Thanks to Vice President Bill for holding the fort while I was away, supposedly travelling the Gun Barrel Highway with a group of fellow club members and friends. I only made it to Yalara (and even then on the back of a truck) with gearbox issues in the Nissan and limping in to Curtain Springs. Despite the best efforts of the mechanics at Yalara, the problem was too much to be fixed and the Nissan had an extended trip home on the back of another truck while we flew home. It was extremely disappointing after all of the planning that had gone into the trip and our expectations of a great trip with friends to see some different parts of the country. It was originally thought that water had somehow got into the gearbox, causing it to only have 1st & 2nd gear and it was not until we got the vehicle home and the gearbox was removed by Goulburn Valley Automatics that the real problem became evident. We had travelled for about 200km on a dirt road at the start of the Gun Barrel Highway near Victory Downs and recent rain had most of the track under water which made for some great driving – plenty of slipping and sliding and water spraying everywhere, but somewhere along this track the automatic transmission sump had been knocked up and blocked the inlet to the internal transmission filter. This totally destroyed the 3rd gear clutch assembly and lost all higher gears. Not the way we had intended to finish the trip but pleased that the rest of the group were able to continue and complete the trip. I had only recently renewed my RACV Total Care cover and cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone travelling around the country, probably saved me around $7K with truck transport, accommodation assistance and air fares and all for only $190. Good value in anyone’s books. The RACV people were excellent to deal with and made every effort to assist us to resolve the problem and to return us and the vehicle home. The July meeting will incorporate a special general meeting to be held prior to the normal general meeting to vote on a

recommendation from the executive committee which reads:- “The Club caps its numbers at 250 family memberships.

When this number is reached, it will establish a waiting list for prospective members.” The committee has considered the current membership numbers, around 227 at present, and proposing a ceiling on membership

numbers of 250. Each executive meeting, the committee generally receives 1-3 new membership applications for approval and given the size of our clubrooms and facilities, any more members than this at a meeting could be stretching our resources. With the changes to the CPS, there was consideration to a cap of 200 members, expecting an influx of people wanting to join the club for cheap registration. This didn’t happen but numbers have continued to climb and the committee feels that now is the time to place a limit on club membership. If the club numbers reach 250, a waiting list will be established and as a club vacancy becomes available, the person on the top of the list will be invited to join the club. Should this be approved by members, it will become part of our club by-laws.

Membership fees were discussed at the May committee meeting, and given the strong financial position of the club it is recommended that the membership fees for the 2017 club year should remain at $65. As is past practice this will be raised at the July meeting and membership fees will be able to be paid. It is essential that members with vehicle on the CPS have their membership paid by the AGM in November.

The clubrooms extensions are still a work in progress with the amended plan now back from the draftsman and will be discussed with the relevant committees.

The swap roster has been published so please check if your name appears on the roster and that you are available for the allocated time. If you are not on the list and are able to help, please contact Lloyd or Anne. The swap provides funding to assist with the operation of the club and we request that all members help to ease the workload for the organising committees.

With one Rally for 2017 being announced at the June meeting and as I understand it is now full, anyone who is thinking of organising another rally should make the announcement in the near future to enable other members who might still want to be involved in a rally to get their name on a list. It is evident that there are more people interested in being on a rally than can be accommodated on a single rally, and there have been up to three rallies organised in past years. Please think hard about whether you are able to run an additional rally and contact the executive committee. Assistance is available from previous organising committees to help with the planning process.

See you all at the July meeting. Lindsay Drust

The Swap Meet is only about 8 weeks away and sites are selling well. Updated rosters are in this Journal. Please check where and when you are rostered and make sure you’re there on time. If you can’t make it for any reason (or if you’re not in there and can help out) please contact the organisers as soon as possible. It’s the biggest day of the year for our club and the only one where every member is expected to do their bit.

The Club’s new website is now public. Details are on page 19 and any comments or suggestions would be welcome. See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone!

