Processing InformationAs the collection was acquired over time, it had been arranged in two groups of material which wereintegrated and reorganized when the collection was processed in 2010-2011. The first group consistedof annual gifts received during Betsy Beinecke Shirley's lifetime, which were interfiled into five series:I. Manuscripts and Illustrations; II. Printed Ephemera; III. Objects; IV. Native American Materials; andV. Manuscript Items Removed from Books. The second group consisted of material bequeathed tothe library at Mrs. Shirley's death and was acquired as one accession in January 2005; this section wassorted into categories for artwork and manuscripts, then arranged by size in numbered boxes. Materialsformerly in Series V of group one have annotations giving the call number of their earlier location/volume, such as "Removed from Shirley 3954."
Mrs. Shirley had custom-designed decorative boxes created to store various items in the collectionbut, for the most part, the boxes were not made from acid-free materials. Most of the items wereremoved before being filed in the present arrangement; a selection of her boxes were retained fordisplay purposes and are housed at the end of the collection. In addition, many items had been framed
Page 4 of 91

for display in her home or for museum/library exhibition loans; seven were left in frames and appear inthe Collection Contents list as "Stored in: Art Storage."
The Collector's files series is arranged in Shirley's original filing system. Many of the subject files arrivedin binders and were removed from binders due to preservation concerns and kept in their original order.Card catalogs arrived in card catalog boxes and drawers. The cards were also removed and kept in theiroriginal order.
Associated MaterialsBetsy Beinecke Shirley's collections of children's books and serials, published prints, printed ephemera, and commercially produced objects (including toys, games, and printed kerchiefs) were catalogedseparately. They can be accessed through the library's online catalog, Orbis, using the term "Shirley" inthe "Call Number (Local)" search field.
Betsy Beinecke Shirley (1919-2004)Betsy Beinecke Shirley was born in New York City, on October 2, 1919, the daughter of Walter and KatherineSperry Beinecke. Raised in the city and on Nantucket, Massachusetts, she attended the Spence School inManhattan, and the Greenwood School in Ruxton, Maryland, after which, in 1941, she married Carl Shirley(1916-1996). Betsy Shirley began collecting American juvenile literature in the 1970s, eventually branchingout to encompass original illustrations and manuscripts for children's books, as well as manuscripts, correspondence, and drawings by and about American children, their education, imagination, and play. TheBetsy Beinecke Shirley Collection of American Children's Literature grew to hold thousands of volumesof books and serials, and hundreds of manuscript items and works of original art, many of which weredisplayed throughout her home in Bernardsville, New Jersey. A trustee of the Newark Museum for manyyears, she regularly lent books and original illustrations to museum and library exhibitions, including AChild's Garden of Dreams at the Brandywine River Museum (1989-1990), which was drawn entirely from hercollection. Betsy Shirley died in Bernardsville on September 4, 2004.
Scope and ContentsThe collection holds the non-print component of the Betsy Beinecke Shirley Collection of AmericanChildren's Literature, and contains original illustrations and manuscript material acquired by Betsy Shirleyto complement and enhance her extensive collection of printed books and serials. It consists of drawings, paintings, literary manuscripts, printing blocks, correspondence, and documents related to children'sliterature, and the education and amusement of children. In accordance with her views as a collector, thematerial was divided between that created for literary purposes by both professionals and amateurs (inSeries I) and that of a more historical nature and related to education (in Series II). Series III holds threesmall collections of papers that were acquired as discrete archival groups: the papers of J. Austin Sperry,Leon M. Tyrrell, and Edward Stratemeyer.
In this finding aid, the term "drawing" indicates an original work of illustration art, and does not distinguishthe stages between a preliminary sketch and a finished drawing; for some artists, such as F. O. C. Darley, there are both present. Every attempt was made to assign a specific title, project, or publication to theillustrations in the collection. Original works of art are filed under the artist's name, regardless if theresulting publication is more prominently associated with the author of the text; for example, drawings byFrederick Richardson for Andrew Lang's popular fairy book volumes appear here under Richardson's name.
