EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

548 gynaecologists were interviewed in Mumbai and Thane. The following responses were obtained. Q.1. Doctor, in your practice what age group patient you see

very often?

o 51% of the responses of Gynaecologists suggested that the patients they see very often belong to the age group 25-40 years.

o 31% of the responses of Gynaecologists suggested that the patients they see very often belong to the age group 16-25 years.

o 12% of the responses of Gynaecologists suggested that the patients they see very often are of the age group Above 40 years.

o 6% of the responses of Gynaecologists suggested that the patients they see very often are of the age group Below 16 years.

Q.2. Out of 10 women you see, how many are pregnant?

o 27% of the Gynaecologist said that out of every 10 women they see 5 are pregnant.

o 17% of the Gynaecologist said that out of every 10 women they see 4 are pregnant.

o 17% of the Gynaecologist said that out of every 10 women they see

6 are pregnant.

Research Objective

The objective of our survey was to understand the perception about of Gynaecologists in Mumbai.

Research Methodology

A structured questionnaire consisting of closed and open ended questions was designed to gather information. This data was recorded, analysed and interpreted within the scope of the given objectives.

Mumbai was divided into 5 zones for this survey.

The 6 Zones included - 1. Central Mumbai 2. Western Suburbs 3. Eastern Suburbs

4. South Mumbai 5. Thane District 6. Navi Mumbai

The zones consisted of the following areas.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Majority (82%) of gynaecologist get patients mostly in the reproductive age group.

2. Among the total women visiting gynaecolost 40-60% visits them for pregnancy. Thus, women are visiting gynaecologist for other conditions beside pregnancy too.

3. 43% of gynaecologists prescribe folic acid during the first trimester. Thus, indicating the importance of folic acid in the first trimester of pregnancy. Also if needed, gynaecologist prescribe anti-emetics to pregnant mother for morning sickness during the first trimester.

4. The top companies which visited gynaecologists in Mumbai were found to be Emcure, Cipla, Lupin, GSK and German remedies.

5. The frequency of visit of MR to gynaecologist ranges from twice a week to once a month. Also when asked to recall the name of the MR and his company; 59% gynaecologist could not recollect the name of MR or their company.

6. Gynaecoloigsts rated Emcure, Lupin, Cipla, German Remedies and GSK in Greater Mumbai for the best gynaec product basket.

7. 24% of Gynaecologists said that they prescribe Orofer XT. The other products which gynaecologists prescribed were Autrin, Levogen XT, Fefol and Ferium.

The main reason for gynaecologists prescribing their selected brand of haematinic was found to be cost effectiveness of the medicine. The other reasons were found to be faster increase in haemoglobin content, lesser side effects, good absorption in the body and good patient compatibility.

8. While 100% Gynecologists rated folic acid most important, a majority of Gynecologists also rated calcium and iron as most important for expecting mothers.

9. Majority of Gynaecologists recommended expecting mothers a diet rich in proteins, green leafy vegetables, a balanced diet, fruits, fruit juices, milk, milk products and a diet rich in calcium.

10. Among the 548 doctors interviewed, more than 50% doctors see two to four cervical cancer patients in a year. It could indicate scope for more awareness among the Mumbai population regarding the disease. 70% gynaecologist said they recommend Gardacil as well as Cervarix for cervical cancer as a preventive measure.
