Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane

By: Jimbo The cover is all about old cars.. left and forgotten, til this photo jogged a memory for us to remember just what that old car could mean to us. Old cars and trucks are the backbone of our

hotrod and classic vehicle interest. Today our vehicles have comforts the drivers of yesteryear could only imaging.

The builders of all that old iron were free to create and market their ideas. Something many take for granite today.

I feel that some in America don’t see the importance of remembering the past. I’m excited about the future too, but somehow I was able to hold on the values that my mentors passed along to me.

I’m pretty old now (white hair and all) and I still remember them old guys talking about the fighting days. WWII, Korea, and the like. They would always end up sayin ‘remember so-n-so?’ an then they would talk about his battle, and courage, and what he left behind so we could be free. “He paid the price!!” they said.

"Old Geezers" (slang for an old man) are easy to spot: At sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Geezers hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Geezers remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam.

If you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Geezers hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection.

Old Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth on TV or in movies. Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it's about their grandchildren.

It's the Old Geezers who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever.

I usta’ caddy on the week-end, to pick up a few bucks for the big date night. One time I overheard these two old Geezers who were golfing talkin’, one of them mentioned that he was going to go to Dr. Smith for a new set of dentures in the morning. His elderly buddy remarked that he; too, had gone to the very same dentist two years before. "Is that so?" asked the first old guy. "Did he do a good job?" The second oldster replied, "Well, I was on the golf course yesterday when a guy on the next fairway hooked a shot. The ball must have been going at least 200 mph when it smacked me right in the testicles." The first old guy was confused and asked, "What does that have to do with your dentures?" "It was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt....."

As usual time has run out and it’s the deadline to get this magazine off to the printer but, before I do I just want to say…..

I did get a chance to catch a few shows in April and some of the cruise-

ins. My thanks goes out to all for the kind words and encouragement to continue.

It’s all about havin’ fun and for most of us it’s good friends, good music, good food, kool cars and Great Cruizin’. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida offers some of the best cruising and shows the good ol’ U.S.A. has. And that’s why we are the Coast Cruizers.

Till next month… Jimbo

Neat Math Trick

I love math tricks and this one really works and will only take you about ten seconds!!! Amazingly it really works to reveal my all-time favorite movie. I'm pretty good at math, so I did it in my head, then on paper, and finally on a calculator just to confirm my numerical capabilities. Each time I got the same answer, and sure enough it IS my very favorite movie EVER!

DO NOT cheat. DO YOUR math, THEN compare the results to the list of movies at the bottom. You will be AMAZED at how scary true and accurate this test is

1. Pick a number from 1-9. 2. Multiply that number by 3. 3. Add 3. 4. Multiply by 3 again. 5. Your total will be a two digit number. Add the first and second digits together to find your favorite movie (of all time) in the list of 17 movies on page …..70

When you hear the words “Dressed and Pressed” what does it mean to you?

If you are a Po-Boy person you know what it is. One of the best places to get a po-boy that’s dressed and pressed is Fayard’s Grocery, Meat and Deli. I like the ham and cheese with a order of fries and a Barq’s root beer. The dressed part is meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato and lots of mayonnaise. Then you put it on a flat top grill and put a weight on top. Brown one side and then flip it over and do the other side.

Fayard’s makes 22 different Po-boys and you can get any of them dressed and pressed. They also have sandwiches, on the bun po-boys, dinner and seafood plates plus breakfast biscuits. Fayard’s also has a daily lunch special that changes daily.

Fayard’s is a gas station with a grocery store. The store has meat department the has fresh cut beef. If you want that special steak or chop check out the meats. These are not pre package meats so they are a little thicker that normal and may cost a little more but worth the price.

They have 10 special bundled meats. #2 special is 3lbs of each, sirloin tip steak, ground chuck pork chops chicken and 1lb of bacon for $46.95. Prices will very depending on the going market price.

Go by 2166 Pass Road in Biloxi and get a Po-boy. Open 6 days a week.

Till we eat again J. R.

My Daily Ride By: Diana Bellew

My husband and I had built a 1933 Ford pick up in 2012. After attending auto shows and seeing all the beautiful cars, I decided I would like to have one that I could drive everyday.

After months of searching ads and the internet, we found the perfect car for me. It had all the features I wanted, except for one. It was located in Detroit, Michigan. We traded phone calls with the owner and looked at lots of pictures. After some electronic magic and some cash, she was mine, but still in Detroit. It is a 1936 Chevy, 4-door sedan, bright red and pin striped with a painted mural on the rear, and black leather interior. The engine is a crate 350 Chevy with a 350 automatic transmission, a Nova rear end, power rack & pinion steering, power brakes, Mustang front end and American Mags.

Upon purchasing the car, we contacted a transport company to ship the car. Repeated phone calls for 3 weeks were made. Still no car. We had to change out plan because it was late No-vember and Detroit snow was coming. My husband and a friend hooked up a trailer and headed for Detroit. After a long drive, they arrived at the owners house and loaded the car. Luck was with them, arriving home with no problems.

My husband went through the mechanics, making some changes, added air conditioning and a heater.

When she was ready to use, I sold my Maxima and started driving my 36 on a regular basis. Every time I drive it, I feel like I’m at a car show because there is always someone checking her out.

