The conference will bring together a diverse assembly of foundationstaff and trustees, individual donors and global Southern activists tolearn about, discuss and debate social change grantmaking practices andexplore some of the most critical issues facing grassroots communitiesin Africa, Asia and Latin America today

Conference participants will have more than 40 sessions to choose from,on two main tracks:

■ Global Grantmaking Practice: International grantmakers and donors, both experienced and novice, will enjoy a range of useful workshops on grantmaking practice on topics suchas monitoring and evaluation, IRS regulations, disaster response, and grantee capacity-building.

■ Advancing Human Rights, Equity and Justice in a Climate-Constrained World: Global warming and other urgentenvironmental issues are already having a profound impacton communities throughout the world. Strategic global grantmakers are increasingly recognizing the need to understand the depth and breadth of the current environmental crisis, no matter the issues they may fund, from global health, to economic development, to women’s rights. The conference will feature a range of sessions that explore grantmaking in the context of climate change, natural resource depletion, and peak oil.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Conference participants will have more than 40 sessions to choose fromover the course of this three-day conference. Here is just a sampling ofsome of the plenary sessions, breakout workshops, networking oppor-tunities and special events to be offered.

For full details on the conference, including a complete schedule and featuredspeakers, please visit www.gwob.net.

Plenary SessionsClimate Change, Natural Resource Depletion and Peak Oil: Issuesand ImpactGlobal warming. Deforestation, species extinction and water depletion. The inevitable drying up of the planet’s limited oil supply. These and otherissues have converged rapidly in our time, creating what many are callinga “Triple Crisis.” What exactly are the dimensions of the crisis, and whatis at stake? The conference will open with an essential assessment of theenvironmental emergency our planet now faces. To assist in understand-ing the urgency of the crisis, we’ll hear from representatives of Pacific andArctic communities whose very existence is at immediate risk.

From Bali to the Base: Supporting Global, National and Local ActionThe recent international gathering in Bali sought to advance a globalcompact for addressing climate change, while the issue has emerged inthe political discourse at national, state and local levels in the US andelsewhere. This plenary will begin with an update on the status of glob-al climate change negotiations and the prospects for meaningful changegiven the upcoming US presidential and congressional elections. Thesession will then turn to a debate of some of the more controversialstrategies being promoted to address the crisis, such as payment forenvironmental services, biofuels, and “clean coal”.

Strategies for Systemic Change: Global Justice and a Path ForwardAn unprecedented crisis is upon us, and its dimensions are daunting. However, many believe we are poised to make extraordinary changes inthe ways we relate to the environment and to each other. The conferencewill conclude by framing a strategy for systemic change, one thatembraces a vision of justice, equity and human rights. The plenary willoffer specific strategies global grantmakers can utilize to propel thismost critical agenda forward.

Grantmaking Within the LegalConstraints of U.S. Foreign PolicyIn a growing number of globalhotspots, grantmakers must findpractical solutions to advance theirmissions while responsibly adheringto legal constraints. This session willdiscuss challenges and strategies forgrantmaking in such challengingplaces as Burma, Iraq and Palestine.

Making Monitoring andEvaluation Accessible forCommunity-Based OrganizationsThis session will highlight successfulstrategies several foundations haveemployed to find common groundwith small, community-basedorganizations on monitoring andevaluation, transforming monitor-ing and evaluation from anunpleasant, confounding burdento a tool for empowerment.

Encouraging Local ReliefCapacity in Areas ofHumanitarian CrisisWhere disaster strikes, armies ofwell-funded international NGOsdescend, including many with noprior experience in the affectedregion. At the same time, manyextremely capable local, on-the-ground organizations get over-looked by grantmakers wishing to respond. This workshop willexplore how funders can supportthe capacities of local, communi-ty-based organizations to respond

to and recover from natural disastersand humanitarian crises.

Funding Rural Groups in theGlobal South: Challenges andOpportunitiesTwo-thirds of world’s poorest peoplelive in rural areas, the majority ofwhom are women. This session willlook at the particular challenges andopportunities facing grantmakerswanting to fund rural populations inAfrica and elsewhere, and how suchfunding can contribute to the promo-tion of cultural identity, environmentalsustainability, bio-diversity and foodsovereignty.

Supporting Movement Building at the Intersection of Health and EnvironmentThe health of communities is inextri-cably linked to the health of theirenvironment, and yet health andenvironment are often addressed inseparate silos of grantmaking. Thisworkshop will explore how the inter-section of environment and healthprovides exciting grantmaking oppor-tunities to build movements, supporthealthy communities and ecosystems, and connect people at the grassroots, national and international levels.

An Introduction to Social Change PhilanthropyGrantmakers Without Borders andother organizations advocate for“social change philanthropy.” Whatexactly is meant by this phrase?

Is it about what you fund, how youfund it, or both? This workshop willfeature a discussion with several pio-neers in the effort to move interna-tional grantmakers from pure charityto funding that promotes justice, equityand human rights among the world’smost marginalized communities.

Cross-Border Grantmaking Basics:Expenditure Responsibility andEquivalency DeterminationThinking about making grants directlyto overseas groups? Private foundationswishing to make cross-border grantshave several options for ensuring thattheir funding goes to charitable pur-poses: expenditure responsibility andequivalency determination. This practi-cal session will offer hands-on trainingin these essential cross-border grant-making procedures.

Strengthening China’s GrassrootsMovement to Address ClimateChangeMost efforts to reduce greenhousegas emissions in China have focusedon top-down, governmental initiatives.Yet to be successful, these and otherinitiatives will have to be implementedat a grassroots, community-basedlevel. This session will allow partici-pants to learn about on-the-groundenvironmental efforts in China whileexploring obstacles and opportunitiesfor grantmaking to China.

Indigenous Approaches toCombating Climate ChangeIndigenous communities around theworld, particularly those of islandnations and the Arctic, have been amongthe first populations to be directlyaffected by climate change. How canthe global philanthropic communitybest assist these communities, andhow can we amplify their voices inthe North?

Changing the Climate: The Critical Role of WomenWhile the sense of urgency aroundthe human impacts of climate changeis now heightened, gender equalityhas largely been absent from the discourse. Yet women are extremelyvulnerable to swift environmentalchanges, and they are also the bestpositioned to help curb the impacts of climate change, given theirresponsibilities for family andcommunity well-being and manage-ment of resources. Come hear fromwomen activists about innovativestrategies for curbing climatechange and its impacts.

Small-Scale SustainableFarmers Can Cool Down the EarthIntercontinental food transport, intensive monoculture production, the destruction of natural habitat tomake room for cattle, and the use ofchemical inputs have transformedagriculture into a significant green-house gas emitter. This session willexplore how small-scale farmers are

building food sovereignty and coolingdown the planet.

Water Rights and Management:Community-Based Responses With climate change’s ever increasingimpact on the availability and qualityof water, local communities whodepend directly on natural resourcesare liable to feel a squeeze, with his-torical inequities and state deficien-cies in service delivery and disasterpreparedness becoming more andmore magnified each day. In this session, funders will learn from theexperience of community associationsaddressing water issues and promot-ing community-driven sustainabledevelopment.
