Our River, Our ValleyWITH A MAJOR WATER PLANNING PROCESS GOING ON IN COLORADO, the Arts Center is partnering with the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District on “Our River, Our Valley,” a series of programs and projects to remind us of the importance of our streams and rivers to the quality of life in our valley.

THE 10TH GUNNISON VALLEY JOURNALAs a part of the Our River Our Valley project, the Gunnison Arts Center is coordinating the 10th edition of the Gunnison Valley Journal, a collection of stories, poems, photographs and drawings. This publication serves as a forum for local and emerging writers and artists to publish their work, express their creativity and join a community of writers.

OPEN COMMUNITY JURIED ART SHOW IN THE MAIN GALLERY In the spirit of the theme, the Gunnison River Headwaters and Valleys, this exhibit will feature art submissions from artists of many mediums and ages. Cash prizes sponsored by the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District will be awarded in various categories. Submissions are due May 31st. Visit the website for more information.

The Arts Center is joining forces with the Gunnison River Festival, a local non-profit, to help raise funds for improvements at the Gunnison Whitewater Park. Featuring three amazing river-themed films, this fundraiser brings together fun, friends, fluids, and food along with a silent auction including amazing art and exciting raffle prizes.

THE GUNNISON NAVYThe Gunnison Navy was filmed in the 1940’s from a Hollywood film maker during World War I. It’s a short film about a group of Gunnison locals, high class

fishing, soggy pants and the beautiful Gunnison River before it was damned. This film was sent overseas to the American Soldiers to remind them what they were fighting for.

BLACK CANYON: THE NEXT GENERATIONFrom Cloud Level Media out of Breckenridge Colorado, we bring you “Black Canyon: The Next Generation”, winner of the 2012 short film of the year awards. In the fall of 2011, a team of ten boaters ventured into the Black Canyon in Colorado to experience the challenge, adventure and beauty of this 2000 foot sheer-walled canyon.

DamNationThis powerful film odyssey across America explores the change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Dam removal has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang. When obsolete dams come down rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access. DamNation’s majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a metamorphosis in values, from conquest of the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature.

JOIN US UNDER THE BIG TREES OF LEGION PARK at the corner of Tomichi Avenue and Teller Street every Sunday evening, June through August at 6 p.m. for free live music and community and family fun. This long standing tradition has continued over the years, featuring the music of local and regional bands. Every year we see new and familiar faces as community members and visitors gather together come rain or shine to enjoy the park, the people and the performances. This summer’s line-up is going to be better than ever and we can’t wait to see you there!

JUNE 8TH – THE LINDELLS & CEMENT PONDChris and Kim Lindell have been playing their beautiful-dark-folk-pop-roots-rock in the American west since the 80’s. ‘The Lindells’ will be joined by ‘Cement Pond’, a jam-child of three music industry veterans; Bob Matthews -producer on many Greatful Dead classics, Larry Otis - one of the finest guitarists in the country playing with Commander Coady, and Stan Davis - a Gunnison native bringing his 25 year musical experience to the trio. A great blend of music to start the summer off right!

JUNE 15TH – THE SCONESPerforming as a trio with acoustic guitar, banjo, bass and drums, The Scones are sure to bring some rockin’ Americana to Gunnison. The Scones are seasoned pros who provide a high energy, entertaining experience not to miss.

JUNE 22ND – GYPSY JAZZ SOCIAL CLUBLed by the expert guitar work of Les Choy, the Gypsy Jazz Social Club grew out of his Gypsy Duets. Bringing you both traditional gypsy repertoire and non-gypsy jazz standards and original compositions, this local favorite is sure to impress Sunday listeners.

JUNE 29TH – 18 MILE RADIUSGunnison’s own Colorado Flavored Americana! Performing original and covered Americana-Folk music with influences from John Hiatt and Bob Dylan, this accomplished quartet is sure to bring a memorable experience.

JULY 6TH – MINE CONTROLMine Control is a five-member funk band from Crested Butte, Colorado. Guitar, bass, keys and drums fuse to bring the valley a funky sound old time miners, ski bums and visitors can all dance to. Ski Funk!

