Meet the StaffEd & Claudia Kretschmer – a husband and wife team, are the founders and directors of Gym America. They are head coaches of the competitive team. Both Claudia and Ed were competitive athletes at the University of Florida where Claudia competed on the women’s gymnastics team and Ed on the track team. Ed was a pole-vaulter and decathlete. Claudia was honored by USA Gymnastics to receive the USA National Instructor of the Year Award in 2003 and 2005 and was recently honored by receiving Contributor of the Year award for Region 5. Claudia has authored the Prep-Optional Program which has now been adopted by Region5. Both Ed and Claudia are strong believers in maintaining a high level of coaches’ education and developing a good team through discipline, consistency and positive motivation. Claudia and Ed live in Saline and have two sons, Kevin who will be attending Graduate school and Kyle a 11h grader.Brian Zook - Brian has been coaching gymnastics for over 30 years. He competed for WMU and earned his teaching degree in Physical Education. Brian is the former owner of Great Lakes Gymnastics in Lansing Michigan. He has produced many National Level competitors, and state and regional champions. He has served on the Michigan USAG State Board and has served as a clinician for the State and Region. Brian was awarded “Compulsory Coach of the Year” in 2009. Brian is a full-time coach at Gym America. He is the director of the Gym America on Wheels Program, and he works with all levels of the competitive team. Brian also assists Claudia in teaching the PDCP Professional Certification Program for USA Gymnastics. Brian and his wife Autumn live in Saline and they have two children McKenzie 12 and Carter 9.

Sarah Osburn – has been coaching at Gym America for twenty two years. She is an excellent coach with many years of experience with both optionals and compulsories. Sarah is a lawyer in her day job and is the City Attorney for Adrian. Sarah truly loves the sport of gymnastics; she is a great choreographer and works with all levels of the competitive team. She is a positive force at Gym America. Sarah is married to Brian and has two children Brock and Morgan. Sarah was the first coach in the country to score 100% on her GymCert certification exam!

Stephanie Harrigan – is a Gym America graduate. Steph was a level 10 National competitor and started at Gym America when she was 3 years old. She competed at every level and truly “knows the ropes”. Stephanie graduated from UCLA where she was team captain for 3 years. This is Steph’s tenth year coaching at Gym America. Steph also has her level 5/6 judges certification. Steph and her husband Geoff live in Ann Arbor and have one year old son, Drew.

Liz Paddock – is a former level 9 gymnast. She graduated 7th in her class from Central Michigan University. Liz has been coaching the TOPS program for the past 5 years. University of Michigan in 2006. Liz is married and a stay at home mom with her 1 year-old twin sons, Matthew and Caleb.

Ann Walker - has been coaching for 14 years. Ann has coached levels 5 thru 8. Ann was a competitive gymnast at GTC and graduated from University of Michigan in 2003. This is Ann’s sixth year coaching the level 5 team at Gym America. Ann has the ability to see each child’s strengths and is a positive force in our compulsory program.

Emily Bartley - A former gymnast (though you might still catch her in a leo once in a while), Emily was bitten by the "gymnastics bug" at age 8 and has never been able the walk away. She began coaching at age 14 at her home club and over the years has coached and/or done choreography for various clubs, community organizations, high schools teams, and even a sleep away summer camp. She has been with Gym America for 7 years. In her non-gymnastics life, Emily is married, and works as a clinical pharmacist for the Veterans Affairs hospital in Ann Arbor. Emily is coaching the Prep-Optional Team.

Kim Cunningham has been involved in the gymnastics world for 20 plus years through competing, judging, or coaching. She competed for her high school team in Pipestone, Minnesota and then tried her hand at judging while getting her B.S. in Psychology and Special Education Minor at Mankato State University. Kim has coached preschool, recreational, and team gymnastics up to level 9 and has produced several state champions both individual and team. With that said however, her main achievement she feels is the fact that she has taught good gymnastics in a very positive manner. The important life lessons that are being taught to the young athletes are her main focus: Never say, “I can’t” and always say, “I’ll try” is her mantra. Kim says that the day she knew she was a successful coach was the day she looked at her coaching staff in a meeting and realized that the room was filled with her past athletes.

Amy Mell is a former competitive gymnast and diver. She has been coaching gymnastics for 10 years. This is her third year coaching at Gym America. In college, Amy was a diver on the Swimming and Diving Team at Virginia Tech. She received her undergraduate degree in engineering from Virginia Tech and her masters in Public Health from The University of Michigan. She currently works at Thomson Reuters. Amy will be working with the Level 4 & 5 team.

