This funding will be used to purchase new planting for the park, create some new footpaths, and landscape around the new car park as well as creating a new orchard on the park to encourage wildlife. Portfolio Holder for the Park Councillor Miss Eileen Martin said, “I am thrilled that we have managed to secure more funding for the park following our successes in securing the £1.1 million, together with Ferryhill Town Youth for the new Sports facility in the park, as well as the £70,000 we got for new play equipment. “The staff who get these grants for the people of Ferryhill are unbelievable.” The Friends of Dean Bank Park are working in close partnership with the Town Council to assist in the re- generation of the park and are themselves pursuing grants including a grant of £50,000 for a much requested multi-use games area. However they were disap- pointed to learn that a local resident had recently lodged an objection to this project which was causing considerable delays. The Friends secretary Steven King said, “The Friends group is delighted with the progress in the park to date but is equally disappointed that one local resident seems intent upon scuppering the communi- ties plans to regenerate the park”. The Town Council agreed at its recent meeting to progress with the provision of a temporary dog walking area on some 14 of the currently 33 vacant plots on the storehouse allotment site. This will ensure that dogs are not exercised on the new football pitches and in areas where children play. There have been a number of problems in the park caused by the minority of irresponsible dog owners who do not clear up after their dogs and let them run in amongst children causing parents some concern. The Council also agreed to spend up to £1500 tidying up the neglected allotments to be used for the dog walking area which will be brought into use as soon as possible. Further grant applications will be submitted by the Friends group and the Town Council to complete the regeneration of the park in line with local residents’ requests. There has in fact only been one year since the end of World War II where no soldier, sailor or airman from our armed services has lost their lives. And so the desire to pay tribute, to remember and to pray for peace has not diminished. This is the one occasion each year when members of the public can show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by its past and present service personnel and so all residents of Ferryhill are invited to attend the Remembrance Sunday Ceremony, to be held at St Luke’s Church from 9.30am on Sunday 14th November, and afterward at the war memorial in the Town Hall gardens. If any groups, clubs or societies not presently involved in the Remem- brance Day Parade at Ferryhill wish to take part they should contact John Rogerson on 01740 652157 as soon as possible. A crackdown on illegal bonfires in the run-up to November 5th has been launched in the area. The two-week campaign aims to reduce the number of unnecessary call-outs to the fire and rescue service.Members of the public will be warned of the dangers of unauthorised bonfires on public land and encouraged not to supply materials that could be used for burning. They will also be asked to report any illegal woodpiles so they can be dismantled and removed before being set alight. The initiative is being organised by Durham County Council and Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service through the Safe Durham Partnership.Oliver Sherratt, Durham County Council’s head of direct services and chair of the anti-social behaviour group of the Safe Durham Partnership, said, “As well as being a direct danger to the public, deliberate and nuisance fires are a drain on the fire service’s resources and can divert crews from potentially life-threatening work elsewhere.“Their removal is also costly and time-consuming

for the council and, conse-quently, anyone suspected of building an illegal bonfire on public land could receive an £80 fixed penalty fine for fly-tipping.“We would, therefore urge residents not to encourage the building of unauthor-ised fires and to report any they see to the council.“Attending an organised event is a much safer way of celebrating November 5th for everyone.”Residents will be asked not to provide old furniture or waste materials to youngsters who call at their home, to ensure their wheeley bins are replaced

promptly after emptying so they can not be targeted and not to allow waste to build up outside their homes. The council’s neighbour-hood wardens will be working with police and firefighters to identify fires, which will be removed by the authority’s clean and green teams. They will also be visiting schools to talk about bonfire safety and delivering information leaflets to households in hot-spot areas. To report an illegal bonfire call Durham County Council on 0300 123 7070.

The public are being warned about the dangers of illegal bonfires.

On 4th October John Paul Flannagan of Victoria Gardens, Spennymoor, drove from Tyneside to attend a Social Services meeting in Ferryhill.A police officer smelt alcohol on him and on being breathalysed he was found to be over the legally-pre-

scribed limit for driving. The 31 year-old pleaded guilty at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court and the case was stood down for Probation Service reports, with steering to serving a twelve months supervision order, to include 100 hours unpaid work.