JULY 13TH – SIMPLER TIMES BLUEGRASSSimpler Times Bluegrass will always bring a ‘simpler time in life’ with a blend of fiddles, guitar, banjo, mandolin and thumping bass. With American mountain melodies and Colorado roots, their love of music is infectious!

JULY 20TH – THE FUNKY BOB SHOW!One man on stage sounding like a ten piece funk band… is that possible? With the Funky Bob Show it is! Enjoy this one of

a kind musical experience that is completely custom designed and self sufficient. The Funky Bob Show is sure to bring the grooves and get your feet tappin’.

JULY 27TH – BRUCE HAYESBruce Hayes, a local favorite, produces a fusion of musical styles combining rock, bluegrass, celtic, folk and jazz. On stage his presence is electrifying, tapping his feet on an amplified floor-board, slapping accents on his guitar, wailing on the harmonica and dancing around the strings. A performance not to miss!

AUGUST 3RD – FREE THE HONEYThree daughters of the south, Jenny Hill, Lizzy Plotkin and Katherine Taylor, followed the trail west to the Gunnison Valley. Here they found each other and a blend of new-folk music emerged. Fusing together elements including harmony singing, twin fiddles, open back banjo, guitar, mandolin, storytelling and mountain culture, Free the Honey provides a beautiful and amazing sound all their own.

AUGUST 10TH – CASEY JAMES PRESTWOOD AND THE BURNING ANGELSIf the late night scene on Broadway Street in Nashville, Tennessee could talk, they’d sing you a Casey James Prestwood tune. Drenched in the honest twang that made Gram Parsons and Hank Williams household names, the classic crooner’s carefree vocals and careful guitar playing feel more like country than a worn-in pair of cowboy boots.

AUGUST 17TH – DOCTOR ROBERTDoctor Robert is in a new generation of Beatles tribute bands with a commitment to the accurate reproduction of over 100 songs of ‘The Beatles’. Doctor Robert has redefined the concept of a Beatles tribute band, playing extended sets of music with no two set lists ever being the same.

AUGUST 24TH – POLICULTUREPoliculure is a seven-piece original mountain reggae band from Boulder, Colorado. Combining heavy drum and bass, roots rhythm, a melodic horn section and conscious lyrics, Policulture is sure to bridge the gap between generations, unite all under one sound and guaranteed to get your booty shakin’.

AUGUST 31ST – TWO FACES WESTTitled “Two Faces West” after the 1960’s western television show based in Gunnison, Colorado, these three local university students, Quinn, Kurt and Mick will be playing their unique, eclectic blues/rock sound in the park for our final free concert of the summer.

STROLL DOWN MAIN STREET OF beautiful, historic Gunnison from 5 - 8 p.m on the first Friday of the month to visit unique galleries featuring a wide variety of art and artists and hear local musicians show off their talents. Including professional galleries and co-ops as well as our our non-profit Community Arts Center, Gunnison’s First Friday ArtWalk and Music makes for a memorable evening! Join us in the Main and Upper Galleries of the Gunnison Arts Center for a reception with our featured artists of the month. While you are here don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience our outdoor courtyard with free live music under the summer trees and romantic evening lights. This summer’s music line up will include an eclectic mix of music bound to inspire.

MAIN GALLERY: OPEN COMMUNITY JURIED ART SHOW - OUR RIVER OUR VALLEYArtists from all ends of the Gunnison Valley will be showcasing their Gunnison River-themed works in this dynamic

exhibition of both 2-D and 3-D work. Cash prizes and a “people’s choice” prize will be awarded at the closing of the ArtWalk. Drop-off dates are Friday, May 30th (10-6) and Saturday, May 31st (10-2). $10/submission or $8/submission for GAC Members. Also check out the various Our River Our Valley events happening this evening including a reception for the Gunnison Valley Journal, an open-mic reading, live “water commercials,” and more.

