GUILD PINS WILL BE FOR SALE AT THE AUGUST MEETING FOR $5!
2013-2014 OPEN BOARD POSITIONS The purpose of our guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educate mem-bers and provide for the interchange of information. We rely on the talents of ALL guild mem-bers to function. It is very important to have people step up and volunteer for the open board positions. The board positions are two years terms and include attending a monthly board meeting. General information regarding each of these positions can be found in Article III—Board of Directors Duties in the Eastern Polk Quilters’ Guild By-Laws. ** Vice-President ** Treasurer ** Member-at-Large ** Program Chair — looking for possibly co-chairs or a small group ** Newsletter If you have an interest in one of these positions or you would like more information or you know of someone who would be a candidate for a board position, please contact Marsha Horner at 515.979.7218 or Marlee Jennings at 515.965.8094.

CRAFT SHOW WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT!!!! The Craft Show for this year will again be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines on November 10th from 9 to 3 pm. Gundel Basart is chairing the sale, so please contact her with any questions. Included in this newsletter is the list she has so kindly pro-vided us with TONS of ideas, so now we have NO EXCUSES!! The Craft Show is a big moneymaker for the Guild, so the sooner we all get started on mak-ing things to sell, the better!
DENISE SPRAIN TRUNK SHOW AT GUILD MEETING NEXT MONDAY
Denise Sprain from the Iowa Falls Sewing Center will be presenting a trunk show of her quilts, projects, and some of her newest and best patterns. Since the workshop for the Christmas Tree Skirt that was to be held on Sunday was cancelled, Denise will be bringing the pattern to the meeting on Monday, along with many, many more items from her store. She and her husband will set up the items before the meeting begins, so be sure to arrive early if you would like a chance to shop. They will also be leaving early so they can get back to Iowa falls and prepare to open the shop on Tuesday morning.
CONGRATULATIONS TO SHARON MEADOWCROFT
Forgive me if I missed other winners at the
State Fair, but there were sooooo many quilts
and this one did stand
out. Sharon received a
first place blue ribbon
for a beautiful quilt with
baskets of 3 dimen-
sional flowers. Hope
you saw it. If you have
not been to the fair yet,
it’s on the lower level of
the Varied Industries
Building in the room
with all the first place
quilts.
A NOTE FROM MARILYN NIELSEN
To all Guild Members:
Thank you so much for your donation of
fabric and snippets for the quilts and pil-
lows we make for My Brother’s Keeper in
Mitchellville. It is your generosity that pro-
vides us the goods for our charity. We ap-
preciate everything you do and a great BIG
THANK YOU to everyone.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Nielsen

COMMUNITY SERVICE For 2012 we have had 120 quilts donated to ChildServe and the Fire Department. Your talents and generosity is just fabulous. Be sure that you continue to sign your name to the Community Service Board when you make your donations of quilts or to the banner project. We will be having a drawing from these names at our December guild meet-ing. Since we are having such a good year, your EPQG Board has decided to add an additional 2 gift prizes. You will now have a chance to receive one of three prizes. A special “Thank You” goes out to Cindy at Quilters Cupboard for her contribution of three $10 gift certificates. There will be one in each of the prize packages.
CHILDSERVE BANNER PROJECT
We have received a request from ChildServe to help out with a project making banners,
flags and napkins to decorate the walls and tables of their café. If you are interested in
participating, please pick up an information sheet at the sign in table at the guild meet-
ing, Any questions please call Linda Smith at 265-0429 or email [email protected]
After making a delivery to Childserve in July, the Guild received a thank you.
“Please thank all the
wonderful ladies that
made and donated all the
beautiful quilts. I can’t
tell you how much it
means to the children
when they can pick out
their own quilt. You all
have a gift/talent and we
appreciate you sharing it
with our children.”

August Refreshments Refreshments this month will be provided by the members listed for Aug. The member whose name is first in the list each month is the co-ordinator for the refreshments for that month.
Please remember the responsibili-ties of the refreshment committee each month: 1) Supply the goodies. 2) Supply the paper and plastic
utensils. 3) Clean up after. 4) Take garbage out. Dumpster is
right outside the back door. 5) Left over paper supplies may be
left in our storage room, next to the kitchen.
It is important that each one of us remains committed to these small responsibilities each month. Thanks!!!!

FIREHOUSE QUILT PATTERNS REMINDER
This is a reminder that the patterns for the firehouse quilts
need to circulate. If you have one, could you please return
it to the next meeting so someone else can use it.
Gundel took 4 quilts to Fire-station #1 downtown and met
the Chief. He was very appreciative of our efforts. Now,
each investigator carries 5 quilts in the car. The Chief and
his crew packed all the quilt individually in large zip loc
bags and they look very nice that way. Let’s keep them
coming!

2012 Programs and Events SEPTEMBER 16 WORKSHOP ECHO SHAPE IMPROVISATION
SWEATSHIRT JACKET
Join Jennifer Bernard on Sunday, September
16th at 1pm at Lutheran Church of the Cross for
an afternoon of creative fun turning a sweatshirt
into a fun jacket. You will be altering a sweat-
shirt to to open down the front, bias bind the
edges, and extend the edge of the sweatshirt with
piecing. You will choose from 4 shapes — a
heart, a leaf, flower, or square, then cut them out
as smaller and smaller echoes, scatter them crea-
tively over the sweatshirt and fuse in place. The
edges of the shapes will need to be buttonhole
stitched or zigzagged. (The technique will be
demonstrated in class, but you will not be able to
to finish all the stitching in the afternoon work-
shop.) Rickrack, bias stems, and button can be
added for more improvisation! You will learn to
make pockets from from the shapes and add
cuffs to the sleeves, and also how to get a better
fit to those boxy sweatshirts.
This jacket does not have a written pattern, so if
you want to create a unique improvised jacket
come join in the fun at the workshop.
