Most of you who know me know that James and I have never been blessed with children…until NOW. Due to some family difficul-ties, we have a 6-yr-old liv-ing with us. His name is Ne-ven Gill and he’s attending first grade at a school in Princeton.

I was wondering how he would like showing dogs and asked him if he wanted to get involved in the dog shows with me. The South-west Jack Russell Terrier Network trial was in full swing, and I was making ar-rangements with my family to help out with Neven so I could judge on Saturday and have Neven show in the ring on Sunday. A little back-ground - since Neven came to live with us I have trav-eled across the states to judge terrier trials and have left him home alone with Un-cle James. That in itself was a little frightening but it turns out they didn’t burn the house down; piles of dirty laundry were collected and placed in the proper bins, and they were able to feed

themselves, so I’m good with that.

Since we don’t have a terrier of show quality nor one that likes the Confor-mation ring, I asked if we could borrow J7 Sofie, owned by Jean and Bill Wallwin. Jean assured me that Sofie was a very gentle terrier and loved kids. Neven was thrilled to find out he had a terrier to show. When he first saw Sofie he was very excited about her short frame and turned to me and said, “She’s little like me.”

Jean loaned us a show lead, and I was show-ing Neven how to walk with Sofie on lead. Neven was not at the trial site on Satur-day, and he had never seen anyone handle a dog in the ring. Trying to tell him how to walk with her, keep her on his left side, blah, blah, blah was a challenge for me and probably very comical for all those watching us. I was telling him to watch where he was walking because Ne-ven was watching Sofie as he paraded back and forth along the south side of the conformation ring.

Well, it was time; the first class of the day was Child Handler, and Neven was the only entry. He walked right in the ring like he had done this a million times. Sandhi Rogerson was the Conformation Judge; she walked over and intro-duced herself, then asked Neven to walk around the ring with his terrier. Nail bit-ing, I stood at the ringside announcer’s desk and watched. Again, I’ll add he had never seen anyone in the ring, so he’s walking around staring down at the dog when Sandhi walked over to Neven and they both walked side by side around the ring. They stopped and spoke for a little while; I’m not sure what all he told her about terriers, but we have two at home, so he is famil-iar and knows their hunting abilities.

Neven tells Sandhi that Jack Russells hunt birds, rabbits, raccoons, and fox. Meantime there was a group of my favorite people that were standing with me and I heard Lisa say, “Get a picture of Debbie.”

Nancy was taking pictures of Neven in the ring with San-dhi and she turned around to get a shot of me. I don’t remember if I said anything or not because I was totally focused on the ring and Ne-ven’s actions. Well, Sandhi got the blue ribbon and the Child Handler prize and handed them to Neven. He states from the ring “I won first prize” and then my tears started to flow. I couldn’t help myself; it was one of those life moments that will never be forgotten.

For the rest of the day, as I helped at the Confor-

mation ring, Neven had his blue ribbon hanging from his shirt. He helped line up the ribbons for the next class. Every now and then you would see him peeking into his bag he won and pulling out his activity book or a piece of candy, but there was no way he was letting go of the blue ribbon.

At home his ribbon is hanging from his mirror, and on top of the dresser is a framed picture of Sandhi and Neven in the ring. Thank you, Nancy Rice, for the photo.

Neven is excited that he will be attending the Gulf Coast trial with me this com-ing spring. This will be chal-lenging as I’m to be the Trial Secretary and will have to keep up with a 6-yr-old all at the same time. This was one of my greatest moments and I’m sure one of Neven’s too; I had to share!

GUNNISON ~ COLORADO ~ Sue Anne Wilson, Florida

West Elk Terriers has proudly hosted over twelve years of Jack Russell Terrier trials in Colo-rado. In 2013 we have had requests to do something a bit different, so... Instead of trials,

we are planning a fun, new excuse to get together…

JACK RUSSELL SUMMER CAMP ~ 2013

Beginning July 3 through July 17 we will be hosting activities for terriers - GTG, Rac-ing, Fieldwork, Hiking, clinics, puppy practices and for the humans who love them – raft-ing, fishing, golf, hiking, sightseeing, concerts, bonfires, pot-lucks and more.

Don’t miss Fourth Of July in a real American small town with one of the biggest fire-works shows you will ever enjoy. Hot air balloon rides are a tradition. Plan on attending all the fun of a real county fair the second weekend of July with a parade you can be in, PRCA rodeos, and local dances.