It’s that time of year again!

Miss Chilton (Courtney Nelson) and the Chilton Gala Princess (Phoebe Naylor) will be helping Mayor Margaret Walton to turn on the Christmas lights.

The areas of the Flanders and Picardy saw some of the most appalling fighting of World War 1. There was complete devastation. Where homes, farms and countryside had been, a sea of mud and carnage engulfed everything. One thing, however did survive each year, the warm weather brought up poppies. Their vibrant colour in the mud and desolation gave heart and hope to the soldiers fighting in the trenches: and so the poppy became a symbol of hope and reas-surance.The poppy became recognised as an important reminder of the war and in Britain and, under the guidance of Mayor George Howson MC, a small group of disabled servicemen started to make artificial poppies. So the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. All money raised by the appeal still goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and their wives and their dependants in times of need through the Royal British Legion’s Benevolent

Man intimidates teens into personal taxi serviceChristopher Andrew Simpson of Ferryhill has breached an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) for the 21st time, Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday 19th October. The 24 year-old from Newton Street was given the Asbo in April 2008 and the court heard how he admitted theft of £3 and intimidating two teenagers into driving him around. Jackie Gibson, prosecut-ing, told the court that Simpson asked two 17

year-olds in Shildon to give him a lift to the cemetery. They agreed, but upon arrival Simpson asked them to take him elsewhere. Ms Gibson said this continued a few more times causing increasing concern for the young men. Simpson also took £3 from a cupholder.Their ordeal came to end after Simpson went into a shop and they managed to drive away. Ms Gibson said Simpson had previous breaches of his Asbo for similarly intimi-

dating people into driving him around.Michael Clark, mitigating, said that Simpson’s record was “not good” but that there had been a “huge im-provement in his behaviour and attitude” recently and he was leading a different life now. He said his client was also taking medication to help curb his drug habits.Magistrates gave Simpson a 12 month community order with supervision and a 6 month drug rehabilitation order.

Man faces jail after attack on ex-wifeA man has accepted he faces jail after breaking his ex-wifes eye socket during an argument. Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates Court heard how Christopher Flatman from Rosewood, Chilton admitted malicious wounding and affray at his hearing on Monday 19th October. The court heard how the 30 year-old’s relationship with his wife had broken down and that Flatman had gone to collect their children for a weekend day out.Toby Thomas, prosecut-ing, said that Flatman then got into an argument with his wife and broke her

eye socket. Later on the same day he went to his wife’s sister’s home after consuming ten double vodkas and four pints of lager, where he made threats to her family. Mr Thomas added that both incidents had taken place in front of children.Leanne Galbraith said in mitigation that Flatman was disgusted and ashamed at his behaviour. She explained how Flatman had started arguing with his wife and pushed her to the sofa three times. After his wife had given him some mail he threw it back in her face at which point he punched her in the face,

fracturing her eye socket.Ms Galbraith continued to tell how Flatman then got himself drunk and went to his wife’s sisters house, where he admitted making threats. She said that neither con-frontation was planned and that he had only struck his wife once. She also said that her client knew he was facing “con-siderable” jail time and as such had declined to apply for bail as he did not want his wife to worry about where he was. Flatman was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Durham Crown Court on Monday 15th November.

Jason Charles Adamson will appear at Darlington Magistrates’ Court on 9th December after pleading not guilty to a charge of criminal damage at Newton Aycliffe.

Adamson, aged 39, of Rennie Street, Ferryhill, is alleged to have damaged a VW Golf on 5th September in Ferryhill. The defendant was released on uncondi-tional bail.

