several others, but none moreconvincing than the following:

"A little girl was dying; neithercry nor the least sound could comefrom her larynx; the pimples ofdiphtheria were on her- - cars, neck, head and cheeks; her wheezingbreathing could be heard at twentymetres off.

"The doctor had secured a tubeto insulllate nitrate of silver into thelarynx. The parents opposed that, but consented to make the childswallow the sulphurated potion dur-ing the night.

"On the next day the child which1 had considered as lost, was resus-citated the voice was restored, thepotion was continued during theday, and the next the child wascured."

The communication ol Dr. Lau-gardier- rc

is of too much importanceto not be the subject of a seriousand immediate examination, and itis for the Academy of Medicine toorder such.

Ruiincr.

There was an obvious improve-ment in the attendance at Saturday'sbaseball match, the last of the inter-national series, as compared withseveral previous games. A largoproportion of the speetators were onhand an hour before the hall game,to see the series of sports that wereadvertised. Some of tlio enteredcontestants were, however, not fell-ing in' condition and only two of theevents came off.

Luahiwa, Rcilly, Cat tor and Sharpthrew the ball three UiaN each.Reilly, of the California nine, .wasthe winner, throwing 314 feel. J.O Carter, jr., and Luahiwa, of theHawaiian League, made the nextbest throws.

The hundred yards' running racewas easily won hy J. L. Torheit ofHonolulu, in 11 seconds. He wasable to look at his opponent, Faireltof California, over ma shouluer inthe finishing quarter.

The St. Louis College band play-ed a number of selections in thehour preceding the game. Thfirplaying was excellent and the kind-ness of the faculty in granting thefree use of the band is worthy ol pub-lic gratitude.

THE BALL GAME.

A "dark horse" entered the pitch-er's box for the NewLIawaiis, in theperson of Mehcula, of the Kamchameha Juniors. lie gave good pro-mise of being a coming terror in theHawaiian League, as the Califoiniasonly got three baso hits in six innings, while two strikes were-calle-

on them frequently. His inexpe-rience told against him m the sev-

enth inning, when a decision thathe had balked seemed to break himup altogether; but fortunatelythat inning does not count, as rainstopped the game before any of theCalifornias were out. The wet ballalso is responsible for the total col-

lapse of the Ilawaiis' game iu thatinning.

1. New Ilawaiis to bat. Pr3'ceand Lawelawe, good batters both, failed to hit Uahill's delivery, andKaraakuuahoa (Dan) went the sameway after Mahuka had made a cleanbase hit. 0.

Creamer made a base hit, stolesecond, to third ou passed bail, andmade tho first run on Leveque's outat first from Luahiwa. Ward drop-ped a fly to Pahau. Cahill hit asingle, but had a close call from asplendid throw by Carter. He wasforced out at second on Farrell'shit. 1.