Sign up for as many days as you want; we will recommend camping and motels, and you can choose from lots of group activities to participate in. Our Main Street farm will be Camp Central.

Please contact us before April 1, 2013, with your best dates so we can organize rec-reation and coordinate meals. If there is a desire to work your terriers, we can arrange for judges and private locations. Costs will vary depending on activities, but we guarantee friends and terriers will enjoy this Cool, Colorado get away.

Do you like family reunions? As part of the Jack Russell Summer Camp we are plan-ning a West Elk family reunion. Can you imagine twelve years worth of West Elk Terriers in one spot? There will be a big pot-luck dinner, and a chance to meet all your “cousins.” If you are owned by a West Elk descendant, mark July 14th on your calendar and plan to join the fun. Lots of special awards, pictures and activities; be sure to send in a reservation so we will know you are coming!

Contact Sue Anne at [email protected] to get your name on the mailing list and let us know your reservations, ideas and plans; we are looking forward to a "Cool" time of summer terrier fun!!!

All Gulf Coast JRT Network terrier friends planning to attend the January Florida, "Thaw your Paws" terrier trials, West Elk wishes to extend a special invitation to come to a BBQ after-trial party at our Florida home on Sunday January 20th. We are located about five minutes from the trial site, and look forward to hosting a good dinner and social follow-ing the trials. Anyone staying over, Monday we are planning a trip to Disneyworld... ya'll

come!!!

Lisa, I thought you might like to put this little story in the next news let-ter. Debi and her husband are actually retired Air Force, but she writes like a Marine Commander, be-cause she says Jack Rus-sells would be much bet-ter Marines than AF reps. Robyn Reed, RRI, Inc. TX

The Cpls said I should write things to you because I'm now in the JRT Marine Corps. I don't know why, as I don't even like water but I'm glad I am here nonetheless.

The lady the Cpls call Mama saved me. Let me ex-plain. I was in a kennel and I had 1 or 2 babies twice a year. They always took my ba-bies away. Then one day they said I wasn't having enough ba-bies and they were going to get rid of me. I was put in a car and taken to a place. They put me out of the car and drove away. I was on the street so I started looking for my lost babies. I was there for several suns and moons, running from big dogs and scary things. Then a man in a truck caught me with a long stick with a rope on it. Then he put me in a truck with other lost

dogs; we were separated in many little metal cages. It was very frightening and I missed my babies. I fear I will never see them again.

The truck took me to a terrible place. I was manhan-dled in what I believe was a medical examination and a pic-ture was taken of me. I was put in this concrete and metal cell by myself. I stayed there for 3 suns and 3 moons, I think. The win-dows were very high so I could-n't see to be sure. Dogs came and went, some were taken by happy people and some were taken by one man who was very grim. I so dearly wanted to be chosen by the happy people but no one did. They said I was too small and I had a long tail.

Then one day the man came and picked me up. I was so frightened that I kicked and bit, but it did no good. He put me in the truck again with some other dogs. As he closed the door, he told me good luck. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all and maybe that's what gave me the good luck after all.

The truck took us to an-other kennel where a lady came and got me. She called me sweetie and told everyone I had been tagged by Russell Rescue and I needed to be vetted. I went through a lot of hands that day. I was given shots and blood was drawn and afterwards

I was put in another cell with a sign on my door.

The next morning I was-n't fed like the other dogs and about half a sun later, the lady came and got me again. I was taken to a special room with a table and lots of other things. A man commented about my milk, but someone said there were no puppies. Of course there were puppies, but they had been sto-len from me. They gave me an-other shot and I went to sleep.

The next thing I remem-ber, the lady woke me up. I was so sleepy and I felt sick. But she carried me out of my cell and then she handed me to an-other lady who talked to me and carried me to her car. She put me in a crate with a pillow in it. It was so soft I fell back to sleep. A little while later, she woke me again and put me in another crate with the same pil-low. I slept for a whole sun and moon I think. Everyone was nice to me and the lady said I could come out of the crate when I wanted to.

