Series 1: Personal Papers, 1964-2002Private dinners and events attended or hosted by Dennis Foley between 1965 and 2002, includingoriginal artwork for menus and programs. Items document the various wine organizations and personalevents attended by Foley. The events range from small dinners of a few friends to large professionallyorganized dinners and tastings. There is information about several large national organizations includingthe Bacchus Society, International Wine and Food Society, and American Institute of Food and Wine. Thisseries is divided into four subseries: Dinner Events, Wine Tasting Notes, Original Artwork, and PersonalEvents and Clippings.

Subseries 1.1: Dinner Events, 1965-2002 Programs and brochures, often including annotation by Foley,for larger dinners arranged alphabetically by the hosting organization. Items from other wine events arearranged chronologically and pertain to small, one time events attended by Foley. The personal notebooksdinners, wines, and menus from private dinners, are arranged chronologically. Honored guests at theprivate dinners include Bing Crosby, Harry Waugh, Joe Hietz, and W. Clausen.

Subseries 1.2: Wine Tasting Notes, 1968-1997 Formal and informal wine tastings and Foley's personalnotebooks, loose leaf notes, and printed notebooks from large scale tastings.

Subseries 1.3: Original Artwork Sketches and mockups of menus and programs for private dinners,several examples can be found in subseries one.

Subseries 1.4: Clippings and Miscellaneous Papers The newspaper clippings relate to various aspectsof the wine industry and to events attended by Dennis Foley. Miscellaneous papers that do not relate towine, but instead highlight other personal activities and are arranged chronologically.

Series 2: Business Papers, 1972-2002This series mostly consists of files, arranged chronologically, and created by Dennis Foley for variousevents, wine tastings, and formal dinners, which he produced or attended as an emcee, judge, host, orauctioneer. Some of the files correspond to events from series one. Other papers document DiamondOaks Vineyard, Dennis Foley Wines Ltd., and a wine collector seminar held at Princeton University.There are copies of Rarities and Underground Wine Journal, 1991-1999, publications that Foley editedfor several years. The periodicals discuss the growing interest in wine in America and describe particularwines and wineries.

Series 5: Esquin Imports Wine Merchants, 1962-1981Newsletters, order forms, wine and price lists, mailing envelopes with wine-related cover art, andglassware catalogues. Dennis Foley began his career in the wine industry at Esquin Imports WineMerchants, located in San Francisco. The bulk of the material was produced by Esquin Imports between1962 and the early 1970s. The newsletters contain a wealth of information about the wine business duringthese years. In the mid-70s, Esquin Imports changed its name to Draper & Esquin Wine Merchants. Thecompany began focusing not only on imports, but on local production under the label Chestnut Hill. Thematerial from Draper & Esquin Wine Merchants dates from the late 1970s to the 1980s and is comprisedof catalogues and pamphlets. The series is divided into five subseries: Newsletters; Wine & Spirits PriceLists; Other Esquin Papers; Draper & Esquin Wine Merchants; Esquin Imports Reference.

Subseries 5.1: Newsletters, 1963-1976

Esquin Imports Newsletters, with corresponding order forms and envelopes, running monthly fromJanuary 1963 to July 1976. The newsletters contain descriptions of wines, report on wine growers andmakers, and describe buyers' trips in search of wines. Esquin International Wine Guild Newsletters, 1968,include membership applications, an invitation to join, and membership benefits pamphlets.

Subseries 5.2: Wine & Spirits Price Lists, 1962-1975

Fifteen pamphlets comprised of price lists and related information. Some of the pamphlets feature wine-related cover art, similar to what is on many of Esquin's mailing envelopes.

Subseries 5.3: Other Esquin Papers, 1963-1966

Esquin Imports order forms, envelopes with cover art, and catalogues of glassware produced for Esquin.The order forms list wines and their prices and include information about placing orders, but differ from theorder forms that accompany the newsletters.

Subseries 5.4: Draper & Esquin Wine Merchants, 1977-1981

Seven catalogues containing the complete listing of the cellars of Draper & Esquin, plus histories of winesand wineries. There are fifteen pamphlets highlighting new arrivals and wines of special note.

Subseries 5.5: Esquin Imports Reference, 1963-1970

Correspondence, price lists, and pamphlets from other wine merchants and educational pamphlets aboutwines and the regions from which they come.
