I I-TARRIED INTO A DOG SHOW TA}TILY

by Tony Szczuka**Original Article

when r was dating, t thought my girlfriend realry liked dogs. somuch so that she even went to I dog show or two. I assumed afterwe got married that we might spend a sunday afternoon at a dogshow gyery now and then ana thlt was just iine by me. rtttre-drdr realize that r h'as about to narry into a DoG sHow FA[rLyt

Here are a few of the clues that told me this:1. When we were datingr my wife carried things like lipstick andeye shadow in her purse. Now she carries-liver and-Beef

Je rky.

2. r now-get up earrier on the weekends to go to a dog show thanr do during the week. llot only am r not getting piia forgetting up this earry, but it isn't even ior a 6oir game.

3. { Suiet evening at, home means watching Tv ln the basenent withfour German shepherde who donrt underitand the meanlng ofwords l-ike qulet, stay, lie down, etc.4. showing off pictures of your ,kids' gets you comments rike

"Good Back,', ItNice Reachit, ,Are His iars i;p?r'.

5. Gettlng up,at L:00am, driving eight hours, standing on aconcrete floor for hours, alr foi a minor reserve is ... whatdid you caII tt? Oh yea, FUNI

6. Going out at night means a fast food dinner and a one hourdrlve to t,ralning class.

7 - A shopping lrip is golng to a dog show you have nothingentered at Just to 'shop'.8. rf the weather is nice enough to go golflng, it's nice enoughto take the dogs to the park

9. r-pay money to a stranger to take my dog anay from me, terl mewhere r can 90, and tale all the glory ir th; dog wlnet

10. when r went to purchase a new sports coat, my wife tord thesalesman that it had to be nachine washabie iince r wouLd bewearlng it, to the dog shows.

11. Now aII the ties r get for christmas and Birthdays have dogson them.

L2. whenever we go on vacation, we arways ask two questions.First, do we take the dogs or board-them. The second questionis what do we do wit.h them when we get there because we- alwaystake them.

The following article was taken from the January/February, 1989 issue of TheGreat Dane Reporter. Renee Tiepelman gave permission to reprint the articlebecause she thought her experience might be of help to others, no matter thebreed, with the same type of decision to make. The problem might not beexactly the same, but many of us have had to decide about surgery for olderdogs. Thank you, Renee, for sharing your experience.

his lower jaw, next to thebut we just thought that

For the next few days, I noticed that every time I tossed him a biscuit or anice cube, there was a raised pink area, about the diameter of a dime, where hehad lost the tooth. I made an appointment with our veterinarjan because Iassumed he had an abscess and would need antibiotics.

My vet, Dr.Gordon Gilliatt, took one look at the spot and gave me the badnews. He felt sure that it was a carcinoma. I was devastated, broken-hearted. I iust knew I was going to lose my prec'ious companion. Dr. Gilliattsaid we would have to biopsy to be sure, but he felt confident it wasma'lignant. The biopsy was done and sent to the University of Missouri inColumbia, lvl0. It was agonizing waiting for the results and sure enough, itwas mal ignant.

Dr. Gilliatt urged me not to throw in the towel just yet. He sent us to theUniversity (two hours away) to talk to the doctors there. They examined Eliand proceeded to explain to me what they recommended by way of an operation. They wanted to remove not only the tumor, but a section of his lower jaw.More precisely, from in front of the can'ine on the right side to behind thecanine on the left sjde. I thought to myself, "How barbaric!" How could Ilet them do this to my Great Dane, especially one so old. llhen it wasapparent that I was backing off, the doctors told me that all the preliminarytests revealed that, other than the tumor, my dog was incredibly healthy andthere was no evidence that the cancer had.meiastisized to hjs lirngs. Theyseem appalled that I would even consider not giving Eli this chance. I toldthem that my big concern was qualjty of life, not quantity and that I wasn'tgoing to put my dog through a lengthy, painful recovery just to gain moretime. They assured me that he would have quality of life after surgery, andthat recovery time would be minimal

I needed more time to think. Eli and I went home. My husband, John, and Idiscussed at great length, "What is right for Eli?" Above all, we wanted tobe fair to him. The next day I asked Dr. Gilliatt, "lf he was your dog, whatwould you do?" He replied, "Even considering his age, but also consideringhis health, I would have them do the surgery."

So off to Columbia went El'i and John. The operation was performed on Thursdaymorning. This was a very anxious time for us as we were hoping we had madethe right decjsjon. John stayed at the veterinary school until Eli was out ofsurgery. Everything had gone quite well and Eli was in jntensive care. Hewould have to stay a few days for observation.

El i (Continued)

I traveled to the Universjty on Saturday morning to spend the weekend withEl'i. The doctors let me take him to a nearby motel and keep him overnight.lfey would be on call if I needed them. It was so good to spend time withEli, even though he did a lot of sleeping. I took him back to the hospital onSunday afternoon and returned home that evening.

0n Monday morning the hospita'l called and said that Elj could go home. I wason the road within minutes. I could hardly wait! I was given-jnstructions onhow to feed him and what to watch for. He was to eat strictly canned food fortwo weeks and then be gradually weaned back to his normal diet. His appetiteremained good. 0nce home, Eli was very happy. By Thursday he seemed prettymuch back to normal

Everything I had been told by the doctors at the University of Missouri and myown vet, Dr.Gilliatt, proved to be true. They said the recovery wou'ld bequick and that quality of life would be evident. The doctors and the studentin charge of Eli, Mike Weiss, gave him very good care and were s'incerelyinterested in him. Mike had become particularly fond of Eli.Eli's lower jaw is a different shape now and has no front teeth. But, withthose big beautiful lips that drape down both sides, he'is just as handsome asever. I realize that every situation is different and that in more advancedcases of cancer of this type, perhaps a different decision would be most kind.Bgt, I did want you to know our story so that if some day you face a similarcircumstance and have the same concerns, you can reflect-bick on thisexperi ence.

By_the.way, uEli" is Ch. K-D Dane's Afternoon Delight, C.D. He still chews onnylon bones, visits nursing homes, and reigns supr6me over the other dogs.
