Small businesses are offered communication with Ottawa

It's a long way from the Gulf Islands to Parliament Hill in Ottawa. So far, in fact, it is almost impossible to hear the individual voices of small business operators.

However the collective voice of 82,000 small businesses across Canada can be heard in Ottawa under the umbrella organization called the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

Dis t r ic t manager John Wytenbroek was in Salt Spring recently to visit 45 businesses and determine their interest in joining this organization. His sales territory covers Mill Bay to Port Hardy including the Gulf Islands.

"I found it very positive here, very upbeat," Wytenbroek told the Driftwood. Due to the tremendous amount of interest shown, he is returning at the end of November to visit other Gulf Island businesses about joining the CFIB.

High profile federation keeps business operators up to date

John Wytenbrook on Salt Spring

Agency is needed here From Page Bl

Rooke says Small Business Week is a national event designed to increase public awareness about the role small businesses play in the Canadian economy and to let people know what services are available to entrepreneurs.

She added that the business centre is especially important to people looking for information on business opportunities on Salt Spring because there is no licensing agency here which could provide some of that information.

"Other places can do thing we can't do here. As part of the Capital Regional District you don't need a business license so it is harder for people to track down information.

"In places where there are business licenses you have that information and a mechanism to tell you what is going on and how many businesses are going in."

To coincide with Small Business Week, the local office will have a representative in from the Federal Development Bank who, for a small fee, will meet with people considering starting their own businesses and walk them through their game plan.

The FDR representative will also draw up a report detailing his recommendations.

From Page Bl

tion is to ensure that independent business operators have a voice in

the legislation which affects them. It operates with a president, board of directors, regional directors and district sales managers across the country.

The pr imary prov inc ia l spokesperson responsible for legislative affairs, member services and general communication with the public through the media is provincial affairs director Kathy Sanderson who is based in Vancouver.

The federation is a very high profile organization and president John Bulloch is called upon by the media for statements when issues affecting small business in Canada are examined.

Information to members comes through newsletters sent every six to eight weeks accompanied by a mandate, a survey of how members feel about specific issues relating to small business. Results of the national mandate are compiled and a summary sent out with the next newsletter and mandate. This ensures that the members know what the collective feeling of the federation is and what direction it will be taking on each issue.

Members also know how they stand in comparison with other members.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the federation is encouraged to call or write to the B.C. office at 525-625 Howe Street, Vancouver, V6C 2T6, 684-5325.

Flu shots offered to islanders

The Capital Regional District Health Department has received a supply of flu vaccine which it will begin administering to eligible persons on Salt Spring Island within the next few weeks.

Influenza is a highly contagious disease characterized by sudden fever, severe aches and pains, coughs and sneezes. The purpose of the vaccine is to ensure that immunity levels are built up prior to the arrival of the virus.

People who are considered to be at high risk will not be charged for the vaccination. Those people include;

Adults and children with certain chronic medical disorders such as chronic lung or heart disease, immunodeficiencies, chronic renal or metabolic diseases;

Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities;

Healthy persons over 65 years old.

Adults require one injection while some children may require two injections a month apart

Those eligible and who wish to receive the vaccine should contact their family physicians or the local health clinic. That clinic can be contacted by calling 537-5541.

Others who do not fall into one of the above groups but who would like to be vaccinated should make arrangements through their family doctor.

Home support workers honoured formerly known as Homemakers, are part of an emerging profession many people know little about. These workers are trained individuals, who play a vital role in assisting older people to remain in their homes, despite increasing frailty.

Not only do many people prefer to live in familiar surroundings as long as possible, but spaces in institutions are not frequently available and need to be reserved for those individuals whose needs are beyond home resources.

Home Support Workers provide

care on a regular basis in their clients' home, helping with personal and domestic tasks. In most cases, their involvement in the lives of their clients goes beyond the actual tasks performed.

The society also employs respite Home Support Workers, who pro

vide a break—on a scheduled basis — for family members who are the regular caregivers.

Home Support Workers able to work late afternoons, weekends, overnight or on a live-in basis are in short supply. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this team can obtain further information by contacting administrator Margaret Mullin, at 537-9955.

Basketry using the common blackberry vine was the subject of a workshop held on Galiano Island last week. Here, Mayne Island resident Kathleen Partington weaves together her blackberry vine. Workshop was taught by guest artist Casey Wood.

Baskets use blackberry vine At a workshop at the Galiano

Activity Centre on Monday, October 9, Casey Wood of Orcas Island demonstrated how to make baskets from the common trailing blackberry.