MUSIC BY MARIMBA MU GOMO Enjoy a different sound this Fridays @ 5 from the Marimba Mu Gomo (Marimba in the Mountains) Troup, an eight member group made up of Gunnison and Crested Butte locals. Listen to traditional and original Zimbabwean music to start the summer off right. All of

the African wooden Marimbas including the soprano, baritone, bass, and tenor will be on stage in the GAC’s Courtyard. Get excited to learn the marimbas at the Marimba Workshop, held the very next day!

JULY 3RD

MAIN GALLERY: HIGH POINT; THE ART OF SHOWING HORSES. This show is a benefit art show celebrating horses for The Year of The Horse, 2014. Featuring an diverse collection of paintings and works by equine artists Barbara Haynie and Cheri Isgreen, this intriguing show has been traveling to communities all across Colorado.

UPPER GALLERY: TRANSFIGURED.This layered and metaphorical show of oil paintings by recent Western graduate, Molly Smith will fill the newly painted and delightful upper Gallery for the first time in several years. Come out to see this show and help us celebrate the renewed use of this wonderful exhibition space.

JULY CONTINUEDMUSIC BY LEN TRUJILLOLen is a solo acoustic guitar performer playing music from the 60s, and beyond, and offers a blend of classic rock and country sounds. Influenced by artists such as The Eagles, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel and of course, Johnny Cash, Len reaches out to the audience and attempts to connect them with a pleasant memory and period of time.

AUGUST 1ST

MAIN GALLERY: THE TUESDAY NIGHT QUILTERS. This diverse group of local women meets weekly to inspire and mentor each other. Their different styles, strengths and interests are shown in this beautiful display of quilts of all sizes. Intricate stitching, interesting patterns, bold colors, and a sense of connection with our heritage are defining elements in this dynamic show.

UPPER GALLERY: THE OPEN COMMUNITY ART SHOW, BIKE ART. This year’s theme will be all things bike in celebration of the return of the USA Pro-Cycling Challenge to the Gunnison Valley. Drop –off dates for work are Friday, July 25th (10-6) and Saturday, July 26th (10-2). $10/submission or $8/submission for GAC Members. SEPTEMBER 5TH

MAIN GALLERY: ROSSI PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY. Local resident Rossi Phillips has a BFA in Photography and has been a fine arts photographer for over 30 years. Her collection of beautiful canvas wraps features landscapes, nature studies and abstract forms found in nature around the Gunnison Valley.

UPPER GALLERY: CHERYL PETTIGREW PAINTINGS. Cheryl, a long time Gunnison resident and Western graduate spends much of her free time engaged in her passion for painting. In this exhibit she will be showing a recent series of landscapes and seascapes portraying sunrises and sunsets. These large, colorful works are sure to delight.

Music and Film AFRICAN MARIMBA MUSIC WORKSHOP ~ (AGES 8 - ADULT)Saturday, June 7. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.Come experience the music of Zimbabwe in this fun summer workshop. Join musicians from the local Marimba Mu Gomo troupe (Marimba in the Mountains) where instruction will be tailored to any skill-level. Get a chance to play all of the wooden marimbas; soprano, tenor, baritone, and bass and even learn a traditional Zimbabwean song. There is no word for music or rhythm in Africa as it is a way of life, a reference for life. This workshop is great for any skill level and perfect for parents and kids. The workshop will be held outside on the Gunnison Arts Center Courtyard (or inside, depending on weather). Please bring sunscreen, water and a snack. Min 5 students/ max 12 students. $25 Adults / $20 Kids (12-). Instructors: Barbara Haas and Karen Immerso.