My youngest rocking her atomic blast tee.... Robby Stanley

April 11, 2014 By Justin Hyde - Motoramic

The difference between a treasure trove and a scrap yard may just be good marketing. How else to explain the interest generated by a Oklahoma man who closed his junkyard over a zoning dispute in 1953 and protected it like the Fort Knox of rust until his death? Later this summer, his cache of some 250 cars from the first half of the 20th century will finally go to auction, and within all that broken-down metal rest a few true rarities.

Handled by Vanderbrink Auctions, the firm that staged last year's madhouse sale of the Lambrecht family in Nebraska, the collection of Oliver Jordon doesn't have anything to compare to a five-mile Chevy kept new since 1966. Jordon bought a scrap yard in Enid, Okla., in 1945, and when the city asked him to alter the property for zoning reasons, Jordon just closed up instead, surrounding the property with barbed wire and attitude.

Jordon kept adding vehicles here and there, but he never sold any. His grandson built a few sheds to protect some of the stash from the weather eating the rest away, and after Jordon died in 2004, his widow tried selling some of them individually. When those deals fell through, the family decided to go to auction.

No cars in the group will draw more attention than a pair of Cords — a 1936 and a supercharged 1937. Fully restored examples of these front-wheel-drive classics can fetch $200,000, but the dire condition makes their values harder to pin down. Other rarities include a 1939 Lincoln seven-passenger sedan — one of the few rust-free cars in the mix thanks to its aluminum body — along with what may be only the fourth known surviving example of a 1924 Rollin Touring sedan, the product of a little-known Ohio automaker.

The rest of Jordon's empire of dirt holds some promise for those hardy hot-rodders who can see past the rust and weeds for just the right spare part or chassis. What's not sold at the June 7 auction in Enid will go the route of many other scrapyards in middle America, recycled back into metal for the rest of the world.

Layman's Ten Commandments 1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout the journey.

2 So why is a Car's WINDSHIELD so large and the Rear View Mirror so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So Look Ahead, and Move on. 3 Friendship is like a BOOK: It takes a few minutes to burn, but it takes years to write. 4 All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either. 5 Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold! 6 Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, My Child, it's just a bend in the road.... not the end! 7 When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn't solve your problems, HE has faith in your abilities. 8 A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision!" 9 When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you. 10 WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE.

We've  been  to  every  Swamp  Stomp  car  show  for  4  years straight  with  the  1st  one  getting  to  know  the  "Boneyard Kreepers"  car  club  and  what  they  are  about.  The  Friday night before the shows was always a time for the local club to  let  out  some  built  up  excitement  &  meet  up  with  the members & show off the progress on their rides. This year was  the  first  to  include  "Bike  Night"  put  together  by Tracey  Plaisance.  Hundreds  of  bikes  could  be  seen  and surely heard in the darkness as they made their way to the covered  area.  Preparations  were  already  made  for  the Saturday and this was a chance for the car club and friends to get together with the Civic Center board of directors & just scope out the motorcycles, relax and unwind.           It  was  7am  on  Saturday  March  8th  &  Rats&CatsKustoms

photography club was awake early getting last preparations done  for  the  haul  to  the  Swamp  Stomp  5  car  show  at  the Larose  Civic  Center.  It  wasn't  a  typical  morning  in southern Louisiana as the sun was just as eager to see the day as we were. The clovers were swaying their patches of green in the morning chilly breeze as we pulled up to the show  grounds.  Open  headed  rat  rods  &  colorful  custom  cars slowly made their way inside to find a spot to park. Just like the last four shows, there were an abundance of cars, trucks and bikes already settled shinning in the sun as we looked  around  unloading  our  camera  equipment.  The  vendors were  up  and  at  'em  cooking  &  icing  down  the  drinks  with Kirk  Curole  &  family  (owners  of  Cajun  Hibachi)  spreading the aroma of fried rice in the air as well as Jasmine, one of  the  Civic  Center  board  of  directors  getting  drinks cooled down for the spectators and admiring the turnout.  Bobby Pitre (member of the Boneyard Kreepers) was setting

up his hand made trophies to be given out later in the day, along  with  his  1936  Ford  rat  rod  coupe  which  was  to  be raffled off to the public by the Boneyard Kreepers to raise money for the Make‐a‐Wish foundation.  Photographers from different magazines were walking around

mingling and admiring the event as well as our good friend Denise Cobb of "Neecy Knight Photography" who as well as us could hardly stay focused with the custom rides in the back ground stealing our attention.       After  the  meet  and  greet  was  done,  we  ate  and  drank  a

little so we wouldn't pass out from the excitement, then it was time to do what we did best. The girl models started to show up one by one in various colored vintage style dresses & other cool outfits showing off their unique styles, so we fetched  a  few  of  them  and  started  taking  photos  of  their beauty  with  different  types  of  cars  and  custom  machines. The  cool  breeze  &  cloudy  weather  was  just  too  perfect  to describe & made our work less stressful. The "Cajun Roller Girls"  from  Houma  La.  were  skating  around  showing  their always  great  personalities  and  promoting  their  sport  and getting people interested in their upcoming events.  "3G  Fabrications"  (a  custom  bike  building  club)  had  the

we've ever seen. Pinstripe artists were on hand decorating cars  and  trucks  with  other  like  minded  car  painters  & graphic designers showing their support and knowledge.     What really caught our attention the most was the many

different  types  of  custom  rides  and  car  clubs  from  far distances. Like any car show, you will normally see custom car styles flock together and hang out within their zones, but  when  you  walk  past  a  collection  of  super  tuners  & bagged trucks, you have to adjust your vision to a couple of monster trucks with all the creators talking together and soaking up information on their own style and building skills.  Bringing  car  builders  together  from  different styles really lets you appreciate the unique passion these people have in what they do.      With the whole event in full swing and every square inch