Team Handbook 11-12Tuition: Team fees are based on a yearly rate and are divided into twelve monthly payments. All holidays & gym closings have been accounted for. All team members are responsible for paying the entire yearly tuition. No make-ups or credits will be given for illness, injury, camps or vacation. When a gymnast is invited to move to a higher level, the parents will be responsible for paying the higher-level fees. All families are required to have a credit card or debit card on file. You may choose to auto debit each month or if payment is not made by the 5th of the month then your card will be charged. No late fee will be charged. Any account that is over 30 days past due will automatically go to collections and interest rates will be charged. There is a family discount of $15 per month for the 2nd child on the competitive team. There is a family discount of $10 per month if one child is on the competitive team and a second child is on the pre-team. VISA & Master-Card are accepted! There is a $5 fee for charging over the phone. All checks are payable to Gym America. If a child leaves the program she is responsible for the entire months tuition.

Gymnasts that have over due accounts may not participate in any “extra” activities such as camps, clinics, private lessons, TOPS, dance classes or judging clinics. Money used for these activities can be put towards paying tuition or Star dues.

Annual Dues: All team members must be registered annually with USA Gymnastics. Each gymnast will receive USAG insurance, covering them for all USAG sanctioned meets, and a subscription to USA Gymnast magazine. Additionally, there is a yearly Gym America registration fee. Both fees come due in August. If a gymnast joins the team mid season they must pay the entire fee.

Leotards & Warm-ups: All team members are required to purchase a team leotard, warm-up leotard, team bag and warm-up suit. Each year we have a leotard & warm-up exchange so families can save money by purchasing a used leotard or warm-up. Exchange and sizing takes place in September and a 50% deposit is due on new items at that time.

Optional Routines: For those gymnasts competing in the optional levels, the cost for a floor routine ranges from $75 to $200 depending on the choreographer. The cost for a beam routine ranges from $50-$100. Music cost is $75 to $150. You must set up an appointment with Claudia or Sarah for choreography and payment in full is due at that time.

Communication: Team notes, practice schedules, updates, etc.. will be sent by email. All meet information will be put in gymnasts’ mailboxes and also sent via email. The acquisition and upkeep of equipment is critical for the competitive program.

Each gymnast is responsible for paying $1300.00 into the general fund. The discounted rate for additional family members is $800. You may pay cash or fundraise this money. If payment is not made, the gymnast will not be allowed to compete in the next competition. Payments will be broken up into four installments: August 1st, Sept 1st, October 1st, November 1st. 2) Personal Accounts: The General Fund includes personal sub-accounts for each gymnast. You may use this sub-account to pay your general fund payment, team camp, or team uniforms. You may not receive cash from this account for any reason. If you discontinue gymnastics at Gym America, money from this account will remain with the General Fund.

3) Fundraising: We will have continuous fund-raisers set up during the year. No one is obligated to fund-raise. However, if you are motivated, fundraising will benefit you directly. 80% of the profit from each fund-raiser will go into your personal account and 20% to the general fund.

Meets We HostWolverine Classic and Girl Power Invitational It is imperative that we have 100% cooperation from our team members and parents.

Gym America will co-host two meets this season. Atlantis Crown in the Bahamas and the Xcel Regional Invitational. This will be held May 18-20 at EMU.

Every family is required to work either a set-up or take-down. Beyond that, the number of sessions required for each family will be figured out by the number of families and the number of jobs.

Approximately - 4-5 sessions plus set up or take-down - Wolverine Classic2 sessions at Girl Power.

Every family will be required to work. Mark the entire weekend (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) on your calendar. Any family that does not work will not have their meet fees paid for the remainder of the season.

Parent & Gymnast ResponsibilitiesParent Responsibilities:• Give lots of verbal encouragement especially during the inevitable plateaus encountered

in skill development.

• Attend the meets. Your support is helpful.

• Encouragement is essential, but please refrain from pressuring your child to “outperform” anyone else or attempt skills, which may be beyond her present physical ability. Resist the temptation to offer special incentives to help your daughter get a “trick”. Bribery is counter-productive. Leave coaching to the coaches.

• We ask that you Trust the professionalism and knowledge of the coaching staff to make the best and safest decision for the competition level of your child. We want your child to be successful. Success is not measured by the number of the level your daughter competes. We look at the BIG picture. Gymnasts progress at different rates. Your daughter may move up faster or slower than her friends. It is your role as a parent to help your daughter through these stages. Pressuring the coaches to move up your child up to the next level is not helpful to the child.

• Seek medical advice and therapy when necessary.

• Parents are welcome to watch practices, however, we ask that you stay in the lobby and that you do not come out into the gym area. PLEASE leave coaching to the coaches.