Brendan Walsh

Following recent discussions at General and Committee meetings regarding the numbers of new member applications, the Committee proposes to move a motion at the July General Meeting that:

The Club caps its numbers at 250 family memberships. When this number is reached, it will establish a waiting list for prospective members.

This matter will be discussed and a vote taken at this month’s meeting.

GO FAST, TURN LEFT by Ray Read and Dennis Myers

This book chronicles the history of the Goulburn Valley Auto Club, one of the oldest and most respected Speedway Clubs in Victoria. “Go Fast, Turn Left” has been over two years in the making, and has seen more than 250 hours of computer work, not to mention countless hours of painstaking research. The book is 136 pages in full colour, printed on high quality paper by Shepparton’s Maxam Printing. It has over 350 pictures and 31,000 words. Initially the authors are printing a limited number of copies, which will be sold both at the track and also at various outlets around the area. Any profits from the sale of the book will go to the Goulburn Valley Auto Club.

The book is designed as a pictorial, and includes many historical photographs from a variety of photographers, back to the iconic B&W pictures of the 1960s. Running parallel with the club’s history, the book also describes the activities of various controlling bodies, affiliations and rule changes which had a profound impact on the direction and progress of the club. Along the way, there are many anecdotes relating to the GVAC and its people. Also included are lists of Past Presidents, Life Members, “Hall of Fame” recipients, and “Legends.”

You can buy it locally for $40 at Super Balance in Lockwood Rd, or it is available for $52.00 (Aust. postage included) from http://www.speedwayfirst.com/#!GO%20FAST,%20TURN%20LEFT/c24cy

Now in its 23rd year, the exhibition features 45 works from a variety of artists and features a number of diverse subjects. There is the usual smattering of works depicting our politicians, with an array of sporting luminaries also being the subject of the satirical swipe of the artist’s brush. The winner of the $10,000 prize will be announced in Sydney on 22nd July.

Are you considering running a touring rally next year? If so, bring your ideas to the July club meeting to get an idea of how many members would like to attend. You don’t need to have much detail sorted out yet, just a general route and where you might stay overnight. Accommodation is usually the factor that limits how many can attend – we normally have plenty of members that want to go! There may also be some other members that might want to help run your rally.

Hey, Hey it’s HAY 2016! It was with some trepidation that I approached this year’s pilgrimage to Hay for the 2016 Mini Nationals. My

big brother, Barry, was unable to attend due to a recent hip replacement, so I casually asked my wife, Anne, if she would like to go. She has shown no interest whatsoever in the past in attending events of this nature and to my surprise she said, “Yes, I’ll go.” This threw me into an immediate state of confusion because I wasn’t prepared for such a response. I was more expecting, “No, I don’t want to go, but you go if you like.” This put an entirely different complexion on proceedings indeed. She has expressed the opinion in the past that she would be “bored absolutely witless” if she had to hang around looking at old cars all day!

So on Saturday morning the 12th of June 2016 the two us loaded up the blue Mini, and headed off to Hay, leaving Shepparton at about 7.00am. I usually head up on the Friday afternoon, but due to part time work commitments and a real fear of hitting kangaroos in the dark, we left early in the Saturday morning. After a fuel top up at Deniliquin, we continued on to Hay, arriving about 10.30am, half an hour before the parade was due to start. At the assembly point we met up with Ron from Albury and three brothers, Brenton, Jarrad and Justin, from Cowra. I had met Justin and Jarrad last year, but this year was the first year that Brenton had come to Hay. Last year Jarrad, Justin and another brother Josh, came to Hay in one (1) mini. More, a lot more, about these young men later.

After the Street parade, which included Minis, Mokes, Vanguards, cars from the Hay car club and Beaut Utes, everyone parked in Moppett Street for the general car display, “show and shine” judging, and rocker cover racing.

