When Richard Cortez said he preferred to do an interview in person, I was surprised, but at the same time, I wasn’t. Interviews

with artists are usually conducted via phone or e-mail in order to fit into their busy schedules. Cortez is no exception to the rule; he works at a hospital during the day as a Recreational Therapy technician, performs gigs regularly, (including a weekly variety show at Dudes with Jennifer McClain), and of course, records and releases new material. The hard-working artist has a reputation for his extremely outgoing, Bohemian persona.

When I walked into Cortez’s house, I was welcomed with a smile and a hug. I picked up the scent of oils, which he told me was ‘Van-Van,’ an essential oil used for spiritual cleansing.

“Would you like some chamomile tea?” he asked. “Yes, thank you,” I said as I glanced around the living room.

Within moments, I was in a totally different state of mind. No, not like that. Cortez is sober, and has been for a number of years. He stayed sober throughout his recent breakup, refusing to relapse and use the crutch he once knew. The state of mind I meant, was complete relaxation. Whether it was the essential oils, the chamomile tea, or the constant scent of lavender wafting through the air, I felt aligned, focused, and re-laxed. This wasn’t a special occasion – this is Cor-tez’s life. “It’s all about balance,” he says smiling.

As Joni Mitchell played in the background, we sipped our tea and spoke about his upcoming EP titled, Heartsore: Songs for Justin – his darkest album to date.

On the opening track, “10,000,” you croon “Don’t know what to do/so lost without you/my love.” It sets the tone for the album, which clearly, is about heartbreak. You go on to sing that some of your friends think that you “went off of the deep end.” Do you feel that you walked that line following this breakup?

I remember thinking, Oh my god. I’m working in mental health and I’m having a breakdown, and I didn’t know what to do. It had gone on for a year and a half, so a night out on the town with a few of the girls wasn’t going to help. I wanted to make an album about [my breakup], because I think that when some people go through break-ups, they get botox or they get tattoos, or a new car, or they disconnect and recreate themselves. In a way, this is me just shedding my skin. This is me moving forward.

We all hate feeling blue, but there can be some catharsis through exploring our inner psyche. Finding the root of the problem and coping with it in a healthy way. Do you believe that this album was cathartic for you?

This is about the decomposition of love based on two people. This is not me playing the victim. I think that I just didn’t know how to go on living, but music has always carried me through the darkest hours of life. I don’t know how to survive emotionally without songwriting... it’s become a part of the makeup of who I am. Emotional pain is like an infection – you have to remove the puss somehow. For me, it’s through music. I wasn’t sitting there writing hooks for these songs, I was sobbing into the guitar. It’s like this songwriting scab that I lived beneath as I was healing.

I wouldn’t feel comfortable interviewing you without addressing the elephant in the room. You’ve boldly included your ex’s name in the

album’s title. Does Justin know how heartbroken you were?

“I don’t even think he knows that this album exists. When you love someone so much, and they hurt you so badly, they have to know. I mean I would hope that he knows that he hurt me. It was the closest I have ever come to feeling like I loved someone. I don’t know what [Justin’s] response would be to looking at this project. I don’t think that it would be a good idea for him to listen to it.”

I think that everybody has a “Justin.” Every one has had an ex that just ripped their heart out, leaving them feeling like a shell of their former self. Do you think that fans can relate to Heartsore: Songs for Justin, or is it merely a piece of work that you’re putting out for yourself?

“I think that it’s a mix of both. I think that we all have a person in our lives that has blindsided us, or hurt us in a way that we weren’t expecting. I think there’s a lot of pain that we inflict on each other. I think that just because there’s a name in the title, doesn’t mean that we haven’t all been ‘heartsore’ before.”

Are you going to tour in support of the EP?“No. I feel like putting this [album] out is

like going back to the doctor’s office to get the stitches taken out, and now everything is healed up. I don’t need to go on tour and reopen all of these wounds in front of people. This record is very private and very personal. I don’t think that rehashing old battle scars is worth anything for me as an artist.”

