TIN ROOF GLOBALCLEAN WATER FOR ALL

GUSHLOCAL WATER EDUCATION

BY:

Fun, hands-on & curriculum-based! NEW: Specific workshops for

Grades 7 & 8!

Tin Roof’s GUSH program now has unique workshops for Grades 7 and 8! Grade 7 students explore water issues related to Quarries & Landfills, while Grade 8 students investigate Watersheds & Wetlands. Incorporating differentiated instruction strategies, it’s the same GUSH hands-on fun, now with even more curriculum links!

GUSH activities are designed by teachers with hands-on geographic & scientific inquiry in mind. Students formulate questions, gather and organize, interpret and analyze, evaluate and draw conclusions, and communicate their findings. And they have loads of fun while doing it!!

Grade 7 curriculum links include: SCIENCE: Interactions in the Environment, Pure Substances & Mixtures; GEOGRAPHY: Physical Patterns in a Changing World, Natural Resources around the World: Use and Sustainability; LANGUAGE: Oral Communication

Grade 8 curriculum links include: SCIENCE: Water Systems; GEOGRAPHY: Global Settlement: Patterns and Sustainability, Global Inequalities: Economic Development and Quality of Life; LANGUAGE: Oral Communication, Media Literacy

LOCAL WATER ISSUES CONTEXTUALIZED IN THE CURRICULUM

HANDS-ON INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING

From hospitals to schools and sidewalks to roads, many things in our communities are constructed using gravel that’s been pulled from the ground. Many wastes created by our communities are also disposed of in the ground. And that same ground is home to an essential natural resource: aquifers! GUSH for Grade

7’s focuses on water issues related to quarries and landfills and the impacts on humans and the natural environment. Students have a blast pumping water out of model quarries and learn first-hand how difficult it is to remove contaminants from water, all in a fun hands-on learning environment!

By exploring your school’s actual watershed, GUSH helps Grade 8 students think about water in their local environment and some of the factors affecting water quality and quantity nearby. With engaging & interactive activities, students build their own watershed models and use information from conservation authorities to assess the health of their local watershed.

Students also discover how wetlands regulate the quality and quantity of water within their watersheds, while understanding the varying roles and points of view of local governments, citizen groups and developers. Together, students learn just how complex watershed management can be!

GRADE 7 QUARRIES & LANDFILLS: INTERACTIONS & RESOURCES

GRADE 8 WATERSHEDS & WETLANDS: SYSTEMS & SUSTAINABILITY

GUSH is a great presentation and very hands-on for the students. It has amazing links to the curriculum! There are a lot of teachers at my school who are interested in more GUSH workshops!