of the grounds filled with rides and groups of spectators, it was time to make our way to the dirt drag strip. The number  of  onlookers  was  incredible  along  with  the  many types  of  vehicles  ready  to  get  down  and  dirty.  The announcements were made & the flag girl got into position to start this wild event. When the flag dropped, the dirt and mud flew! 4x4 trucks were side by side cutting it up, rat rods, 4‐wheelers, and even muscle cars were speeding down  the  track.  The  monster  trucks  along  with  a  1,750+ horse  powered  machine  with  tank  tracks  was  in  the  far ground doing donuts and shooting chunks of dirt in the sky making the kids in the safety area jump up and down with excitement.  When  the  loud  machines  stopped,  you  could still hear the eco of the engines through the trees.

After it was all over, the mud drenched drivers and sweaty  dirt  track  participants  made  the  long  stroll back  to  the  covered  area  for  much  needed refreshments...  but it wasn't over.      The  pinup  model  contest  had  many  entries  with  more

Cars were produced in more than 40 cities within Indiana. The largest of the manufacturers was the Studebaker Company. They produced their first vehicle in 1901. On October 23, 1933 John

Dillinger used a 1932 Studebaker Commander as a getaway car during the robbery of $75,000 from the Central National Bank in Greencastle, Indiana. The company continued making automobiles until they closed in 1963, after more than 60 years in the automobile business. Another famous automobi le company in Indiana was the Cole

Motor Car Company. It started in Indianapolis in 1909 and closed in 1925. The Cole Company gave the first automobile in the history of the U.S. presidency to William Taft. Located in the 700 block of East Washington Street, Joseph Jarrett Cole (1869-1 9 2 5 ) p r o d u c e d a “standardized car”, one which competed with the prestigious General Motors Cadillac. General Motors used only G.M. parts, while f o u n d e r J . J . C o l e assembled his with parts f r o m v a r i o u s

You think English is easy? Homographs are words of like spelling but with more than one meaning. A homograph that is also pronounced differently is a heteronym. This took a lot of work to put together! I think a retired English teacher was bored...

1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture.. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. 8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. 10) I did not object to the object. 11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid. 12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. 13) They were too close to the door to close it. 14) The buck does funny things when the does are present. 15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. 16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. 17) The wind was too strong for me to wind the sail. 18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.. 19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. 20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'? You lovers of the English language might enjoy this. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

Thinking of the early automobile, you likely picture Henry Ford, the Model T, and Detroit, but did you know that Indiana was one of the leaders in Automobile production until the 1930’s when Detroit emerged as the nation’s technological and industrial giant? Elwood Haynes claims to have produced America’s first car in Kokomo, Indiana in 1894, testing it the Fourth of July on Pumkinvine Pike for a mile and a half. Top speed: 7 miles per hour! By 1916 his company had sold more than 7,000 cars.

A Review of Primers for Automotive Restoration The first step to a durable, long lasting automotive finish is choosing

the correct primer for your paint job's foundation. With so many primer options available it's often confusing which primer system is best suited for your restoration project. Here is a quick overview of the common types used in restoration and repair in restoration shops around the world.

Epoxy Primer … A good two part epoxy primer is your best choice for bare metal to provide excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance. Urethane Primer Surfacer ... Two part urethane primer surfacers, or primer filler, as they are sometimes called fills and sands better than epoxy but does not have as good of corrosion resistance/adhesion to bare metals as epoxy therefore they are often used over epoxy primer to provide the best performance as a system. Polyester Primer Surfacer ... Excellent build when you can't always get your body work as well as you would like. However, polyester surface is often more brittle and prone to crack over time than polyurethane surfacers. Urethane Sealer ... Urethane sealers are not the best choice for filling, sanding, or direct to bare metals but do provide a nice foundation for applying topcoat color over if the item you are painting is already in good shape or you have a lot of filler primer and bodywork to seal off. Often available in bright colors to help with coverage on more transparent color like bright yellows, and reds. Acid Etch Primer ... Etch primers provide good direct to metal adhesion and corrosion but generally not as good as corrosion resistance as epoxy primer. However, etch primer is faster than epoxy so it is frequently used in collision repair to improve through put. Epoxy primer is used more often on bare metals than etch primer in restoration work. Lacquer Primer ... Lacquer Primer is great for speed and sanding but not so good for long term durability. Shrinkage, cracking, and bubbling are common long term problems associated with lacquer primer. Enamel primers/sealers ... Enamel primers are economical and provide fair sealing/corrosion resistance but can be susceptible to lifting/wrinkling with some systems. Moisture Cure Urethane ... Moisture Cure urethane primers are great for adhesion and rust protection on pitted metals where rust can not be completely removed.

manufacturers. Cole cars were the first to include four-door bodies, demountable rims, motor driven tire pumps, streamlined bodies, and balloon tires, all standard equipment. They were also the first to mount electric lights and utilize a self-s ta r te r . Pr ices were expensive, though, ranging from $1995 to $3795 for the various models in 1918. Cole had a car in the first race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1911. Some of their vehicles could reach a top speed of 65 miles per hour.