On closing track, “Wait. I Love You, Always.” you sing that “I know you’re running late/but can’t you see how you’re leaving me/is breaking my heart.” The album left me thinking that you’re still hurt from the relationship, but that you’ll always love him, despite the fact that he’s gone forever. Is that right? Does the track act as closure for you as well as the album?

“Yes. In that track, I realized that in a lot of ways, I suffocated him. In releasing this album, I know that someone going through the exact same thing [as I did] is going to get their hands on this set of songs, and it’s going to help them through that. That’s what my music has always been about. It’s about healing me and helping other people. We’re human. Sometimes we need each other, and that’s okay.”

Richard Cortez and Tom Goss will be playing at the Sunshine Cathedral on Saturday November 9 at 8 p.m. Though he will not be touring, Cortez will be playing his new album, live, in its entirety. For more information visit on Richard Cortez, visit wollenbergrecords.com.

Friday 11/1Festival of Souls oHalloween may be over, but the weekend has just begun and not everyone is quite ready to discard of their expensive costumes. Thankfully, The Festival of Souls haunted house spectacular continues after Halloween. With a zombie shoot, a pitch black maze, and a demon mansion, there’s something to do for everybody. Tonight, the Zero to Sixty band will also be performing. Located at Las Olas Riverfront, the Festival of Souls keeps the terror moving. 7 p.m. Las Olas Riverfront. 300 SW 1st Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show oOne of the biggest events in Fort Lauderdale, this extravaganza showcases yacht builders and designers, exotic cars, and brokerage yachts. A wide variety of boats and sea vessels will on display including runabouts, sportfishers, high performance boats, center consoles, cabin cruisers, flat boats, catamarans, ski boars, jet boats, and the list goes on and on. Fort Lauderdale is considered the yacht-ing capital of the world and the popularity of this event proves that. The even continues throughout the weekend. The show locations include the Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Greater Fort Lauderdale Conven-tion Center, Fort Lauderdale Hilton, and The Salls Marina. Times vary. Visit showmanagement.com/fort_lauderdale/event for more information.

Saturday 11/2Day of the Dead CelebrationoThe fourth annual celebration in Fort Lauderdale hopes to not only honor the Mexican tradition but also generate modern interpretations connect-ing to a broad spectrum of demographics. The event opens at the Museum of Art with puppet shows, art workshops, and cultural lectures. At 6pm the community will gather at Huizenga Park and follow the even founder Jim Hammond and a bunch of his huge puppets to Riverwalk and the America’s Backyard/Green Room entertainment complex. The night portion of this celebration in-cludes wild sideshows, vaudeville, burlesque, and aerial performances at Green Room along with

the traditional Mexican Ofrenda altars for loved ones. The event is all day across various locations. Visit dayofthedeadflorida.com for a list of attrac-tions and times.

Chita RiveraoKnown as one of the greatest divas alive today in the musical theater world, Chita Rivera made her name in such landmark musicals as West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, and Chicago. She also won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress for the gay musical Kiss of the Spider Woman in which she plays the diva dream of a wrongfully imprisoned effeminate inmate. The awards for Chita Rivera are among the greatest an American can receive, including The Presidential Medal of Freedom; she is also the only Latino American to receive a Ken-nedy Center Honor award. 7 p.m. Wolfson The-atre. 2200 Liberty Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