New JRT Marine Recruit Jessie ~ Debi Cole ~ Rescue Agent

14

There are two other Jack Russells that live here. One night they pushed the door open and we all touched noses. They are nice enough to me. They told me I was a JRT Marine Re-cruit and I'd see and do lots of things. The male is Abbott and he's little like me. He's kind of old and persnickety. The

female is named Brid-

get. She's bigger and very bouncy. She wants to play with me but she's frightening and I really don't know how to play. I now am out with them in the room with the noisy box and out-side in a big place with grass. Mama doesn't let us be alone together so I'm not too scared of them.

There's a man here too, but he's very kind to me and lets me lie on his lap. He talks to me in a funny little voice. He's teaching me to catch popcorn and lets me lick his plate. Mama says that he's the reason I'm staying here instead of being put up for adoption. He loves me, and Mama too!

So, here I am in a new pack. My name is Jessie. My babies are gone but I have a new life that is much better than the kennel I was in. I get food twice a day and all the water I want plus licking the plates and catching popcorn. Today Mama

took me to the vet's house. I was very frightened, but every-one patted me and was nice. I was supposed to get my stitches out but last night I chewed them out because they were itching. I didn't know I was supposed to leave them in. Mama says I'm the cheapest dog she's ever had. Mama also tells people that she failed Fostering 101 and I'm going to stay here forev-er. I'm glad she failed.

Recruit Jessie, Firebase Cole

The story Jessie tells is mainly conjecture and guess-work on my part so it is fiction at best. She did have pups but none were found w i th her. She is frightened of the col-lar, the leash and the car. And when I took her inside the Vet’s office she was shaking like crazy poor thing. The vet tech was very nice but there were no stitches in her tummy! I know those stitches were there yester-day but they were gone this morning. Maybe she overheard me say they were ready to come out. But she was very happy to return home. And yeah, I failed Fostering 101, but it’

s been worth it.

This segment of Meet and Greet is from Jean Wallwin, aka “Wallie.” Buffalo, TX

DD: How long have you been involved with JRT's? JW: I have owned JRT’s for 6 years DD: How many dogs do you have? JW: I currently have 3. DD: How did your interest in terrier trials come about? JW: I checked out JRT’s on the internet and saw that there was a trial coming in a month. I decided to go and check it out as I wanted to get a JRT. After walking around and talking to breeders and just folks in general I found a breeder who had a pup for sale. I went to her house later that month to pick up the pup, and she encouraged me to come to a playday for the Gulf Coast Club. One playday and I was hooked.…so hooked that now all the playdays are held at my farm! From the first playday I went to the Piney Woods trial in January of 2007…cold cold cold are the only words to describe that. Thank goodness my breeder was there to show me the way or I may have never gone back to another one!

DD: What events do you and your terriers compete in? JW: We compete in most events…except Agility. We tried that and, although my dog is great on lead, his owner is too out of shape and holds him back from being the best he could be! DD: What is your favorite event and why? JW: I have to say racing is my favorite as it is the event that got me hooked to going to trials…and that was with my little 10” girl that I was racing at the time and, although she was never a winner, she certain-ly loved to do it and had the enthusiasm to keep my interest.

DD: What are your pet peeves related to terrier trials? JW: Wish there was a better way to let folks know what their dog’s placement was in racing heats. I hate having to ask and most of the time no one really wants to tell you. So you have to just “guess” if you need to come back for another race.

Cont...Roving Reporter ~ Denise DeCosta Clockwise From The Front: River Bottom Scout, High Range Texas Blaze, J7 Sofie. Bill Wallwin & Grandkids!

DD: Can you relate a favorite story or favorite trial moment? JW: The best moments of a dog trial are the ones that you look up and think to yourself, “gosh I have been here all weekend and I have not worried about anything else that may be going on in my life.” I be-come completely relaxed, and I really enjoy being around others who have the same interest as me. Al-so, my sister now owns a JRT (sibling rivalry), and it has given us a common interest as I have gotten her hooked on trials as well. DD: How about your roughest moment? JW: Roughest moment was when my father passed, and I worried how would I find a place to board my

dogs on such short notice……….then my club rallied together and took care of transporting my dogs to

the kennel of another club member and caring for them until I returned from out of state. That type of ca-

maraderie is very hard to find, and I am truly blessed to be a part of such a great group of folks.

DD: How do you balance terrier trials and all of the preparation with the rest of your life? (Do you

still have a "rest of life"?)

JW: I use my vacation time from my full time job to attend trials…actually trials HAVE become my vaca-tions. Plus I have met so many wonderful people and made so many very good friends thru these dogs that using my vacation time to spend with these folks is actually a true blessing.