Indiana was a significant player in the development of the automobile. More than 400 automobiles, trucks, and cyclecars with various names can claim Indiana production or assembly, which accounts for more than 8% of the approximate 5,000 vehicle names produced in the United States. In 1909, Indiana was the second largest producer of the nation’s automobiles, following first place Michigan. David L. Lewis notes in The Automobile in American Culture that until 1905, Indianapolis, Indiana contained more auto plants than any city in Michigan. Indiana auto companies were small and became known for producing hand assembled, high-class, and high-priced cars. The well-known cars of Duesenberg, Cord, Stutz and Cole fell into this category, appealing to the upper end of the consumer market, thus limiting their sales. The economic recession in the early 1920’s caused the population to become increasingly interested in less-expensive autos that were mass produced. The Great Depression of the 1930’s finished off most of the manufacturers. One exception was Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana. It has been debated over the years as to who actually built the first American automobile. In the age we live in today where news from all over the world is just a click away, some may find it hard to understand that back in the late 1800’s it was difficult for information to be gathered quickly or even consistently. The information contained in this article is as accurate as I can determine. Uncle Ezra says: A conclusion is the place where you get tired of thinking…

I’m  driving  “Precious”  (my  300 ZX)  down  Beach  Blvd  in  Bay  St. Louis,  MS,  headed  for  Biloxi,  MS.  it’s about 30 miles down the coast, but  the  windows  are  down,  and  the fresh salt air is coming in off the Gulf! There  is  nothing  like  salt  air  to

clear the champagne cobwebs out from the night before (right girls)?  Of course you guys never get hung over right?  The reason I’m headed for Biloxi is due to the fact

that there are no malls in Bay St. Louis, Waveland and we  are  going  out  to  dinner  and  I  not  going    to  find anything to wear at Walmart.  So  back  to  salt  air  and  the  great  breeze  coming  in

the windows. Way back when I met “Mr. Right”  (Larry) he  had  all  these  strange  places  he  thought  were “great”, and I should see them and hear the bands etc, etc.  So, the salt air brought back Hawaii of course, but

it  also  made  me  remember  one  of  the  great  places  he took me to in Southern, Calif. (We were living in Santa Monica at the time.) One Saturday afternoon Larry walks in  our  condo  and  says  “get  the  heels  (4”)  and everything that goes with it, were going to see Harry

James tonight”!   I’m not sure how many of you remember Harry James, he

died in 1987 and was one of the great trumpet players of  all  time.    He  was  married  to  Betty  Grable  for  22 years  and  they  owned  several  “stake”  horses,  winning several big races at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles, CA.  So  we  go  downstairs  (from  the  16th  floor  on  the

beach) and jump into our 1969 El Camino, (fire engine red) 383 stroker (what ever that means) and drive down to Los Angeles Harbor.  I look at Larry & say “is he playing  on  the  “Queen  Mary””?    (It  is  permanently parked  there,  restaurants,  ball  room,  several  shops etc.)  “No”,  says  Larry,  “were  catching  a  boat  over  to

Catalina  Island  and  he  is  playing  at  the  Avalon Ballroom.    This  is  all  new  to  me,  the  only  island  I know  or  cared  bout  was  Hawaii.  This  Catalina  Island, how far out is it? (I ask)  “Oh probably 20 miles or so, takes about an hour to

get there, but don’t worry, plenty of things to eat and drink on the “boat”.   This was my first boat trip, we always flew back and

forth when we lived in Hawaii.

by: Lynn Makua

So,  we  arrive,  and  its  July,  very  warm  and comfortable, we get on an open shuttle to get to the ballroom.  It takes about 5 or 10 minutes and we are at the ballroom. Larry has tickets (where he got them or how I don’t know) The vocalist was Helen Forrest, this  was  after  Harry  James  had  brought  Frank  Sinatra into the big time. We had a great time, you (me) could tell  Helen  was  really  “gone”  on  Harry,  but  Betty Grable was the lady and his wife at the time.  So  after  dancing  (and  yes  drinking)  we  board  the

boat and headed back to LA Harbor.  We land and jump into the El Camino and start for Santa Monica.   Now its July, probably 72 degrees out, 2 a.m. and we

pull  up  to  a  red  light.    Sure  enough,  up  pulls  a mustang  convertible  with  4  guys  in  it.  The  driver looks over and say “is that rig as fast as it looks?”  Larry  says  “yep”  and  the  light  turns  and  we  left

them. So  much  for  LA,  lets  talk    about  my  beach  boys  in

Waikiki Beach.   My  Uncle  Blue  Makua  Sr.  was  said  to  have  great anticipation, great feel.  He could make a canoe slide through  the  surf.    Where  does  the  anticipation  come from?  It comes from the seat of your pants.  You feel it.  It’s  an indefinable quality, like smelling the wind,  a  communion  with  the  ocean  that  is  subtle  and yet so profound.  The  photo  you  see  is  circa  1946  portrait  of  Waikiki beach boys, taken at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel seawall, and appeared on the cover of Honolulu Magazine’s 1982 Holiday Annual. (top left is uncle blue) One  more thing:   For  all you who  do not live in  Bay St.  Louis,  Waveland,  MS.    A  new  place  has  opened  in

Waveland.   OBE  PORT‐OF  CALL  (general  store).    The  official  hot spot for the Waveland Beach area this summer. Whether you  need  groceries,  bait,  beer,  or  the  latest  e‐cigs and vapors. This would be a fun drive.   They are up from  my  favorite  Tri‐R‐Bar  and  Grill    (who  make  the best Margarita’s in town) on Colemen Ave. Watch next month for some of my old and new places!