Among the cars on display was a very unusual 1974 Austin 1300 Countryman. It is apparently one of only three in Australia and was imported from Hong Kong. It is currently for sale with an asking price of $9,500. If you are interested, phone Stuart on 0420-523238.

Ron Franks has been a regular attendee at Hay and this year he returned with his highly modified 1975 Leyland Panel Van. The vehicle has been extensively modified and updated and I would think that the amount of money spent on this vehicle would be in the tens of thousands. Ron has picked up a total of 28 awards

with this vehicle at various shows. He also has a 1970 Cooper S that has won 9 awards. He has owned the Cooper S for eight years, and will be attending the Bathurst event later this year with his “S” that is also red in colour with a white roof, to commemorate the Bathurst Mini win of 1966.

Parked right next to Ron in the side street was a Mini that had been fitted with two air horns that would be more appropriate on an ocean going tug, rather than any vehicle designed for road use. When the owner let them rip, everybody in the close vicinity literally jumped.

There were some very interesting engines on display and although I have read about the conversion to a BMW motor cycle head, giving the benefit of two overhead cams, I had never actually seen one until this year. It looked exceptionally neat, but I also think that you would need a lot of engineering skill to complete this conversion.

The other engine belongs to the Mini owned by Rod Shaw, who is a long time campaigner in Mini motor sport events, and a great ambassador for Minis in general. You can see that it has an oil cooler and a reasonably rare long branch “Russell” inlet manifold.

On the same weekend it is also the Vanguard nationals. This Vanguard ute was my favourite as it had a really aged patina with the dark green paintwork and the rear cover just added to the appeal.

This rig looked very unusual in the street parade, as it was actually towing the two trailers.

And, yes, there are plenty of BMW Minis in attendance as well. After the conclusion of the car display everyone headed back to their

accommodation to get ready for the trivia night at the local services club.

At this point I should expand on our three young friends from Cowra. If you are a parent and you are reading this, I would respectfully suggest that you take a seat because you are about to receive somewhat of a shock. These three fine young men, come from a family of, wait for it, twelve, yes that’s right it’s not a typing error, twelve, children! The names and ages are as follows: Brenton 29, Damien 28, Justin 26, Jarrad 25, Josh 21, Dominic 20, Breanna 18, Rochelle 17, Izaayah 15, Jazmyn 13, Elijah 10 and Ezekiel 8. That’s nine boys and three girls. And just to further put your head in a spin, their Mum, Ruth is only 52 and their dad Ricky, 55. The family home in Cowra is a double storey

100 year old residence with nine bedrooms. Last year the boys had to go home early from Hay because it was Mum’s birthday and they were told not to miss the occasion. And just to further amaze you, their Mum, Ruth, recently completed a teaching degree via distance learning and has taken up full time primary school teaching. Their Dad was a plasterer, but has now taken up a career as a personal car attendant, although it is called something else in N.S.W. I think the only appropriate word to describe this family is inspirational! And at the time of writing, there are still nine of the children living at home. All the boys are very keen, dare I say fanatical, Mini enthusiasts.

Their Dad had a Mini when he was very young and this interest has been passed on to the boys. Dad at the present time has a 1998 Rover spec Mini, imported from Japan, fitted with air conditioning. I didn’t ask what they actually use for a family vehicle, but it would have to be something like a bus. They also have the good fortune to have as a close family friend, Warwick, who has prepared and raced Minis for well over fifty years. Warwick apparently has a terrific garage and the only things he can’t do are engine balancing and crankshaft grinding.

Brenton, the eldest, is a secondary school teacher, and has in his possession a 1969 Moke (one of the very early Moke’s fitted with 13” wheels) which he drove to Hay, three Leyland GT’s and a Cooper S all in various stages of repair. The Moke is also his daily driver. He is also in the process of acquiring a Moke Californian from Coffs Harbour. Brenton still lives at home in Cowra. He also has accumulated numerous Mini parts including an ultra rare aluminium cross flow head for a Mini engine. He is also a member of the N.S.W. Fire and Rescue Service. As Cowra, with a population of about 10,000, is not large enough to have a full time urban fire brigade, they have a roster of part time members. He is paid a retainer to be on availability and then is paid if he is called out. He cannot be on availability when he is at school, but he usually is on call after hours and on weekends. At the present time he is the

deputy captain and has been with the service for 7½ years. During that time he has received extensive training in both fire fighting and road rescue.