• Observe proper meet etiquette.o No talking to the judges.o Parents must stay out of the competitive area.o Parents should sit together and show support by cheering all Gym America

gymnasts. Gymnasts are not allowed to leave the competitive area. o Please help them to stay focused by not distracting them between events.o Be courteous to the meet host and other teams.o Parents may not have personal conferences after a meet. If you would like a

conference please email Claudia to set one up. We are happy to talk to you when we are not tired from a day of competing.

o Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated on our team.

• Help your child to follow proper nutritional guidelines.

Page 10: Gymnastics Today. Character for Life. - Team Handbook 11.12.pdfTeam Handbook! 2011-2012 Season 32 Year Anniversary 1979-2011 Claudia & Ed Kretschmer Directors email: coachcak@mac.com

• Be on time. Gymnasts should arrive on time to practice and be picked up promptly.• If your child is having any health issues, please let the coaches know.• Whenever you have questions or problems, please call the office, or email Claudia or Ed.

We want to help in any way we can. Please respect our coaching time as we cannot come off the floor to answer questions.

Note: Social Networking guidelines for gymnasts and parents: Negative comments about teammates, coaches, parents, Gym America, competitors or other gyms are prohibited. Violation of this rule would mean immediate dismissal from the team.

Gymnast Responsibilities:• Set realistic goals.

• Work hard to achieve your goals.

• Realize that you will have to sacrifice time from other activities.

• Plan on competing in every scheduled meet

• Be on time to workouts and meets.

• Work hard to improve your flexibility and strength. This means doing extra flexibility at home!

• Remember the team motto: STAR - Strength, Teamwork, Attitude and Respect!

Gymnast Guidelines:• Attendance is very important to your progress. If you are going to miss a practice it is

your responsibility to call and let the coaches know.

• Be on time. Be dressed and ready to go when practice starts. It is mandatory that parents pick you up on time after practice.

• No one may go on the equipment before practice starts. Gymnasts may work on their Personal Assignments and goal setting during this time.

• If you are late to practice you must do the assigned warm-up.

• If you need to leave an event for any reason you must ask your coach first.

• Any injury that requires you to miss practice time must be reported to a coach and entered in the accident report book located in the staff lounge.

• Phone calls during practice are for emergencies only. It is recommended that cell phones not be brought to practice. Office phones are always available to use.

Page 11: Gymnastics Today. Character for Life. - Team Handbook 11.12.pdfTeam Handbook! 2011-2012 Season 32 Year Anniversary 1979-2011 Claudia & Ed Kretschmer Directors email: coachcak@mac.com

• Gymnasts must be respectful to coaches and teammates. No back-talking, eye rolling, arguing or being disrespectful in any manner Gymnasts acting disrespectfully will be asked to leave practice and a parent conference will be held.

• When a coach is talking to you, you must stop, look and listen.

• Gymnasts are responsible to fuel their bodies properly. No candy or pop. Eat properly before practice. Do not skip meals. Girls are allowed to bring nutritious power snacks to practices and meets.

• Gymnasts may only bring water to practice. No sport drinks or any other drinks are allowed. It is recommended that the girls drink chocolate milk immediately after practice or have good recovery snack available.

• No large bags are allowed on the floor. Grip bags only. Everything else must be kept upstairs in the lockers.

• The locker area must be kept clean. No locks are allowed on the lockers.

• Tuesday is team tank day. T.E.A.M. (let’s work together! Attitudes are contagious!) Prep-Opt’s and level 5’s team tank day is Wednesday!

• All team members should be polite and well-mannered during practice, clinics, and meets.

• For safety reasons, body piercings are not allowed during practice or competitions. Only stud earrings are allowed in the ear lobe. No body piercing (belly button rings etc…), nose, tongue, or multiple earrings will be allowed.

• Rubber bracelets may not be worn during practice.

• Communicate! If you have a problem please let a coach know. We are here to help you in any way we can.

Travel Guidelines:• Traveling to a meet is a team event. When air travel is necessary, all team members

should travel together if possible. All gymnasts are required to wear their team warm-ups or Gym America outfit when flying to a meet.

• All gymnasts should stay at the same hotel. There are many reasons for this. Away meets are a team experience. First priority is the competition. When staying at the same hotel, the coaches can have team meetings, or stretch time with the gymnasts. This also builds more team unity with the gymnasts and parents.

• Whenever possible we like to combine a learning experience with competition. We like to plan an event together: sight seeing, dinner, etc. Level reps will plan a team activity for all away meets. All team members will be required to participate. Parents and siblings are always invited and encouraged to join in.

• Gymnasts should show team support by watching our other levels compete.

Page 12: Gymnastics Today. Character for Life. - Team Handbook 11.12.pdfTeam Handbook! 2011-2012 Season 32 Year Anniversary 1979-2011 Claudia & Ed Kretschmer Directors email: coachcak@mac.com

• The most important night of sleep is two days prior to competition. Make sure you are in bed on time! Curfew for away meets is 9:30 p.m. unless told otherwise. This means lights out and in bed.

