On the night of the 5th of November,

people commemorate the day of one of

Britain’s most famous traitors:

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators

attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

English catholics were against king James I and they decided to

kill him and all his men.

They placed 36 barrels of gunpowder in a

cellar just under the House of Lords in the

Parliament.

Guy Fawkes was discovered when he

was going to light the fuse. The King was

saved and Fawkes was hanged.

For almost 400 years, bonfires have burned

on November 5th to remember the failed Gunpowder

Plot.

Soon, people began placing effigies of Guy Fawkes onto bonfires, and

fireworks were added to the celebrations.

Nowadays, Children make effigies of Fawkes from

old clothes stuffed with newspaper, and display

their "Guy" in the streets, asking "Penny for the

Guy?"Most of the money they get is used to buy fireworks and

sweets.

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot.We see no reason why

gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot."