Sunday 17th October saw the dedication of the new Millennium Window at St Lukes Church in Ferryhill. At the service was Chris Wardale who was com-missioned to design the window as he had been a student of Professor Evetts - the designer of the churchs' East Window. The work was completed by Cate Watkinson of Newcastle. The initial concept was a window to celebrate the Millennium based on the examples of local saints Aidan and Bede. The final design has incorporated the names of Ebba and Nicholas, saints of the now lost medieval church and St Luke - patron

saint of the present and previous churches.Within the two panels there are themes high-lighting the community, history and future of Ferryhill. A ribbon of blue represents water, a river of time and the red is the lifeline, the life blood of community. At the top of the window there is a star which is a symbol of Epiphany, Revelation, Pilgrimage Guidance and Assurance.“The window has not been dated so that people now and in years to come will share in the relevance of the story,” commented a spokesperson for the church.

Children from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College are working with mentors to gain a valuable insight into the engineer-ing world thanks to funding from Durham County Council’s Area Action Part-nerships. Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland and Shildon, 4 Together and Great Aycliffe and Middridge partnerships have each donated £3,000 to the Schools Engineering Challenge. The project will see 64 year nine students from five local secondary schools work alongside South Durham companies as part of after school classes, focusing on engineering as a future career. The industry represents a sig-nificant contributor to the local economy- providing

local jobs. South Durham Engineering and Manufacturing Forum are behind the challenge where students undertake a competitive challenge to design and manufac-ture electric cars and mechanical bridges. Schools taking part are Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, Woodham Community Technology College, St John’s Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre and Tudhoe Grange and Spennymoor Comprehen-sive Schools.Two-hour weekly sessions will be held at each school where mentors will offer skills, guidance and assistance.Darren Race, chairman of South Durham Engineer-ing and Manufacturing

Forum, said, "The Schools’ Engineering Challenge is a unique programme which brings together the children, teachers and employers to learn and enjoy the skills and knowledge required for a career in engineering and manufacturing, which remains the cornerstone of the North East economy.“The aim of the scheme is to increase skills to make the pupils more employable and provide an awareness of the potential for a career in engineering or manufac-turing.” It is hoped some of the students will take up further engineering studies which will open up potential for an apprenticeship, provided by a local company in con-junction with South West Durham Training Ltd.

Engineering project builds bridges to employment

Jonathan Francis Wynn, aged 28 of Lumley Crescent, Ferryhill, recently sent a letter to the court stating that he was on holiday and was unable to attend. However, magistrates at Newton Aycliffe learnt that Wynn had also failed to appear on 8th October, stating that he was working in Weymouth and therefore, a warrant was issued for his arrest.Paul Anthony Bulmer, of Coxhoe, had arrived late at the court on 8th October but this time was present,

along with co-defendant Shane Alan McIntosh, to face the joint charge of stealing metal items valued at £360 at Middleton in Teesdale on 18th August. The court heard that the three defendants had been seen by a farmer loading Bulmer’s van with items including a cast iron fireplace, chains and harrows. He had passed on information and the vehicle registration to the police as well as contacting the landowner, who had not given permission for anyone

to be on the land.Three hours later the van was stopped in Darlington, en-route to a scrap yard. The three admitted that they had been driving around looking for scrap and did not possess a licence to do so. McIntosh had been given a conditional discharge for burglary on 20th August and Bulmer had appeared before magistrates in West Dorset in June and September on driving charges. Bulmer and McIntosh pleaded guilty and were fined £250.

Under 8s give a star performance

Ferryhill Celtic enter-tained Staindrop in the league on Sunday 24th October and went down to a 3-1 defeat in a game which Staindrop thoroughly deserved to win.Despite starting well and creating chance after chance, Celtic went 1-0 down to an own goal. Keeper Kris Carr was at

fault, but he redeemed himself with some excellent saves during the game.Celtic pulled a goal back with a good finish from Marco Oswald just after half-time, after good work from Shane Todd. The equaliser lifted Celtic but Staindrop, playing some good possession football, dominated for

long spells and scored two more goals to end up worthy winners. The defeat was a set-back to Celtic, but the signs are good for the season ahead.Man-of-the-match went to Shane Todd. The team’s next game is home in the league to Coundon Foresters on Sunday 31st October.

Celtic lose to a worthy Staindrop side
