tuRneR’s hIstoRyTurner was a community with no official

name from 1856 until 1859. When the first post office was established in 1859, it was dubbed “Farmer.”

In 1879, it was renamed Turner. Brooks researched that and can’t prove it; but she’s relatively sure how Turner got its name.

“There was a railroad yard in Argentine; and it sent railroad cars to the Farmer train platform to turn around,” she said. “’Take ‘er down and turn ‘er around,’ they’d say. That’s the most likely way that Turner was named. I believe that because railroading was really flourishing then.”

That circular platform was in front of the train station that stood on Kansas at 55th, in Turner’s main downtown area. Turner was annexed by Kansas City, Kansas, between late 1965 and early 1966; but the name stuck.

The Wyandotte County Fair usually runs in late July. It usually features livestock exhibitions, country-music concerts, rodeo, tractor pull, demolition derby, carnival rides, a 4-H livestock auction, concerts and several more attractions. It is an opportunity to learn about agriculture. This past summer, it was a 4-H Fair only, as the transition is being made to a new fairgrounds. Why I like the Piper area:Dave Hurrelbrink, August Resources:

“Room, trees, good neighbors and good location. Plus it’s in Wyandotte County, close to the shopping and excitement out west.”

PIPeR’s hIstoRyAs many communities in Wyandotte

County, Piper was once a village, but currently it is a neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas.

In his 1911 “History of Wyandotte County,” Perl Morgan described early-day Piper: “Piper, also situated on the Kansas City, Wyandotte & Northwestern Railroad, on the southwest corner of section 28 and the northwest corner of section 33, township 10 north, range 23 cast, was laid out in September, 1888, by L. E. Scott, Margaret Scott, John Waldron, Ella L. Waldron, W. S. Brown and S. A. Brown, the proprietors of the town site which embraced forty acres. The village contains two general stores, a blacksmith and wagon shop, railroad depot, telegraph and express office, etc., and a population of between two hundred and three hundred.”

Today, Piper has been one of the fastest-growing communities in Wyandotte County, and a large boom in housing has been followed by commercial expansion at the nearby Legends Outlets and Plaza at the Speedway.

Village West and surroundings a prime destination

The Village West tourism district and surrounding area sports some of the top retail and entertain-ment attractions in the state. Exciting news this year was the groundbreaking for the new $386 mil-lion Hollywood Casino to be located at the Kansas Speedway, a new 18,000-seat professional soccer stadium being built at The Legends, and also a new office complex for 4,000 workers. The amenities here are not just for visitors. Here’s a quick look at some of the components that have made Village

West a model tourist destination.

cabela’s declares itself the foremost out-door outfitter in the world. This retailer is a destination for tourists as well as local residents, drawn by unique in-store features— like a fish pond and other exhibits— that add an educa-tional atmosphere.

Before Kansas stopped ranking tourist destinations, Cabela’s topped the statewide list, drawing more than 2 million visitors in less than six months. More than half of those customers came from 200 miles away or far-ther. A customer-oriented business philosophy broke this family start-up into the New York Stock Exchange in the past few years.
