    GENE RAL INSTRUCTIONS.

~- Practical instruction in the equipment should be given to~ each recruit before any attempt is macic to instruct him ill

~ out the work of each particular number.Instruction in gun drill should begin as soon as they are

e ? Conversant with all parts of tho equipment, and can handle., ~ci the best and quickest Iclanner each of tleo working parts of~ the gun. Once the work of each number has beets tlIoI-oughiy1 meeastc~’~d, t should not take long for the reiruit to learn the

~ actual (Irill. - -- it is most important that a marked distinction should be

drawn between instruct-iou and drill.During the former the language used should be as simple

as possible, and the meaning of all technical ternis which arenecessary must be carefully explailled. A conversationaltone should be adopted and tInder iso circumstances whatevershould anything in the nature of long quotations from drillhooks be allowed, Theescion sheo~ld be permitted to assumean easy attitude and tlueir interest should not be allowed toflag. They should be encOUIage(1to ask questions.

At drill, on tho contrary, rigid discipline must be maims-tamed, orders must be clear and decisive and the (letachmcrltslliade to work steadily, sieiartly and rapidly. At the sametime the utmost accuracy is essential and any deviations from -the methods laid down cnust at once be checked.