The Collector's Files series consist mostly of the files that Shirley kept as she collected American children'sliterature. This includes her research, bibliographic information on books, authors, and publishers, andexhibition files. Shirley's collections were used in exhibitions at museums and libraries including theBrandywine River Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and theBeinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

Collection ContentsSeries I. Authors and Illustrators for Children, 1719-20018.38 linear feet (21 boxes)The series contains writings and illustrations related to literary eorts which were created by bothprofessional and amateur writers and artists, primarily but not exclusively American. Found here aremanuscripts, drawings, correspondence, and documents prepared by professionals for pay, publishers, orpublication, and meant to be distributed to thousands of readers. Of note are the more than one hundreddrawings by Palmer Cox featuring his trademark Brownies and Greenies, who scampered across pagesin serials, drug company trade catalogs, and Cox's own books, puzzles, and toys; more than one hundreddrawings and sketches by Felix Octavius Carr Darley to illustrate novels by the various popular authorshe teamed with, including James Fenimore Cooper; more than three hundred drawings by Gelett Burgessof his silly but instructive characters the Goops; and a set of forty-four silhouettes drawn by LivingstonHopkins to illustrate Thomas Bailey Aldrich's translation of Emile de la Bédollière's The Story of a Cat(1878). In his preface, Aldrich praises Hopkins' "ingenious and spirited" drawings which he equates inimportance to his contribution to the publication.
Also here are single and intimate literary eorts by non-professionals that were meant to be viewed andtreasured by family members and friends. Two charming examples are manuscript versions of the popularvolume The Toilet: a Book for Young Ladies, by Stacey Grimaldi, published in London in 1821, and thought tobe one of the earliest works in the "flap book" format. Grimaldi wrote a series of short verses to illustrateimages of toilet articles drawn by his father William; each image incorporated a flap that, when raised, revealed a virtue, such as perseverance, intimated by the poem. The manuscript copies here were madeby unidentified young women in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Charleston, South Carolina, no doubtfor their friends to enjoy as a parlor activity. Another example is a small bound volume titled "Aunt Mary'sStories," written and illustrated by Mary Keely expressly for her nephews William Mason Bailey (1841-1893)and Charles Emerson Bailey (1843-1912) of Waterville, Maine.
Some of the works present are a combination: created by a professional artist for a single person, such as the more than fifty heavily decorated letters and notes written by the painter Frederick StuartChurch to members of the Schley family of New York City and Far Hills, New Jersey, who were amonghis great patrons. The recipients were Grant (1845-1917) and Elizabeth Baker Schley (1843-1910), theirdaughter Evelyn Baker Schley (1885-1919) and her husband Max H. Behr (1884-1955), and the Behrs'daughters Lisbeth (born 1906) and Evelyn Shirley (born 1908). Church's letters describe his activities andoccupations, including restoration he performed on some of the Schley family's Old Master paintings, andare embellished with whimsical ink, watercolor, and crayon drawings, as well as a few photographs andetchings he glued on the pages.
In addition to American writers and illustrators, Betsy Shirley was also interested in American publisherswho pirated works produced in other countries, and in general, documenting the various stages inproducing books for children. The series holds examples showing that New York's McLoughlin Brothers re-purposed images printed in England. The files for Maud Fuller and Miska Petersham include drawings, proofsheets, and book dummies for two of their popular volumes, and there are two book dummies for titlesillustrated by Symeon Shimin. Also present are a small group of engraved wood blocks and metal printingplates used in the production of children's books, as well as for a bookplate by W. W. Denslow.
Series I is arranged alphabetically. Works by unidentified artists and authors are filed at the end, followedby a small group of wood and metal printing blocks and plates.

Series II. American History and Educational Materials, 1640-19664 linear feet (9 boxes)The series reflects Betsy Shirley's interest in the education of children, as well as her general interestin American history, as shown in documents, letters, photographs, and a variety of albums, as well asworkbooks, samplers, and other examples of children's schoolwork. It holds one of the earliest statementsknown regarding education in the American colonies: the 1640 will of George Alcock written in the hand ofnoted teacher John Eliot (1604-1690), then serving as a scribe. Perhaps through Eliot's influence, or that ofthe Reverend Thomas Weld (1590?-1662), who also signed the will, Alcock specified that funds were to beset aside for the education of his children. Penmanship exercises and copybooks are well represented in theShirley Collection, and exemplars abound. Perhaps the most notable are those kept by the young Hancockbrothers, John (1737-1793) and Ebenezer (1741-1819) in the 1750s, which have pages lined with their practicealphabets and script, including those featuring John Hancock's iconic signature; the pages were togetherin one volume when acquired by Betsy Shirley in 1991 but were divided into two groups before they arrivedat the library. Another small volume was filled by Allan Melvill (1782-1832) in 1793 while a student at theWest Boston Academy, a writing school run by Oliver Wellington Lane (1751-1793). Melvill carefully copiedfull business letters, invoices, promissory notes, and announcements into his book in a variety of hands thatmimic copperplate engraving. He grew up to become an importer of French and Italian fancy goods withshops in New York and Boston, as well as the father of author Herman Melville (1819-1891), who appearsin Series I. The cover of the copybook features an etching of "The Macaroni Dray Man" (1791) published byCarington Bowles, which was likely hand colored by the young scholar.