This is Brenton’s Moke. He plans to keep it looking basically original. The roof was recently redone, but he has an issue with the front triangular panels flapping with the side “doors” that he hopes to cure with some clips that he has had specially made for the job. As indicated, it is his daily drive.

The blue Mini is Jarrad’s ’64, just in front of Justin’s ’74 Clubman. Justin completed a carpentry apprenticeship, and is now in the process of obtaining a teaching degree via distance learning. He is only recently married and has moved out of home. The photograph I saw of his family at the wedding was obviously taken with a wide angle lens, just to fit everyone in the frame. Justin has an ex-NSW Police Cooper S, a 1967 Cooper S, a 1970 Mini K and the ‘74 Mini Clubman that he drove to Hay. Jarrad has a ‘64 Mini “bitza”, and a ‘72 Clubman. He managed to purchase a very rusty Clubman for $300 that contained a 1275 engine and disc brakes. This was a real bargain as, according to Ron, any 1275 engine alone is worth at least $2,000 due to the fact they are becoming so rare.

The brothers are always on the lookout for Minis and Mini parts to buy and had many stories to tell of their travels in search of cars and parts. Justin related that about two years ago, he and Jarrad headed off in one of Jarrad’s Minis to Sydney to collect an engine, heads, and assorted Mini parts that Justin had purchased on E-bay. They knew that space would be tight so they took the back seat out of Jarrad’s Mini to make extra room. They got to Sydney, four hours drive away, loaded up and headed back home. On the return journey, Jarrad’s Mini started to run very rough and then finally stopped - dead - some distance out of Mittagong. Undeterred, they got a taxi back into Mittagong to buy a set of points and condenser for the Mini, as they suspected that the electronic ignition component of the distributor had died. As they didn’t want to pay the $40.00 for another taxi fare back to the car they decided to try their hand at hitch hiking. They obtained a piece of corflute and wrote on it “Broken down out of town, need a lift,” stood on the apron of a service station holding up their sign and waited for a lift. At that time they both had bushy beards and looked something like members of a modern day “Kelly Gang”, so other motorists were somewhat reluctant to help and consequently gave them both a wide berth. It looked like they were doomed to spend the rest of the day waiting for a ride, when a little old lady, bless her, asked them if she could help. The boys piled into her car and they headed off. The good Samaritan explained to the boys that her kids were always telling her not to pick up hitch hikers, but she said that she that liked to help people – what a saint! She even drove twenty minutes out of her way to drop the boys back at the broken down Mini. Then to make matters worse, while they were putting in new points, it started to pour rain. Jarrad was constantly apologising for not checking the car before they set off and for not packing a few spares for such a long trip. And then, after putting in the new points, the car still wouldn’t start. This time the boys suspected that the coil was to blame. Jarrad had to ring his wife, back near Cowra and get her to drive down some three hours drive, to bring down a spare coil. A farmer came down to check on them during their impromptu roadside stop and offered to tow their mini off the road into his farm, but the boys declined. So what would be usually a four hour trip, turned into a twelve hour marathon. Justin said that they could laugh about it now, but that they definitely weren’t laughing at the time. The moral of this story is to make sure you are in the RACV or the NRMA and have road-side assist.