DD: What do you do in the real world to support the (expensive) terrier hobby? JW: I work full time at a major cancer center in Houston. DD: What are your plans for the 2013 terrier trial season? JW: Go to as many as I can get time off for! One year I actually went to 11 trials…I was hooked! DD: Do you work your dogs? If so where and with whom?

JW: I have not been able to actually work my dogs but would like to if given the opportunity. I’m usually planning a playday or attending a trial when the weather in Texas is geared for working a dog. I would like to take this time to ask all my readers to please take the time to be a part of the Meet and Greet. We get to know a little about our club members and put a face with a name. Speaking for myself, I know the dogs’ names but don't know the owners. Just answer the questions in your own words, doesn't have to be fancy, let's just make it fun. Charlie Creek MacDuff (August 21, 1994-June 13, 2011)

It has taken me almost a year to be able to write this and get through it entirely. MacDuff was my

heart dog, my first agility dog, my second JRT, my friend and partner for almost 17 years. His

nicknames include Mac, MacBoy, Duff, Duffers, Devil Dog, Mackers and at times of being a real

JRT, a few other choice words. MacDuff’s sire was Button Top Bill, one of Flo Clark’s dogs and

out of Newmarket Sally by Briarpatch Jason. Even though we didn’t start agility until he was two

years old, he earned many, many titles. In the beginning, he would do four obstacles, run off and

hunt and, as we all know, that’s a JRT’s natural instinct. Before I found agility, I decided to come

to a JRT trial. At that trial I met someone who really introduced me to the Jack Russell Terrier.

That was, at that time, Barbara Adameic, now Dickinson and she and I became great friends, trav-

eling to several JRT trials, including Nationals, together. She was thrilled that I wanted to not on-

ly do JRT things like Racing and GTG with my JRTs but agility and obedience. MacDuff earned

his GTG certificates in 1997 and was Racing Champion several times until he started fighting on

the track, so we quit racing. Barbara encouraged me to continue on the quest of teaching him

obedience and agility. I persevered through his antics because I knew he really enjoyed agility

and I was not giving up. I knew he was so talented that he could become a star. It took a while to

train him in obedience, but eventually he really loved to do obedience along with agility. He was

just such a happy dog when working with me, although he had this bit of aggressive tendency,

but only when another dog got in his space. I learned how to manage that, and together we

earned over 120 titles as lifetime partners in agility and obedience. The most memorable were his

USDAA Lifetime Silver and Silver ADCH, his ASCA AtCH, his NADAC Natch. His other accom-

plishments included: Top Ten placements in USDAA for six years; 2004 All Around Performance

at the USDAA Nationals, second in the 2005 USDAA Veterans Grand Prix, and he won a total of 9

JRTCA National Championships in agility and obedience. At the age of 16, he won his TMAG in

Teacup Agility. But above all he was my baby boy, my heart and soul; we built a relationship that

I never had with any other dog. He was the reason I got into agility and training dogs. He taught

me so much and inspired me to learn more about training dogs. He was the inspiration for Gold

Medal Dog Training Center.

20

He never slowed down until he was about 13 or 14 but he could still make time on a USDAA

course. As he aged, he became a bit of a grouch but aren’t we all as we age? This dog in-

creased my love for Jack Russells, tenfold. I know now that I can never be without a JRT. I fell

head over heels in love with the breed and it was because of MacDuff. He gave me comfort in

time of loss and heartache, he snuggled beside me in my chair and in the bed, and he brought me

much joy and happiness throughout the years. He would lick my tears from my eyes. If I had a

bad day at work, a smile would come on my face when I opened the door to hear his greeting me.

He nursed me through a divorce and some very hard and tough times. MacDuff gave me uncon-

ditional love. Ok, I just started crying again, but I’m trying to make them happy, remembering

tears. So those people who say that dogs can’t do these things are totally wrong.

To my friend and long-time companion, MacDuff, I want to say that I so miss you but I know you are in good hands, with my sister and mom taking care of you now along with the good Lord. I will see you again someday. I always tell my friends who lose their dogs that the reason God made dogs to live such short lives is so that we humans can enjoy and treasure more than just one dog in our lifetimes. I truly do believe that. MacDuff, I hope you are running, jumping, rac-ing, chasing those varmints up there in heaven and having a ball. I love you and I’ll always miss you every single day.