S ome are in wheel

chairs, most are dead, none of

my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them.

The newspapers called him “Little George” Amick, which no fellow racer, (that includes all members of the racing fraternity) ever called him “Little George”.

He was a couple of years older then me, born Oct. 1924 on April 4th. We didn’t like each other. We had both served in WWII as did a great majority of race car drivers in the 1940’s.

George stood about 5’ 5” and probably went 125 lbs, which was a big advantage in the midgets. Most drivers myself included, were from 145 to 160.

George hated running against Ford V-8-60’S due to the problem many owners had trying to keep the flat heads cool. Lots of them puked water out the over-flow hose when they reached 240 degrees, George ran mostly pavement tracks in the North West and you all know how slippery asphalt gets when wet! All of you know today’s NASCARS run at 250`, but if you have the right pressure it’s OK.

Mitch you can put this in your records, for every 3 pounds of pressure in the radiator can you can go 1 degree hotter in temp without boiling. This comes from Jake Possell who was a Nikola Tesla believer. So, when NASCAR cars boil the announcer says they have reached 250 degrees and the pop-off valve lets go!

As I have mentioned before, I ran my temperature sensor in the bottom radiator tank. My gage never ran over 180` Jake devised (invented) a water pump that Chip Ganarsi uses on his Indy 500. Chassis and Nascar stocks and probably still does. (This was back in the 1980’s, Jake died in 1986.)

When I was with the #41 dirt car at the Indy 500, (last dirt car to make the program). I saw George trying to get a “ride”, but the owners weren’t ready for him yet.

So we both returned to the west coast, for midget racing was still going strong, but USAC had taken over from AAA and the record shows George 56,57,58 and finished in the top 10 every year.

This brings us to 1957 and my friend J. C. Aggajanian decided to run the “Turkey Night” race at Gardena (Western Speedway it was known of in those days.) This California dirt track was ¼ mile, small, hi banked corners and very fast!

“Turkey Nite” is the race of the year for midgets. Its 1957 the purse is $5000.00 and 28 cars in the feature (main event).

So I look at Harold Miller, my pal and chief mechanic after Clay Smith died, and said “its 125 laps Harold, can we make it running pop? (Nitro)

“yep” Harold says, (he also owned Miller Crankshaft company in Bellflower) “but we best use the “new” crank and 3 angle the valve seats plus dyno at wilcap to jet for 10% pop”. …..Well 105 midgets showed up from every where! You get the pits and at the gate is the official with a brown bag full of pills with 100 numbers. You reach in the bag pull a number and that when you qualify.

I go up to official he is holding the bag, and it just happens to be a midget owner in URA that I used to drive for, before I bought my own Kurtis Kraft. I reached for the bag, he smiled, pulled the bag back, and handed me a pill! It had #22 which was a perfect number to go out! I said “thanks Joe” and he replied “give’em hell with that Ford kid!”

The URA was the Ford circuit, and I knew what he meant! It was perfect, I had 8th quick out of 100 or so midgets. We ran 25% pop to qualify, 3 laps.

www.CoastCruizers.com 17 MAY 2014

So George (Amick) has quick time, wins the 4 car trophy dash and starts last in the final main event heat. I’m in the front row pole, and I’m in there with the 7 fastest of the night. They drop the flag, and a V-8 60 has 129 inches until you go .100 over bore and .100 on the stroke, known as 100X100 takes you up to 136 inches or so. The Offies (I’m the only Ford all night) can’t touch the “flathead off the line”. So, I’m leading the first 4 laps, when I get “smacked” on

my rear bumper, as I go into the turn! (you don’t win races banging into people). It was George and in the next turn he bangs me again. So I give him the finger (the middle one) and I made the next corner and he went by on the high grove and won the heat race (6 laps).

I pull into the pits unsnap my seat belt, and here comes George pulling off his helmet! That means trouble! It isn't like today where they poke each other in the chest (with helmets on).

So, while I’m climbing out I pull off my helmet, stand up next to George, (he came up to my Adams Apple) and I’m ready. I’m 6 ft. go 156 in those days and plenty fit. He says “you had no right to give me the finger”

“yes,” I said “I stand corrected”. He says “what does stand corrected mean? “ “It means I never should have done it because of the crowd”, but the

next time you “boot” my back basket, I’ll stand on the brake and put your ass in the wall.”

He looked puzzled, and said, “no more fingers” and I said “As long as you go around and not thru me”.

George won the 125 lapper that night, passed every car on the track! I finished 8th with many Offies behind me. George went on to Indy in 1958 and finished 2nd in the 500 to Jimmy Bryan.

In 1959 he was killed at the 100 mile race at Daytona for Indy Cars. Bob Christie another Northwest race car driver, was running 2nd and George was 3rd, on the last lap George made a try to “win it or wear it”, and die on the back straight! He wore it.

"Skyla" Devious Girl #2

She made it to Mississippi with the help of her wonderful Mother. They took off early

Friday morning in the van, and checked into the hotel right at 3:00 p.m. Skyla was tired. She didn’t sleep much the night before. All she could think about was Sam. Does she really love him? She couldn’t help but wonder if she loved him, or just loved him for his car. She didn’t have time to worry about that right now. She needed some rest. She had to look good for the photographers tomorrow. If she pushed it and went to the show tonight, she would look terrible in her photos.

