Gutteridge Wood and MeadowsOne of the most important sites forwildlife in the Yeading Valley.

Ancient woodland is adjacent tomeadows, thickets, river and a pond.Part of the Wood, called Cut ThroatWood, appears on old maps. A long lineof fine oaks stretches down to thehedgerow to the south marking the fieldboundaries between the woods. Mainlyoak, with some ash, silver birch, thehazel understory has been coppiced inthe past, and this has recently beenreinstated to let more light reach theground and encourage ground levelvegetation.

Along the northern edge of the Meadowthere are many wildflowers, particularlyin the strip between the path and theditch, a disused canal feeder. Themeadows are of great interest, thevariation in dampness and the lack ofmodern farming methods have ensuredthat a wide variety of grasses and

flowers have survived with a spectaculararray of butterflies and other insects.

The woodland, scrub and meadow ishome to a wide range of birdlifethroughout the year. The pond is hometo many invertebrates and amphibiansincluding common frog and newt. Someof the surrounding fields are activelyfarmed and are not part of the reserve, but with their fine hedgerows and treesthey contribute to the special andattractive character of the area.