Some 28 people participated in the workshop, including residents of Galiano, Mayne and Gossip islands plus weekenders from Vancouver. Organized by Phyllis Harris and sponsored by Adult Education, the workshop lasted three hours.

During that time, Wood gave a h i s to ry of her craft and demonstrated her methods. As a

new resident of Orcas Island from the American mid-west, Wood decided to make her living growing flowers and vegetables, but encountered opposition to her plans from local blackberry vines. Frustrated, she decided she would use these natural resources — and so her new industry began.

She favours free shapes in her basketry, often using feathers, wool or gold and silver thread to vary the texture and colour of her finished work.

With tea and goodies provided by Phyllis Harris and husband John

Sibbald during a short break, the afternoon concluded with a show of the group's accomplishments and presentation of prizes. Simone Le Blanc and daughter Amanda won a prize for the best-formed basket and Marion Sutherland (North Galiano) and Terry Waines (Gossip) shared a box of bandaids for the most unorthodox design.

Participants wishing further information on this craft can reach Casey Wood by writing to her at Orcas Olga , Orcas Is land, Washington State.

Galiano

Ella Johnston of the Galiano Club, buoyed by the success of this year's blackberry festival has announced a profit of $ 1,727.65. One hundred sixty-two frozen pies were sold and 260 pieces of pie and ice cream served. Congratulations to Sydney Massie and her workers — no small effort this, the third annual blackberry festival.

Other news Barbara and Bill Scoones report

seeing a parrot in their Burrill Road garden. Isn't this carrying this south end thing a big far folks? No reports of Arctic Tern here so far.

Allison Stafford, daughter of Bill and Phyl l is Stafford of Salishan resort is off to Britain. A committed horse lover, Allison is planning to study horses and horsemanship in a top-rated English school. Allison was one of Anne Scoones' first pupils at the Maple Styrup Riding School.

Meeting held A meeting of all those interested

in the performing arts was held in

the school library after the Galiano Singers' rehearsal on Thursday, October 5. The 36 people present agreed to co-operate and to pool talents and resources on island productions.

It is to be a loosely structured group. Contact with them can be made at present through the Galiano Singers — phone Ann Duncan 9-2487. People interested in lighting, directing and performing are needed. A British style pantomime of Cinderella is being prepared for production in the New Year by Geoff Inverarity and friends. This will doubtless use every island resource.

Residential fire causes blaze A weekend resident burning

without a permit over the Thanksgiving Day holiday caused a fire on Cain Drive last Tuesday evening.

School girls walking along Stur-dies Bay Road noticed the smoke. Neighbours investigated, and then called the South Galiano Fire Department.

By the time the seven firemen arrived at the scene (only minutes)

a stiff breeze had spread the fire in the dry grass and into some small fir trees.

Because the fire had burnt through the householder's water line, there was no water available on the site for immediate use by the neighbour. Firemen used 2500 gallons of water to quell the blaze and to make sure no hot spots remained in the dry October soil.

The resident will be asked topay

Abuse of water system means Mayne shortage

Mayne Island's Campbell-Bennett Bay water system is facing a critical water shortage.

Trustee Garth Nightingale is blaming islanders for "abusing the system." He claims people water their grass and hose down their cars, and blames much of the current shortage on the heavy Thanksgiving influx to Mayne.

Nightingale says one of the four wells in the Campbell-Bennett Bay system is already bone dry and the others are very low. It has been necessary this past week to shut off water to householders for several hours, in an attempt to conserve the remaining water.

"In the event of fire, we would have a serious problem here," Nightingale states. "Although last winter was very cold, there wasn't a great deal of rain and we've had very little moisture for the past four months."

Local water diviner Fred Bennett, Sr., who was born on Mayne and has lived here for some 75 years says one of his springs has gone dry for the first time in his lifetime.

"The earth is bone dry for some three feet down," he reported. "Whereas we used to be able to get water at a depth of 80 to 100 feet, now we have to drill to 200 and 300 foot depths to get water. "With an increasing number of people coming to the island, our water is decreasing annually."

Bill Sawyer, chairman of the Arbutus Water Company and Ernie Worral of the Village Point Water system both report ample water in their areas.

for this unscheduled and unnecessary exercise by the volunteer firemen, according to fire chief Williams. Williams says that although the fire season is nearing its end (October 15), the ground is still very dry and caution must be taken when burning leaves and garden refuse.

South Galiano residents who have not yet received their fire identification numbers can pick them up at the fire hall at the monthly book sale (Saturday, October 21), or from the fire chief—phone 2461.