At the trivia night they proved their worth and answered nearly all the hard questions. Our team, aptly named “the Cowra Crumbs”, placed about 13th in a field of 16, so at least we didn’t come last. At last year’s trivia, Ron came up with what I considered to be the answer of the night. The question was: “Where would you be if you were in a room with Judith Sheindlin?” Without hesitation Ron replied, “In bed making love to her!” The correct answer was a “court room” as Judith Sheindlin is “Judge Judy.” Not to be outdone, again this year, there were a series of musical questions that came up on the screen. One of the first lines was, “I was going so fast I thought I was drunk.” Quick as a flash Ron quipped, “I should know this one because I’ve been drunk a few times!”

The next morning it was out to the farm for the motorkhana events and Hay’s Heroes. You all will be familiar with the expression, “wandering around like Brown’s cows?” Well we came across “Brown’s cows” on the way to the motorkhana and it took a while to get through them. The entrance to the event, at the property “Willunga,” is hard to miss as there is a Mini perched on top of a pole, right at the entrance.

We caught up with Ron and the Cowra men, and watched the proceedings for a while. There was actually a late model Commodore participating in the events. Anyone can apparently enter, but it is the Minis and Mokes that are usually the quickest. The ground was reasonably wet, but it quickly dried out and by the end of the day the cars were actually raising dust, which is what you usually see at Hay. At the completion of the motorkhana rounds, “Hay’s Heroes” is run, where two competitors at a time run through

a straight line slalom course and return to the “garage”, then swap over and have a run in the opposite lane. The winner is the driver with the best average time over the two runs. It is straight elimination and the winner is eventually proclaimed in their respective classes. The images are from the 2012 event when there was plenty of dust. Ray Potts is on the left and Rod Shaw on the right. Both drivers were competing again this year, in the same Minis.

The young men from Cowra headed off on their long journey home before the end of the competition with the comment that they would all be back next year for the 50th Anniversary event. These young men are a real credit to both themselves and their parents. They don’t drink, smoke, or use bad language, have a very obvious respect for their parents, and they all have just the best senses of humour.

That Sunday night was the presentation night at the local hall. The fancy dress theme this year was camouflage. Ann and I went in our warm clothes, coats and hats and nobody recognised us, so I guess we were very well camouflaged! The results from the weekend will be published on the web site in due course.

I should add that Hay is a very historic town and if you have an interest in Australian history, I would recommend you visit the Hay POW museum situated at the beautifully restored Hay Railway Station (below), the Hay Gaol, and the “Shear Outback” display (right).

At the Railway Station we were lucky enough to meet a gentleman by the name of David Houston who has lived in the area for most of his life. David is in his early eighties and really is a walking, talking encyclopedia of the area. As a young boy, he vividly remembers when the Japanese prisoners rioted at the POW camp in 1945 and everyone in the town was warned to evacuate, as it was believed that the Japanese were about to stage a mass escape. Not David’s Dad! David remembers his Dad climbing up onto the chimney of their then home, with his .303 rifle, .22 rifle and as much ammunition as he could carry. He also remembers his Mum coming out and saying on several occasions, “Don’t be silly Jack. Get down off the roof before you fall down and break your neck!”

Undeterred, his Dad stayed on the roof, saying that he would be able to shoot the Japs as they came up the street. Eventually the crisis passed and “Jack” came down off the roof, much to Mrs Houston’s relief!

Next year will be the 50th Anniversary of the event at Hay and I have no doubt that it will be a huge event. It is apparently the second longest running motorsport event in Australia. If you only manage to get to Hay once in your life time, especially if you have an interest in Minis, I would suggest that next year is definitely the year to attend.

During a petrol stop in Deniliquin I engaged in conversation with the owner of this ZD Fairlane. The car was purchased new by his late father around 1971 and recently restored over a three year period, to better than new condition.

After reading this, I bet you will all be wondering what my wife, Anne, thought of the weekend? Well she thoroughly enjoyed herself and said that she had met a lot of very interesting people and wouldn’t mind going again!