Morning came fast. Skyla set the alarm early so that she had enough time to shower, dress and do her hair and makeup. She and her Mom had gone to the outlet mall after they checked into the hotel yesterday. She bought a really cute hat to wear with her dress today. She was going to be in the pinup contest and she had to look her best! It was hard to contain her excitement, as she looked in the mirror to check out her work.

Skyla and her Mother ate a quick breakfast and headed to the Atomic Blast car show. They arrived on the grounds to see a giant “bomb” adver-tising the “rules” for the show. In all essence, there wasn’t any rules! They parked the van in a shady spot and walked to the huge tent, so that she could register for the pinup contest.

There were already a lot of rat rods, and hot rods there. They were parked on the grounds, racing on the track and doing donuts in a marked off area off of the parking lot. Skyla scanned the crowds looking for the photographer that was supposed to take her photo. She didn’t see her, so she and her Mom began to mill about.

They first came across a nice, older man named Tommy. He told her that he owns a 1981 Peterbuilt, camper rat rod and he offered to show it to her. She obliged and enjoyed listening to him chat about where he found the body of his ride and what made him decide to build a “camper” out of the parts he had. He was adorable and she was sure he was enjoying her company. He even tried to get her in the back of the camper at one point. (to drink coffee!)

Next she saw a really cool hot rod with pink accents. She sure would like to have that gem. Since Sam lost his Nova, she felt lost

without a hot car to ride in and take pictures with.

She and her Mom continued to explore the grounds when Skyla noticed Sam out of the corner of her eye. She then saw a group of guys standing around a rat rod truck. She quickly headed in their direction knowing that Sam could see her. “Hi guys!” she said as she walked up to them.

“Would you mind if I checked out your ride?” she said.

“Hey pretty lady!” one of the guys said. “Go right ahead,” Skyla walked around the rat sliding her hand over the metal as the guys and Sam looked on. “I really love your ride!” said Skyla.

“Thanks, you are more than welcome to sit in her” said the apparent owner.

“Great!” said Skyla, as she slid into the passenger seat. She eyed Sam shaking his head as he started to walk in the other direc-tion. Skyla smiled and thought to herself that, yes she still loved Sam and she wanted to make him jealous and regretful that he lost their car. Yes! Their car! It had always been theirs. She modeled with it, and he drove it. It was as if they were a team in that car. Now it was gone, and the team had broken up. She shook herself out of her day dream and con-tinued to chat with the guys. As she was chat-ting, she finally saw the photographer she had been waiting on.

“Well guys, I have to go get my photo taken. It was nice talking to you all!”

“Awe!” said the guys all at once. “Come back after” said one of the gents.

“I will” said Skyla. As she got up, with the aid of one of the men of course, wiped herself off and headed toward the photographer.

“Hey!” Skyla yelled as she chased after the photographer. “I’ve been looking for you!”

“Hi there!” said the photographer. “I’ve also been looking for you! Lets get to some rat rods so I can get some great photos of you with them!”

Skyla, her Mom and the photographer headed toward a group of cars and selected a couple for Skyla to pose with. The photog-rapher snapped several photos with her and the rat rods. “Great job!” said the photographer.

“Thank you so much!” said Skyla. Her heart was beating and she was gleaming with excitement. She knew that, that photogra-pher would send her photos in, to possibly be in a magazine. Oh how she hoped that the editor of the magazine would pick at least one of her pictures to be published!

“Ok, I’ll see you around” said the photographer. “I have a lot of coverage to do.”

“Ok” said Skyla. “Thank you again.” She watched as the pho-tographer ran to catch a couple of girls for photographs, secretly hoping that the magazine editor would choose her over them for publication.

“Let’s go Mom.” Sklya and her Mother walked around the

show some more. Her feet were beginning to hurt, and she pondered the idea of walking around barefoot. She better not, because you never know when someone may want to take her photo. She wan-dered over to another nice ride and met up with a man named Den-nis.

“Hey there cutie!” said Dennis.

“I’m with ya!” said Sam. They walked away together towards the big tent in unison, looking forward to the rest of the evening together.

~All characters and events in this story (even those based on real people, with their real names) are entirely fictional. The “Atomic Blast” car show was real. If you missed it this year, mark it on your calendar for next!

“Hi yourself” said Sklya in a flirtatious way. “Can I get a photo with you?” said Dennis. “Of course” said Skyla. As she was talking to Dennis, she felt like

someone was watching. She looked over Dennis’s shoulder and sure enough, there was Sam standing there with his arms crossed. “Here we go” thought Skyla.

She really began to lay it on thick to Dennis, as Sam was watching. A friend of Dennis’s snapped a few photos with his camera phone, and Dennis gave her a hug to thank her for posing with him. He walked away and Skyla’s Mom came up to her and said, “Skyla, Sam has been watching you all day!”

“I know Mom.” “Skyla, you still love him don’t you, and I feel that he still loves

you. Don’t let a car come between you guys!” “But Mom, it’s not just a car, it was our car. It was our life style.” “Skyla, you are both still in the life style. You are both here!” Skyla knew her Mom was right. She always was. “Ok, I’ll go talk to

him Mom.” “Good for you. I am going to go get something to eat, come and find

me after.” “Yes ma’am.” said Skyla. Sam kept his eyes on her as she approached him. “I see you are

getting a lot of attention here arent’ you.” “Yes Sam, but you should know that I was doing it on purpose.” I

was trying to make you jealous.” “Well, it’s working Skyla. I do still love you, you know?” “Oh Sam, I still love you too! I’m so sorry I let your car come be-

tween us!” She jumped into his arms and they hugged and kissed until they had to come up for air.