North Galiano residents have already received their numbers.

Mayne fair is slated

Prints of Bob Borsos' Winter Beach scene, featured on the front cover of the Mayneliner, will be available at the upcoming annual Christmas Fan slated for November 25 and 26 at the Mayne Island school.

Sponsored by the island's Craftsmen's Guild, the popular event will feature the work of Mayne Island's accomplished craftspeople. It will include pottery, knitting, weaving, woodworking, toys, silk painting, and Christmas and colonial decorations.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Group should reflect several interests Can environment enthusiasts

remain non-partisan? This was the question posed by

Community Chamber of Commerce members on Mayne Island Thursday night, when they announced support for environmental responsibility. A preliminary meeting to discuss formation of a community environment committee

Mayne Island

was held last week. According to Chamber presi

dent Brian Crumblehulme, the proposed environment committee should consist of a dozen Mayne Islanders, representing a variety of interests and they should definitely be non-partisan.

Paul Bondarenko, however, said par t isanship can not be

avoided by envi ronment enthusiasts, since they may be confronted with business interests which are blatantly anti-environmental.

Crumblehulme said it would be the committee's job to bring in all possible information on an island proposal rather than take a stand on any issue, such as the proposed

Participating in the blackberry basket weaving class staged by Casey Wood of Orcas Island, at Galiano's Activity Centre on Monday, October 9, was well known Mayne Island craftswoman, Ann Simpson, who will again convene the annual Craftsman's Guild Christmas Fair.

Fortunate Mayne Island artists were par

ticularly fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn the art of silk painting from Bill Morton, well known instructor at Calgary's School of Art, who specializes in silk painting. In B.C. giving a course at the Pearson College of the Pacific, Morton's Mayne Island week-long course also brought three pupils from Calgary as well as one from Galiano.

Highlight of the week for participants was their exhibition of painted silk scarves.

Ed Williams, in charge of park development, reports the doors and ceiling of the new washrooms will be installed at the next volunteer work bee slated for October 28. He reports the necessity of excavating a pond to provide ample water to meet the needs of the park's ornamental trees.

Applications Marie Kelt, president of the

Mayne Island Branch #84, Royal Canadian Legion, reports widows of war pensioners, who up until now forfeited their late husband's war pension if they re-married, can now retain their pensions, following their husband's death, despite the fact they choose to remarry. She states that war veterans' widows should apply for same through their local DVA office.

Volunteers needed There will be no Scouts or Cubs

on Mayne Island this winter unless volunteers are forthcoming.

Locals challenge Victoria

Prospect Lake 5 \ Salt Spring 1 A strong offensive team, the

Prospect Lake Falcons travelled to Salt Spring last week to enjoy what they thought would be an easy romp over the Island local girls' side, the NRS Sting.

This team has been undefeated in years of league play, easily winning the league championship year after year, but Salt Spring's side was not prepared to simply roll over and play dead.

Although there are quite a few new players on the Sting this year, the backwall retains its experienced performers, Michelle Beitel is back as the Sting's sweeper and as usual, played a flawless game, including setting up the Sting's goal.

Jody Bradley and Marv Binkley are back and proved hard to beat on the back wall, and Candice Walde, who normally plays a midfield position has been moved back to stabilize the back wall. These four, as well as newcomer Jessica Ray and multi-purpose player Tracy Cunningham make up the Sting's defensive squad.

A (very pleasant) surprise starter, Stacy Proctor, was extremely active as the Sting's keeper, playing a strong first game back.

Initially, the Falcons out-hustled the Sting, but were beaten back by their defensive squad.

At the half, the score was 1-0. Fa l cons and the Sting were bolstered by their own effort

The Falcons scored quickly in the second half, twice, and the score was 3-0, but the Sting got some good chances also, and finally they scored, on a free kick from 30 yards out Michelle Beitel took the kick, hammering it to the top of the net The keeper got a hand on i t knocking it down but Irene Lam, rushing in from her wing position, controlled the rebound and pushed it past their keeper, into the net.

Now the Sting was excited. It pushed forward in an attempt to even the score, but although the team outplayed the Falcons in the last 20 minutes of the game, the Falcons, a more experienced team, took advantage of this situation, and scored two more goals before the final whistle blew.

An expensive place to meet

Each year, half of British Columbia's motor vehicle accidents happen at intersections. These intersection accidents took a toll of 13,000 injuries and more than 120 lives in 1987.

Even those of us who weren't directly involved were still hurt —because the costs of intersection accidents add to the premiums of all motorists in the province. Clearly, we've got to stop meeting like this.