Rally Report

The major exhibit for this year’s Rally was a fully restored 18 pounder cannon used by the 1st Division Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) at Gallipoli on 19

May 1915. This QF 18 Pounder is drawn by 6 horses and also includes an ammunition carriage called the

Limber which was exhibited for the first time in Victoria at the Rally. It was restored by the Royal

Australian Artillery Historical Company (RAAHC), a public company and a volunteer not-for-profit

organisation of members.

In 2016 the Ferguson Type A (Ferguson-Brown) is 80 years old, the TE-20 (Grey Fergy) is 70 years old and the

FE35 (Grey and Gold) is 60 years old. The Harry Ferguson Club has a lot to celebrate at this year’s

Echuca Steam Rally. The HFTC held its first AGM at Echuca Steam Rally in

1994 and has been involved with and attended all rallies since. They still hold their Annual Meeting on the

Saturday night of the Steam Rally at a venue in Echuca.

Queen’s Birthday Tour, Hamilton – 11th-13th June 2016 The weather forecast for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend looked reasonable – cold but minimal

rain, so we headed there for their 39th annual rally.

As usual, one of the destinations was an historic homestead – this time it was Arrandoovong, near Branxholme. It was built in the 1850s and is a two storey bluestone home in the Italianate style. Much of the home is original, with only the kitchen wing modernised. A very imposing home.

Sunday’s run was south to Portland to visit Keppel Prince, an engineering works where the massive wind turbine towers and blades are manufactured. Although nobody was actually working, we could see the various steps along the production line – it started with flat steel plate (about 40mm thick) which is rolled into circular tower sections about 3m high and 4.5m in diameter. Five of these sections are welded together before going through the biggest spray booth I’ve ever seen. You could fit two B-doubles in it!

The finished towers are 80m high and the blades are about half that long. Keppel Prince has manufactured hundreds of these towers for many sites around the country. The biggest wind farm in the southern hemisphere is at Macarthur (about 60km north of Portland) which has 140 wind turbines.

Single section with door cut-out. Weld is on the left side.

After having lunch in the Portland CBD, we split into two groups to visit the Maritime Discovery Centre and the Powerhouse Museum. The Powerhouse Museum has a wide variety of exhibits, including veteran, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles, push bikes, petrol bowsers and even a 1920s cable tram. The museum has been extended in recent years (although it is not as big as the Shepp Museum) and it is chock full of motoring-related displays. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

On Sunday everyone gathered at the Car Clubrooms, which is in the grounds of the Hamilton Pastoral Museum, for a farewell brunch. There was also a walking tour of the older section of Hamilton to learn a bit about some of the historic homes there. Very interesting.

Overall it was another great rally with something of interest for everyone.

Late last year, the Committee arranged for the basic shell of a new Club website to be created by a specialist. A Club member was then to visit that person to learn how to use the software to maintain and update the website. This tutoring session went well and I started modifying and adding to the original website to get it to how I thought it should look. Our website is now ready to take over from the previous version that has been maintained by Phil for quite a few years. Thanks for all your good work Phil. The new site address is www.gvmvdc.com.au

The home page has a rolling string of photos of our trophy-winning vehicles for the last few years. There are links to the AOMC and Federation sites as well as to the page on the VicRoads website explaining the Club Permit Scheme.

The pull-down menus are located across the top of the page. They appear when you hover your mouse over the heading. Most are fairly self-explanatory – Buy and Sell this links to the “for sale / wanted” page of the Journal Photos of Members Vehicles I’ve included about 300 photos of current members’ vehicles! Drivers Calendar this links to the “coming up” and “calendar” pages of the Journal Rally of the Valley I’ve included general details and the Journal reports from some past rallies Annual Rallies I’ve included basic details of the 35 rallies that we’ve had so far.

Some reports could be added in the future. Members Log On this links to the part of the website that requires a password.

Members will be advised of this password, which will change regularly. The Drivers Journal can be accessed through this menu.

Obviously a website is constantly changing and I’ll be adding more detail in the future. If there’s anything you want added (or maybe removed), contact me.

Any comments or suggestions would be welcome!