“Skyla, I have to tell you something” said Sam. “Uh oh! What is it?” said Skyla expecting the worse. “I got my Nova back!” “You did?” “When?” “How?” “The night after the race, I approached Rodney and asked for a

rematch. I had my dad’s rat rod, and asked him if I could race again with the rat to win my car back. Rodney laughed and told me sure. He didn’t think my dad’s rat could beat his Camaro. He didn’t know what kind of power the rat has in it. He was just looking at all of the rust on the body. We raced and I beat him, and got my Nova back!” “Oh Sam!” said Skyla! “I’m so happy!” “Guess what else Skyla?” “What?” “Now the Nova is yours!” “I won Rodney’s Camaro, so I’m giving you my Nova since you love it so much and I’m keeping the Camaro!” “Oh my gosh Sam! I’m so happy! I got you back plus our Nova!” “Yay!” Skyla and Sam continued to hug and kiss and walked together to tell her Mom the good news. “I’m so happy for you both” she said. “Now I think they are calling for the pinup girls to go to the tent for the competition” “Let’s go” said Skyla.

We  are  deep  into  spring  and  I'm  already  feeling nostalgic. For time not too long ago when one awesome movie  after  another  came  from  the  Hollywood  movie making  machine.  I'm  talking  about  last  January, February what happened! Last month was a pretty dry run for interesting phones I was able to find a couple of good  comedies  and  one  that  will  go  down  the  record books  as  one  of  the  worst  movies  I've  paid  money  to watch!‐‐‐‐‐‐First up is a cool dark comedy titled Bad Words.  This  rated  R  offering  was  written  by  Andrew Dodge and directed by Jason Bateman who also stars in it.    This  slightly  deviant  but  hilarious  movie  is  a must‐see for all who enjoy smart, original scripts. The story is about a man, for reasons unknown, enters the national spelling bee contest. He finds a loophole in the rules and is allowed to compete against children. The  fun  begins  when  he  goes  to  any  extreme  method, Including  psychological  torture,to  defeat  his  younger opponents.  I  got  a  bit  squeamish  when  they  went  way past  the  boundaries  of  good  taste  with  inappropriate sexual situations With underage actors. I'm not saying it  wasn't  funny  just  maybe  a  little  too  much‐‐‐‐‐The funniest part about this original movie is that it's a buddy film. About two guys bonding, one maybe 12 years old  the  other  well  over  40,  in  the  quest  to  be  the spelling bee champion. Young actor Rohan Chand does a great  job  Going  to  tell  abatements  character  and  one hilarious  inappropriate  situation  after  another.  You might  also  recognize  actress  Catherine  Hahn  who  plays Batemans lawyer, Who has her own crazy baggage that she brings along for the ride.‐‐‐A smart script and a well directed, quick moving plot, makes This is a must see for  all  who  enjoy  and  edgy  comedy.  There  is  a  good story twist and you don't see coming Which makes this a solid well down film. I give this dark comedy 7 out of 10 pics ‐‐Next up is a movie I've been waiting a long time to see, The Grand Budapest Hotel. This film is written and directed by Wes Anderson. I'm a big fan of his work and was  not  disappointed  with  his  latest  opus!  ‐‐‐‐This rated R comedy stars so many A‐list actors I would need another  magazine  to  list  them.  Here  are  a  few  of Hollywood's best who probably work for scale just to be in Wes's cast of regulars. Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, F Murray  Abraham,  Adrien  Brody,  Bill  Murray.‐‐‐‐‐The script is about a wonderful hotel who has seen better days. The hotel guest from present and past intertwine in hilarious scenarios. The movie is told in narration style which helps you follow the plot because there's a lot  going  on.  Wes  Anderson's  attention  to  detail  and fine, stylized cinematic style is a must see for anyone who enjoys a story told in a very different, original and  interesting  way.‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐The  main  story  of  the film is about a Concierge, played by Ralph Fiennes, and his love for money and very older women that gets him in  trouble  with  the  law,  the  mob,  the  hotel.  He  is forced to take on an intern who quickly learns the ins and  outs,  pun  intended,  of  this  superstar  in  the Concierge world. ‐‐‐‐Some Moviegoers might not care for or  understand  this  interesting  take  on  movie