John Legend oThe singer and ubiquitous songwriter has had success for the past decade working with such high profile singers as Lauryn Hill, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. His mega-hit “Ordinary People” won a Grammy in 2006. His albums have reached multi-platinum success, and he is considered one of the most sought out collabora-tors working today. The pinnacle of his success, though, came in August 2006 when he appeared in an episode of Sesame Street. Last year, Legend spent time judging on the TV show Duets before cancellation. 8 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Stand Up and Ride Ito Some gay men think they’re very funny, but the fact of the matter is that for-real comedy is best left to the professionals. Although Fort Lauderdale is not exactly a hot bed for stand-up comedians, every now and then we’re able to pull in some excellent nights of dick jokes and inappropriate racial slurs. At 7 p.m, six hysterical and critically-acclaimed comedians will take the stage for the third annual “Stand Up and Ride it: A Night of Comedy to Fight AIDS”—a red carpet event meant to benefit the Smart Ride 10. The show features both local and nationally-recognized comedians, along with headliner Lisa Corrao from The Jerk Show. A full bar, $10 appetizers and flatbreads, and over $2,000 in raffle items and giveaways will be available at the show. The Smart Ride is a 165-mile bike ride

from Miami to Key West which has raised more than $4 million for HIV/AIDS organizations across Florida. 7 p.m. The Plaza Bistro. 2900 Belmar Street, Fort Lauderdale Beach, 33304.

Tuesday 11/5Drakeo Gay friendly (and once gay-rumored) Degrassi alumni has had quite the success singing about musical parts of the female anatomy and well wishes for an ex-girlfriend. His early television career led the way to his current rap super star-dom. Thankfully, he is part of a newer generation of hip-hop culture alright with the homo. His critically-acclaimed music certainly has crossover appeal and, more importantly, he seemed to be Rihanna’s savior after that messy Chris Brown fiasco. An ensuing feud with the alleged abuser continues to this day, although Drake says he’s forgotten about both Rihanna and Brown. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Melt Away That Fat Todayby Tom bonanTI

FITNESS

It’s time to face the facts. Hop on that scale. Take a good look in the mirror. You’ve picked up a few extra pounds recently. That muffin top and those love handles simply have to

go! Stop making excuses and for the sake of your own health and well being follow these simple tips and watch the stunning results to come in the weeks ahead!

In order to lose weight, you’ve got to have a plan. Instead of thinking “diet” (with its negative connotations) come up with an overall approach that includes sticking to sound nutritional princi-ples. Doing regular cardio and weight training will help burn calories and get your heart pumping. Keep a food diary and plan your meals. Get to the gym and ride the recumbent bike or do the Precor twice a week for 20 minutes or so for starters. Lifting even light weights will help build more lean muscle which burns more calories all the time even when you’re at rest.

Don’t try to do too much all at once. It’s un-healthy to lose more than three pounds per week unless you are under a doctor’s care. You’ve got to cut calories when you are reducing, but starving yourself to lose 5 to 10 pounds in one week can result in a catastrophe. Losing too much weight all at once can cause your metabolism to plummet and you’ll lose lean muscle as well as fat. You can also damage your heart this way. The same is true with overdoing it in the gym. Work out to fatigue,

not failure. Exercise should improve your life, not kill you!

No more excuses, face it, you’re fat and you’ve got to do something about it. Whether it’s a slow metabolism, too much time at the office or you’re too tired, you are a master at making excuses. Change your outlook, believe you can shed those extra pounds and set your priorities accordingly.

Thank about what you stuff in your trap! Mind-less eating can ruin your figure. You grab a few Hershey’s Kisses from your colleagues candy jar because you’re bored. You go to the drive through and chow down on burgers and fries because you are in a hurry. You morosely devourer a tub of Heavenly Hash ice cream because you are bored with your social life. Unfortunately such mindless indulgences add up to weighty matters in the end.

Don’t drink away your waistline. People who drink soda consume more calories. Booze isn’t much better. Furthermore, it’s very common to eat more and make poor food choices after you’ve had a few. Cut out the soda. Reign in the boozing and binging.

For more tips on how to look better naked, con-tact Trainer Tom Bonanti at (954) 557-1119 and set up a free consultation today. Check out www.pumpnincgym.com! E-mail Tom at [email protected] with any and all questions concerning your fitness goals.
