2015 SUMMER WHITMAN INTERNSHIP GRANT (U.S. ONLY) PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Student Engagement Center invites eligible students to apply for funding through the Whitman Internship Grant program. PROGRAM OUTLINE AND REQUIREMENTS Any Whitman student who has completed their freshman, sophomore or junior year and is returning

4. Completed applications must be received before either deadline. We encourage you to apply early if possible (March 4th), however, applications will be accepted until April 15th. An application will not be reviewed unless all five items are included. No other materials will be accepted.

5. Students will be notified within two weeks after the deadline(s) of the funding decision. If you apply early (March 4th) and do not receive funding you can re-apply with an improved or different internship project using the second deadline (April 15).

6. Students awarded grants must attend one mandatory workshop before the end of Spring semester. Several workshops will be held in April and early May.

7. Students who receive funding for these internships will be required to share their experience with the Whitman community in some public manner during the semester they return to campus.

EIGHT COMPONENTS OF THE APPLICATION

There are EIGHT components in this application process and an ADDENDUM. There are FIVE PARTS that students need to turn in to the Student Engagement Center as part of their application.

1. PART 1: CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS – Please make sure to read this document carefully and write your application accordingly (page 3).

2. PART 2: SUPERVISOR INFORMATION – Please hand this information sheet to your supervisor and review the guidelines and terms of employment with them (page 4).

3. PART 3: APPLICATION – Needs to be typed and emailed to the SEC along with PART 4 and 5 of the application (page 5). Please follow the link on the top of page 5 to fill out the Google Form. It is part of the application and must be completed before you turn in your application.

4. PART 4: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS and PART 5: RESUME – Both parts need to be typed and emailed to the SEC along with PART 3 of the application (page 6).

Please assemble PART 3, PART 4, and PART 5 of the application as one single file and email to Marisol Becerra [email protected] no later than:

5. PART 6: STUDENT AND SUPERVISOR CONTRACT – Original signatures needed. Please turn in original to the Student Engagement Center (page 7).

6. PART 7: STUDENT PERMISSION FORM – Original signatures needed. Please turn in original to the Student Engagement Center (page 8).

For PART 6 and PART 7, which contain original signatures, please bring, mail, fax or – for students who are applying from a location outside of Walla Walla– email a pdf format to the

SEC no later than:Wednesday March 4, 2015 at 5:00 pm if you choose to apply early (1st Deadline)

Wednesday April 15, 2015 at 5:00 pm if you choose to apply later (2nd Deadline)

7. PART 8: OPTIONAL REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS – This is an application for additional support to cover costs related to the internship. Applicant must demonstrate financial need. If completed, budget proposal needs to be included with PARTS 3, 4, and 5 of the application (page 9).

8. ADDENDUM : Please provide your supervisor with the U.S. Department of Labor information about unpaid internships described on the sheet attached in the addendum.

PART 1 – CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

To maximize your chances for funding, please carefully review the following criteria on which proposals will be evaluated and prioritized. (Note – part of the experience of this internship is the application process, so the quality, thoughtfulness and accuracy of your application will be taken into consideration!)

A. You must have been offered the internship before you can apply for the Whitman Internship Grant.

B. Applications are evaluated on the quality of how they are written and presented. Details and clear explanations will greatly increase your chances of being funded. Carefully answer all questions on application form. Please proofread before you submit your application!

C. Your proposed internship must be relevant to your professional or career interests, or educational goals. The majority of your time at your internship should be spent in activities designed to gain professional experience and stimulate learning.

D. The College expects that you will receive consistent feedback and guidance from your supervisor. Be sure to include the criteria for evaluation, including how often and what type of feedback will be provided by your supervisor.

E. Evidence of your personal initiative and commitment to the position is also important. In your application you should describe the process you went through to research, develop and obtain the position.

F. Your supervisor must read the entire application and sign the contract.

G. Applications must be typed on a computer.

H. Short answer questions should be written in your own words. Please do not copy information from the organization or business’s website or position description.

I. A relative may not supervise the internship.

J. If you have previously worked in the internship or with the organization or business, you must demonstrate an increase in responsibility from previous experience.

Grant awards are made on original proposals and will not be transferred to an internship at a different site or for another position.

A mid-summer report, on-site photo, final survey, and participation in an autumn reflection are required.

PART 2 – SUPERVISOR INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SUPERVISORS

The funds for the Whitman Internship Grant are allocated by Whitman College. Each student who is selected to receive a funding grant will receive $2500 (standard deductions will be withheld).

Students are eligible for this grant the summer following their freshman, sophomore or junior year, and in a few cases, during their senior year. They must be in good academic and conduct standing with Whitman College.

GUIDELINES FOR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

1. Internships must be relevant to the professional or career interests, or educational goals of the student.

2. A student may not work for a relative.

3. In order to qualify for the grant, the internship must be unpaid.

4. Students must answer seven short answer questions as part of the application. The committee evaluating the applications will be place significant weight on how the student describes the proposed internship.

You can help with this by providing the student with information about your organization or business, a description of their responsibilities, how they will be trained, criteria and method of evaluation and given feedback, and time spent with you or other supervisors.

5. Supervisors must sign the 2015 Summer Whitman Internship Grant Contract in support of the proposed internship position.

6. Supervisors are expected to provide regular feedback to the student (e.g. written, email, in-person).

TERMS OF INTERNSHIP

The internship must last for 10 weeks during Whitman’s summer break for 20 hours per week.