That's why ICBC and police departments throughout the province have joined forces in a major program to combat B.C's crisis at the crossroads. The purpose of our 'Use Your Street Smarts" campaign is simply to remind drivers of some basic survival rules they may have forgotten in the rush to beat traffic:

• Don't run yellow, and especially red lights. • Stop tailgating: give the car ahead space to stop

suddenly. • Take it easy when entering any intersection,

especially when turning left. • If there's any doubt about the right-of-way yield

graciously • Avoid unsafe lane changes and illegal turns. If any additional reminder is required, extra police

enforcement will be watching intersections closely this fall.

• I C B C

Together, we can drive insurance costs down.

Local FC soccer team humbled against strong Victoria players

Salt Spring FC 11 Crownwest 4 By MALCOLM LEGG Salt Spring FC had its modest

two game unbeaten streak put to an end when they were humbled by Crownwest 4-1 last Sunday in Victoria.

Although Crownwest are a strong team and came up with a very strong performance, the FC team was in reality defeated before they stepped on the field.

As has happened in previous matches, the FC squad was short players: they had two substitutes available and three key defenders missing, and this time against a strong side it proved very costly.

Due to the missing defenders the team, once again, juggled their defence in the hope of containing the Crownwest attack, but try as they may the defence could not stop the onslaught.

Crownwest was a pumped up team and Ken Marr, in his flashy new goalie attire, was not able to stem the tide with his usual heroics.

By the half, FC was down 4-0 and the team dragged itself to the side-lines with the realization they had been out-hustled and outclassed in all facets of the game.

Fortunately FC players are not quitters and the lads regrouped and came back on the field with a realignment and the determination to make a game of it

The defence had settled down and finally FC's mid-field woke up and started to move the ball, espe

cially with Graham Emeridge pushing forward out ol the back wall.

The forwards started to make runs and the opportunities became apparent as FC poured into attack. Time and time again it looked like they might pull the game back, only to see the chances disappear due to poor finish.

Finally, late in the game, Johnny Villadsen scored from a scramble in front, off an Alan Webb corner, and FC had broken the goose-egg. It was too little too late, but it at least left the team with a good feeling about what they have to do next

week. It is very apparent though with a

team like FC that is not loaded with superstars, that the commitment of all the players is essential for the team to be able to play a full 90 minutes of soccer against the better teams in Division 3.

Until that commitment occurs the team will scrape by, but the results and improvement in play will not occur.

Next week we travel to Victoria to play our arch-rivals Elks 2.15 p.m. at Central Park.

Slugs speeding along The Salt Spring Slugs, a local hockey team, enjoyed two wins

during a successful road trip this past weekend. On Saturday night, they defeated Friscos Bar of Nanaimo 10 to

four in Nanaimo. The slugs were lead by the above average goal-tending of Mark Hughes for the win.

Goals came from Peter Huser with three, Gary Styles, three and singles from Pat Akerman, Paul Sinclair, Dave Moulton and James Cook.

On Sunday at their home rink, the slugs with remarkable net minding from Hughes beat the Duncan Oldtimers five to two. Goals game from Styles, two, Akerman, Todd Mclntyre and Moulton with one each.

This year the Slugs are not in a league due to the tough going, but will instead test the waters with various other teams (of their choosing).

So far the slugs have two wins, one loss and a tie. Honourable mention for their work on the weekend go to Pat

Wilkinson for his attempt at a brawl, Larry Wendel for bailing him out and Todd Mclntyre for slowing up Sunday's game.

GARBAGE TO HAUL OR NOT TO HAUL?

THIS IS THE QUESTION

The Blackburn Road landfill will not be closed bv the Ministry of the Environment L'NTiL an alternative method for garbage disposal has been accepted.

Blackburn Road receives an estimated 5600 tons of waste per year. The Hartland Road landfill is already running out of space for garbage - plans are underway to drain a lake and fill it with garbage!

We can't afford to clump our garbage problems on Saanich. There are other alternatives. We must take the time to explore them all and deal with our garbage problem ourselves!

a "YES" vote will mean: • a tax increase of about SI 20 per

$100,000 of assessed value in addition to the pick up charge and dumping fee at the transfer station

• tax dollars and jobs go off island

• control of our garbage goes to an international trucking firm

• we share responsibility and costs for cleaning up Hartland Road's problems

• recycling is discouraged because everyone must pav the same tax rate regardless of the amount of garbage the) produce

• garbage trucks on the fern

a "NO" vote will mean: • no tax increase

• local dollars will support local enterprise

• an island familv retains ownership of the business

• we remain independent of Hartland Road

• the user-pa v system now in place encourages people to re-use and re-cycle

• no garbage trucks on the ferry

Vote "NO" on October 21

Down the years

Thirty Years Ago How children can get to school

safely was the lead story in this week's edition of the Driftwood 30 years ago. That story leads with: "In a modern age of consolidated schools and school buses," it is a crime that our school buses must operate on horse'n'buggy roads."