This column begins our 4th year writing 17 FOREVER…I wondered when I starting writing 17 FOREVER if I could sustain writing a column every month and the discipline it took to make it happen. I now know it’s not so easy and you have to have commitment to your readers regardless of what’s going on in your life. I enjoy the process. Time to get ready for our next car show… which is the Pine Hill Festival Car Show in Wiggins, MS. While Wiggins was not a long haul, I get ready the same way each time the Hot Rod Show hits the road. I‘ve had racers that pull long distances tell me for years that air pressure was the most important issue when pulling a heavy trailer out of town. Most trailer tire blowouts happen because of a lack of air pressure in one or more tires that put undue pressure on that particular tire. I developed a best practice procedure for dealing with this issue. I overinflate each trailer tire the night before and then reduce each tire down to the perfect air pressure the next morning when the tires are cold. For this trip it saved me a tire and possibly an expensive rim, because you don’t always know right away when you have a blow out on a trailer. Normally you’ll feel something and see bits of tire flying before you realize you have a problem, possibly ruining your tire and rim. I got up at 5:30 am Saturday morning March 22, for the Pine Hill Festival Car Show. I decided I would go immediately out in my pajamas and let the air out of the tires so I could then take my shower without getting dirty before heading out to the show. I get to the 2nd tire and my gauge reads 20 psi. 20 psi…I’m still half asleep so I check it again, 20 psi, oh no, panic…then I hear air escaping, the valve stem is bad. I received two spare tires with the new trailer, one with a standard rim and one with a fancy rim, but I left the tire with the fancy rim in the storage where I store the trailer about 5 miles away and I didn’t want to put the plain rim on the trailer, unless I had to. So I hop in my wife’s SUV still in my pj’s to go get the fancy spare tire. So, I get the tire, drive back, change the tire out and finish checking the remaining tires. That best practice procedure saved me at least a tire, if not a tire and rim, so for that I’m thankful. The Pine Hill Festival Car Show is an incredible show. Charlie Farmer, Terry Webb and rest of the Red Creek Classic’s Car Club are a great group of people that work hard to make a good show come together. They are aided by The Pine Hill Festival that attracts thousands of people. This year the show drew about 153 classic cars. I love the small town layout of the festival and car show, it really has a good feel to it. There was good energy with the show which means everyone had a good time! The Red Creek guys had plenty of door prizes we gave away on the 50/50 tickets and we blew away their previous high for their 50/50 jackpot of $800. This year the jackpot was over $2,600 with a young single mother that bought one ticket taking home over $1,300... over three times their biggest jackpot. Anytime the Red Creek Classics Car Club has a show, you know it’s going to be a good one. Their next show is also one of my favorites, it’s held Saturday August 16 at Flint Creek Water Park. All anyone pays is just a couple of dollars for park entry and the club cooks free hamburgers and hotdogs for all the car guys. Flint Creek is beautiful place for a car show, always a good turnout and a great show. This month features two of my favorite car shows…first, Burning Up the Beaches in Ft. Walton Beach, FL May 2-3. This show is one of the greatest values in car shows. Cruising car stops during the day Friday, they feed you Friday night and give you an incredible Dueling Grand Pianos Show and then Saturday the car show with incredible cars, Saturday night a dinner buffet, a band playing the oldies and a $2,000 drawdown. I understand Dream Rides on MAV TV is scheduled to be there, plus Velocity channel, Lokar Car Show. This show draws very nice cars and nice people also. The energy level is high during the entire show. The Hot Rod Show will be playing all day Saturday and of course there will be a Mega 50/50 jackpot.

The show is held in beautiful Vidalia River Park and you see every inch of the river. Friday night the cruise lineup is a 4:30 pm. Saturday the car show. The Hot Rod Show will be playing the music. I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 75 or 82. Have lost all my friends. But, thankfully, I still have my Mississippi driver's license. ……. Sent in by: giff1500

… ”Hey Vern” Vern works hard at the Phone Company but

spends two nights each week bowling, and plays golf every Saturday. His wife thinks he's pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club.

The doorman at the club greets them and says, "Hey, Vern! How ya doin?"

His wife is puzzled and asks if he's been to this club before. "Oh no," says Vern. "He's in my bowling league."

When they are seated, a waitress asks Vern if he'd like his usual and brings over a Budweiser.

His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, "How did she know that you drink Budweiser?"

"I recognize her, she's the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey."

A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Vern, starts to rub herself all over him and says... "Hi Vern. Want your usual table dance, big boy?"

Vern's wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Vern follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. Vern tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every 4 letter word in the book. The cabby turns around and says, "Geez, Vern, you truly picked up a real bltch this time."

Vern's funeral will be held this coming Friday.

A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large plastic garbage bags behind

her. One of the bags was ripped and every once in awhile a $20 bill fell out onto the sidewalk. Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, "Ma'am, there are $20 bills falling out of that bag."

"Oh, really? Darn it!" said the little old lady."I'd better go back and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me, Officer."

"Well, now, not so fast," said the cop. "Where did you get all that money? You didn't steal it, did you?"

"Oh, no, no", said the old lady. "You see, my back yard is right next to a Golf course. A lot of Golfers come and pee through a knot hole in my fence, right into my flower garden. It used to really tick me off. Kills the flowers, you know.

Then I thought, 'why not make the best of it?' So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my hedge clippers. Every time some guy sticks his thing through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, “O.K., buddy! Give me $20 or off it comes!”

"Well, that seems only fair," said the cop, laughing. "OK. Good luck! Oh, by the way, what's in the other bag?" "Not everybody pays."

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR

On their wedding night, the young bride approached her new husband and asked for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state, her husband readily agreed.

This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 40 years, with him thinking that it was a cute way for her to afford new clothes and other incidentals that She needed.

Arriving home around noon one day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state. During the next few minutes, he explained that his employer was going through a process of corporate downsizing, and he had been let go.

It was unlikely that, at the age of 59, he'd be able to find another position that paid anywhere near what he'd been earning, and therefore, they were financially ruined.

Calmly, his wife handed him a bank book which showed more than forty years of steady deposits and interest totaling nearly $1 million. Then she showed him certificates of deposits issued by the bank which was worth over $2 million, and informed him that they were one of the largest depositors in the bank. She explained that for more than three decades she had 'charged' him for sex, these holdings had multiplied and these were the results of her savings and investments.

Faced with evidence of cash and investments worth over $3 million, her husband was so astounded he could barely speak, but finally he found his voice and blurted out, “If I'd had any idea what you were doing, I would have given you all my business!” That's when she shot him.