SINGER SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUNDFriday, June 27. Doors 6:30 p.m. Show 7:00 p.m.The GAC is excited to bring singer-songwriters in the round night to you this summer. Join us as five local singer-songwriters share their stories and music in the Black Box Theater. It’s like being invited into the living room of a few of Gunnison’s best musical talents. Enjoy a wonderful evening of a distinct form of artistry in our small valley. Featuring Chris Coady, Evelyn Roper, Kevin Walter and Alan Wartes accompanied by Issa Forrest. Monthly Film SeriesIn collaboration with the Crested Butte Film Festival, the Gunnison Arts Center presents a monthly film series featuring a powerful line up of diverse and inspiring films including audience favorites and new independent cinematic masterpieces. Doors open at 6:30 and shows start at 7pm. Tickets $10

JUNE 28TH: THE ARMSTRONG LIELance Armstrong - cycling’s deposed champion and most prominent liar - is brought to life in Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney’s film. The film starts innocently enough in 2009 when Gibney was hired to make a film about Armstrong’s comeback to cycling. The project was then shelved when the doping scandal erupted, and re-opened after Armstrong’s confession on Oprah. This film picks up in 2013 and presents an intense, insider’s view of the unraveling of one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of sports. As Lance Armstrong himself says: “I didn’t live a lot of lies, but I lived one big one.” Riveting, revealing and nearly redeeming, THE ARMSTRONG LIE is a must-see on the big screen. Directed by Alex Gibney. Film running time is 124 minutes. Rated R.

JULY 19TH: A BIRDER’S GUIDE TO EVERYTHINGSideways meets Stand by Me in this endearing story of friendship, family and a place in bird-watching’s history books. On the eve of his widower father’s second wedding, fifteen-year-old David spots what may just be the extinct Labrador duck. Now he and the two other stalwart members of the local Young Birders Society, joined by their headstrong photographer classmate Ellen, take off on a rollicking, interstate road trip in search of a rare bird and elusive answers to teenage questions large and small. With marvelous supporting performances by Ben Kingsley and James LeGros, A BIRDER’S GUIDE TO EVERYTHING is an alternately poignant and funny window into the thoughtful world of birding and the inner peace that can be discovered during a walk in the woods. Rob Meyer delivers a sparkling feature film with a coming-of-age tale to warm the hearts of anyone who grew up with a nerdy passion. AUGUST 23RD: BIG EASY EXPRESSImagine hopping a train from Oakland, CA all the way to New Orleans. Imagine on that train are three of your favorite bands: Britain’s acclaimed Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Tennessee’s Old Crow Medicine Show. Imagine the music playing all night long through the southwestern desert and stopping in towns for surprise shows. You have the BIG EASY EXPRESS…three bands, six cities, one train and thousands of miles of track. The Big Easy Express documents a cinematic musical journey, a “tour of dreams” that results in a film that is nothing short of magical. Filled with joyous crowds, late night laughter, endless music and raucous adventure, this summertime film will have you dancing your heart out. Directed by Emmett Mallow. Yellow Mask from destroying Metropolis. It’s fun for everyone as the Turn Back the Dial Players presents readers theatre versions of old time Superman and Flash Gordon radio episodes. Take Dad to The Radio for ‘An Evening of Superheroes’! The highlight of this Father’s Day weekend will be the world premiere of “The China Doll Murders” on opening night, based on a short story by local resident, Calvin Curry. Adapted for our stage and directed by Mike Callihan. Tickets: $12 Adults / $10 (kids 12-/seniors 60+).

SUMMER MELODRAMAJuly 31st, August 1st - 2nd and August 7th - 9thThe tradition continues! Since the early 19th century, melodramatic theatrical presentations have been playing on audience’s emotions by exaggerating characters and plot to extreme levels on stage. Don’t miss the Gunnison Arts Center’s hysterical rendition of this traditional theatrical genre this August. Featuring local talented directors, actors and crew members, this fun, family friendly show in our dramatic Black Box Theater is sure to leave you aching with laughter.

“GETTING IT WRIGHT” – AN ORIGINAL MUSICALSeptember 4th, 5th and 6th Doors 7 p.m.; Curtain at 7:30 p.m. Matinee on the 7th Doors 1:30 p.m.; Curtain at 2:00 p.m. We are delighted to introduce to the GAC’s Black Box Theater, a funny new musical about the exploits of the Wright Brothers, written by Joseph Reiser and Enid Holden. “Getting It Wright” will follow the Wright Brothers as they are inspired in their dreams of flight by four mischievous muses. Sit back and soar through a new musical experience for all ages.

