The Genesis of the Institution The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has blossomed from the Baroda College which is one of the oldest centres of learning in western India. MSU is the only state University with a residential, unitary character having English as sole medium of instruction. It comprises of 13 Faculties having 90 Departments, 3 constituent colleges and several specialized centres and institutes offering wide spectrum of courses from kindergarten to Ph.D. The Faculty of Arts, one of the best Faculties of the University, owes its genesis to the Baroda College. The idea of establishing a Separate University for Baroda was mooted first as early as 1927 by H. H. Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III himself. The University came into existence on April 30, 1949, at the time of the merger of the Baroda State with the State of Bombay. Necessary changes were incorporated into the constitution of the Baroda College with a view to establishing separate Faculties in the University. Thus, the Baroda College, one of the oldest Centres of learning in Western India, came to be known as The Faculty of Arts under the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

It is a fusion of Indian and Byzantine arches and domes in brick and polychrome stone. The main dome located above the Premanand Hall (Central Hall) is the second largest dome of Asia; which was modeled after the great dome of the Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur. The structure of the Faculty is rendered unique by the carvings, the floral arabesques, and the gargoyles adorning its exteriors as well as its interiors. Faculty of Arts has preserved the artifacts of tradition and culture in two museums at Department of Archaeology & Ancient History which has collection from Harappan Culture & Gautam Buddha’s relics obtained from excavation by the archaeologists of the University.