• Gymnasts should follow good nutritional guidelines. I would prefer these rules be followed for a week before competition, however there is “reality” so do your best. No pop, fried foods or candy. From Thursday until after the meet please follow these guidelines:

1. Drink lots of water.2. No pop, ice cream, candy or fried foods.3. Eat a well balanced diet.4. NO swimming the day of competition. You may swim for no more than

30 minutes the day before. After competition – go for it!5. NO cell phones on the competition floor.6. When traveling to camps or other activities cell phones are not

allowed.

• Know all of the following meet rules and regulations:o Gymnasts should arrive at meets 30 minutes prior to the posted stretch time.

Hair should be up and ready at that time. Gymnasts are required to wear their hair in a bun. You may wear a ponytail if it is 3” or less.

o Do not wear white underwear. Please wear trunks the same color as your leotard. No thongs or string bikinis.

o You must bring your copy of your optional music to every meet.o No belly button rings.o You are not allowed to leave the competitive area without the coach’s

permissiono Eat a healthy meal before your competition. Do not go to the meet on an

empty stomach. You must have fuel in your tank!o Only CLEAR nail polish is allowed.o Only stud earrings are allowed.o Have EVERYTHING that you need for the competition

A Reminder Check list Competition leotard Team tank Proper underwear and bra Team warm-up Team bag Jump rope Slip on sandals are required! Hair accessories – spray, gel, clips, Bobbie pins, hair-net, etc. Matching scrunchie Grips, wristbands USAG card If needed – wrist guards, knee straps, ankle, heel cups etc… A Good Attitude! This is the most important item to bring!

•Communicate! Please let the coaches know if you have any questions, injuries or other problems.

Page 13: Gymnastics Today. Character for Life. - Team Handbook 11.12.pdfTeam Handbook! 2011-2012 Season 32 Year Anniversary 1979-2011 Claudia & Ed Kretschmer Directors email: coachcak@mac.com

•Gymnasts and parents are representing Gym America. Always be polite and well mannered. If you like the competition, it’s O.K. to say thank-you to the meet director. We all know how much work goes into running a good meet.

Attendance Policy:Gymnasts are expected to attend every practice. It is quite simple: you cannot fulfill your potential and be competitive unless you go to practice. Only school related absences, illnesses or religious reasons are considered excused absences. Going to the TIGERS game is not an excused absence! Daily attendance is recorded. At the end of each month you will receive a notice with your attendance report. This is just to give you a guideline of how you are doing.

While it is not recommended we do allow levels 4-7 to do another sport or activity as long as it is on their “off” days and it does not interfere with more than 15% of their practices. It is not recommended that Levels 8 and up do an outside sport. Their “off” days are meant for rest. They need to rest their bodies and allow them to recover for the next workout. This becomes a safety issue. Therefore, levels 8,9 & 10 must make a serious commitment to their training.

Competition Policy:All compulsory gymnasts MUST be able to perform at practice all of the required skills in a level in order to compete at that level (No exceptions). All compulsory gymnasts will compete at the level they are best prepared for. Gymnasts will be given an opportunity to be judged in the gym before going to an invitational meet. Levels 5 & 6 must earn a competency score of 32.00 before competing in an invitational meet.

The coaching staff will decide when a gymnast can safely perform the skills.

Requirements to compete at level 9 and 10. Gymnasts must be ready mentally and physically to make the commitment necessary to compete at this level. Gymnasts may not participate in other sports. Gymnasts must attend EVERY practice and may not leave early for social reasons. The only excused absences may be illness, religious obligations or mandatory school functions. Level 9 & 10 gymnasts must attend every meet. In addition, L9 and L10 gymnasts must have 10.0 start values on Bars, Beam & Floor, and must be able to successfully perform a 9.7 or better start value on vault.

Qualifying scores to State Meets for the 2010-2011 season. Level 4 30.00 Level 5 30.00 – must compete in 2 SQM’s Level 6 30.00 – must compete in 1 SQM’ Prep-Opt must compete in 2 sanctioned meets Level 7 31.00 Level 8 31.00 (34.0 to Regionals) Level 9 32.00 (34.0 to Regionals) Level 10 32.00 (34.0 to Regionals)

Birthdays:It is a Gym America tradition to celebrate each gymnast’s special day. We will end practice a little early and sing happy birthday. The gymnast may bring treats for her teammates. Please do not bring cake or ice cream. Popsicles are a nice easy treat.

Big Sister/Little Sister:The big sister/little sister program was developed as a support system for the gymnasts. The big sister serves as a mentor and offers support, guidance and encouragement to their little sister.