Provide your child with the ultimate theatrical experience! Xanadu Performing Arts Company is designed to inspire and motivate. Campers experience the joy of performing on stage while also gaining self-confidence, critical thinking skills, and the importance of teamwork. Campers are introduced to a variety of theatrical aspects including: prop and stage design, costume design, music, dance, and acting.

In this summer’s show, The Peak, a young boy finds himself traveling from 2014 to 2070 in The Nation of Emmons. Watch as the government slowly unfolds, secrets are reveled, and the boy from the past tries to help a young girl and a robot save The Nation.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre company, will visit the Gunnison Valley again this year with a team of directors and everything it takes to put on a play…except the cast. An audition will be held on Monday, August 11th and approximately 50 roles will be cast for local students ages 6 – 18. No advance preparation is necessary and all students are encouraged to audition. The show is rehearsed throughout the week with most students rehearsing 4 ½ hours each day, however not all students will be required at every rehearsal. Three public performances will be presented on Saturday the 16th. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories…a twist on the fairytales you know and love. MCT’s mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts.

AFRICAN DANCE WORKSHOP ~ (AGES 8 – ADULT)Wednesday, July 23rd 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.Have you ever wanted to try African Dance? Here is your chance in this perfect class for the ‘Never Ever’ dancers and even returning ones. Learn the rhythms of traditional West African dance in this short exploratory workshop. Get your core moving and experience the fun with live drummers and encouraging professional instruction! Great for everyone, no dance experience necessary! $15/workshop. INTRO TO HOOP DANCE WORKSHOP ~ (AGES 8 – ADULT)Saturday, July 26th 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.Get funky in this short new workshop for beginners to learn the art of hula-hooping. Hoop dance is a fun exciting way to get a whole body workout, especially during the summer time. Focus on basic skills such as transitioning the hoop up and down one’s body, isolations, integrating dance into hooping and creating short combinations. ADULTW DANCENEVER EVER TAP ~ (AGES 13 – ADULT)Mondays, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. July 14 – August 11.Never Ever Tap is for adults who have never taken a tap class before. This will be a perfect introductory course to a fun filled style of dance, TAP! Learn the basic core functions of the tap shoe and the fundamentals of tap from the very beginning. After learning rhythm and foot coordination, students will be able to put together tap combinations to form a structured dance. BORN TO DANCE! ~ (AGES 13 – ADULT)Tuesdays, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. July 15 – August 12.Do you dance in your living room to your favorite song? Open to beginners and dancers of all experience levels, this class is meant to inspire personal growth through dance movement. In this up beat class, dancers will experience a different style of dance each time. This includes a fusion of ballet, contemporary, jazz, theatrical dance and hip hop! Each class is different! Enjoy a fun, non-competitive, exciting dance class for young adults and adults who were BORN TO DANCE! Students should wear stretch-able, comfortable clothes. NEVER EVER BALLET ~ (AGES 13 – ADULT)Wednesdays, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. July 16 – August 13.Never Ever Ballet is for adults who have never taken a dance class before. This will be a perfect introductory course to ballet, the basis of all dance forms. Learn ballet terminology, positions and basic ballet technique. This is a short five-week summer course. If you feel that you need more instruction when this class is over, sign up for the Never Ever Ballet 10 week course in the fall. YOGALATES – DANCE STRENGTHENING CLASS ~ (AGES 16-ADULT) Thursdays, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. July 17 – August 14.This class takes the best of both worlds (Yoga and Pilates) and creates a total body, core-powered workout. Keep in shape this summer and get ready for fall dance classes. Lengthen and strengthen your limbs and stomach. Great for all fitness levels, as each exercise can be modified to adjust the degree of difficulty. Low impact and relaxing, but your muscles are gonna burn! YOUTH DANCEMICKIES & MINNIES DANCE CLASS ~ (2 - 3 YEAR OLDS)Mondays, 10:15 – 11:00 a.m. July 14 – August 11.Get your little guy or gal moving in the right direction in this fun early childhood dance class. This class will combine fun movement games with dance technique. Kids will be exposed to rhythm, tempo, direction and ranges of movement as well as getting to free dance! Combo classes are meant to allow younger students to experience many genres of dance. These classes will include one to three dance styles of dance. In combo classes, each type of dance is practiced separately to keep young minds engaged.