The article goes on to say that not only are the roads narrow and visibility poor, but tree stumps and telephone poles sometimes sit in the middle. Says the story: "On most of the comers (bus driver Jack Smith) can not stay in his own lane for he must swing wide to avoid hitting stumps or trees or telephone poles with the back of the bus...someday there will be a school bus tragedy on the Beaver Point road it won't be the fault of the road crew boys who work on Salt Spring Island.

They do the best they can. The fault will be in Victoria where this modern government that gets things done has done nothing to make the school bus roads as modern as the vehicles that have to travel them."

Under Facts, Fables & Foibles this week comes the words: "there are two kinds of men who never amount to much: those who cannot do what they are told, and those who can do nothing else..."

Twenty-five Years Ago

Road conditions are still in the news. An editorial in this week's edition of the paper reads, "Last summer.. .we had one of this island's worst and most costly accidents, costing the life of one of the Island's citizens. The accident hap

pened on the exact site of several others in past years. The site has been recognized as probably the most dangerous stretch of road anywhere on this Island and there are others that run a close second.

At this particular point it is virtually impossible to be master of your own fate while driving, since so much depends on the judgement of the other driver coming the opposite way...Is the daily rush we run worth the saving of a few thousand dollars?"

On a more positive note, the firm of R. W. Siddal and Associates out of Victoria is appointed this week to plan and supervise the construction of a new high school on Salt Spring Island. Considered important is a large library and storage space. Also coining to the area is a physiotherapy room at the hospital.

Twenty Years Ago The 20-year-old edition of the

Driftwood is not available.

Fifteen Years Ago Desmond Crofton is appointed

Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of his old regiment, the Canadian Scottish. The story says that Crofton was one of the Salt Spring residents who "rallied to the call for reserve soldiers on a weekend basis. The majority of Salt Spring Island veterans, looking back to those who enlisted from the island, were with the Canadian Scottish.

The island platoon was 30 strong at one time and most of the recruits went overseas with the regiment. (Crofton) served with his regiment in eastern Canada and in England and was commanding officer when he was wounded and sent back to hospital from France."

Crofton becomes one of 200 "distinguished Canadian citizens

appointed as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonels and Colonels to Militia and Air Reserve units across Canada."

Vandals target the school's vice-principal. A brief this week says that on October 4, during a dance at the Gulf Islands Secondary School, the windshield of the car owned by Vice Principal Hugh Archer, was smashed. RCMP were notified and laid charges following a brief investigation.

Ten Years Ago A group of Salt Spring Island

residents plan to have a commercial laboratory conduct tests of eggs produced on the island to determine what level of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) they contain. The move comes after it was learned last week that local eggs tested by Agriculture Canada were found to contain "traces" of PCBs. The substance originated from a transformer damaged in Bil l ings, Montana and brought here in tallow, an ingredient used to make chicken feed.

B.C. Hydro denies arumourthat it put out tenders for the design of a nuclear power plant at Crofton. However, tenders were called for work to be done on the ferry terminal buildings at Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island. That job includes a major expansion of the terminal and the adding of new of-

with Driftwood fices, washrooms, lunchrooms and stairways.

Five Years Ago News about the Ganges com

munity sewer system covers almost four pages of this week's paper.

Under argument is whether the school board should contribute $245,000 toward the project to help defray costs to private property owners. The concern is that the contribution would affect future requests for other capital grants.

The Lady Minto Hospital board, in the meantime, is also asked by the Capital Regional District to contribute $549,054 to the project. But a front-page story in this edition of the paper shows that Salt Spring Islander and newsman Jack Webster put the-then Municipal Affairs Minister, Bill Ritchie, on the spot concerning the completion of the project.

"What are you going to do about this incredible botch-up waste of money and damnable confusion over the Ganges sewer?" Webster asked Ritchie on a news program. "We've spent over two and a half million or three million dollars on it. What are you going to do about the Ganges sewer?"

Replied the minister, "We're going to fix that up, Jack...I don't have the final answers here, but I can assure you that we're going to fix it up without any loss of time."