Adult Art ClassesPLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING ~ (AGES 16 – ADULT)Tuesdays, June 3 – 24. 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. 4 weeks.In this class open to all experience levels, instructor Molly Smith will walk students through the process of setting up for and composing a Gunnison landscape oil painting from the ground up. Students will learn about the challenges and rewards of painting in the out of doors. Enjoy the warm summer months, relax and access your creativity at the end of the day! No experience necessary. GIVE YOUR ART AN ONLINE PRESENCEMonday and Tuesday, June 23 – 24. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.Learn how to use various online websites to promote your arts or crafts. Students should bring their own laptop (or a friend’s!) that has 10 images of their work on it. By the end of the workshop you will learn how to make and manage a Facebook Artist’s Page, a Twitter account, a Pinterest account, a Tumblr account, and Weebly personal website (which can also be used as a blog!). LEARN HOW TO KNIT IN THE ROUND ~ (AGES 18 – ADULT) Monday and Tuesday, August 4 & 5. 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Join local fiber artist Susan Crawford for a fun and social workshop and venture into the world of knitting. Students will learn the essential skills needed to step into more complicated knitting projects. Bring a set of double pointed needles, 2 circular needles (any length) and a 40” circular needle as well as yarn appropriate for the size of needles. DESIGN YOUR OWN KNITTED HAT ~ (AGES 18 – ADULT)Monday and Tuesday, August 11 & 12. 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Learn how to design and knit your own hat for those chilly summer evenings. Students are welcome to bring any knitting books or stitch patterns for ideas or may follow those offered in class. Additional supplies students should bring are: yarn enough for a hat, needles for the size of yarn, a tape measure, stitch markers, scissors and crochet hook as well as a notebook and pencil. Needles should be double-pointed and you will need either two circular or one long (40”) circular needle. Students who don’t know how to knit in the round should take the first class in this knitting series. Some yarn will be available for use at no extra charge at the Arts Center. $25. Join this short, three-week workshop to learn how to create small-scale textured and dimensional assemblage and collage wall art piece that celebrates the bicycle. While learning about well know assemblage artists for inspiration, participants will discover how to combine metal, wood, paper, found objects and resin while using stamping, painting and collage techniques in the creation of a finished composition. $65 Includes all supplies. DIGITAL ANIMATION CAMP ~ (AGES 12 – 18)Monday – Friday, July 28 – August 1. 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.Final Film Showing (for parents, friends, family and the public), Friday 2:00 p.m.*Students must bring a sack lunchCost: $145/studentDo not miss this opportunity for making animated films with Colorado Mesa University Professor, Katie Hadar-Meade. Students will learn the fundamentals of animation, which is the most basic form of filmmaking. Using traditional stop animation, basic drawing, film, and photography students will each bring a short story to life. Students will also be introduced to basic story structure, acting and directing for film, editing and scoring. Each story will be scored with basic to advanced sound. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and students will learn to work together to help one another complete their visions. No experience is needed – all levels welcome! Students will need to bring a basic digital camera (Smart phones work very well. Advanced camera systems are great and can be brought at the discretion of parents/guardians). Strongly suggested, but not required are a laptop (Macs preferred) and software including iMovie, iPhoto, or similar programs. All campers will have the opportunity to see their film included in a showing at the Crested Butte Film Festival (Sepember 25 – 28, 2014)!

Katie grew up in the mountains building forts and saving animals, even when they didn’t need it. Katie captures stories with paint, film, photography and words. She has worked both in the US and abroad; she likes the mountains the best. Katie is interested in incorporating wide-open western spaces into contemporary medias such as animation, installation and film. Katie currently teaches at Colorado Mesa University in the Graphic Design program.