Among others, the five commonplace, penmanship, and autograph albums kept by Philadelphia Quakerschoolgirls and sisters Mary (1797-1827) and Rebecca Trotter (1791-1815) are good examples from thefirst quarter of the nineteenth century, as are the arithmetic workbooks kept by Henry and Mary Conklinand Joseph Rappleyea. Betsy Shirley also acquired a few embroidered samplers to show another categoryof school work created by students, both at home and at school. Schoolwork pieces from the twentiethcentury are fewer in quantity, but include a handmade construction paper booklet holding work by RoscoeHersey (1910-1992, Yale BA 1933, BFA 1935), the son of a missionary and older brother of author JohnHersey; it has examples of Roscoe's arts and crafts handiwork created at the Talbert School in Tientsin,China, in 1914-1917, including paper folding, sewing, weaving, and drawing. A later workbook made bystudent Susan Steinberg holds sewing samples, and two folders of excuse notes from the turn of thecentury show reasons why students didn't attend school at all.
Advice given to children was another collecting area for Betsy Shirley, and here again are importantexamples of letters from John Adams to his grandson George, Benjamin Franklin to his grandson Benjamin,Francis Scott Key to his son Charles, and George Washington to his nephew George. Some pieces in theseries were made simply for entertainment or pleasure, such as the clever album "Pictures from Life,"which was "designed and executed" for Caroline Frothingham Neal by her cousin Ellen in Providence, RhodeIsland, in 1865; it contains collages created using figures cut from fashion plates, with a narrative inscribedbelow in ink telling the story of siblings Fanny and Charley and their friends.
The education of Native Americans is represented by a cache of prayers and catechism texts in the series, written out in the Assiniboine, Chelan, and Clallam languages, as well as a book of texts and illustrationsprepared by students at the Toadlena Boarding School in Toadlena, New Mexico. Betsy Shirley's widerinterest in religion is demonstrated by her acquisition of the diary of Mary Elizabeth Flint Whiting(1823-1891) of Hartford, Connecticut, the young wife of Rev. Samuel M. Whiting (1825-1878), who had beenassigned to Sibsagar, Assam, India, with the American Baptist Missionary Union. Her two-part diary is adaily record of shipboard life, noting events, activities, and sicknesses, interspersed with her thoughts as anewly married wife of one of two young missionaries on the bark Washington Allston, which was returninga group of preachers, teachers, and natives to Assam from Boston. The Whitings served for ten years inIndia, after which they returned to New England and Elizabeth Whiting became secretary of the Women'sMissionary Society in Connecticut.
Series II is arranged alphabetically. Works by unidentified artists and authors are filed at the end.

Series III. Other Papers Betsy Beinecke Shirley collection of American children's literatureGEN MSS 764
Series III. Other Papers, 1836-19680.84 linear feet (3 boxes)The series holds discrete archival collections acquired by Betsy Beinecke Shirley two of which, in contentand scope, fall outside the material held in Series I and II. The first subseries, J. Austin Sperry Papers, does have a slight relationship to children's literature through the few poems and stories written bySperry (1823-1896), a Southern newspaperman, while a youth in Virginia. Sperry attended medical schoolin Baltimore, after which he turned to a career in journalism; he owned and published newspapers inKnoxville, Tennessee, Bristol, Virginia, and Augusta, Georgia, during his lifetime. He also published onenovel, had at least one of his plays produced on the New York stage, and his short stories appeared invarious serials starting in the 1840s. The papers here consist mostly of literary manuscripts, primarilydrafts and unfinished works. Sperry was a distant relative of the Beinecke family through Betsy Shirley'smother Katherine Sperry Beinecke.
The second subseries, Leon M. Tyrrell Papers, holds neither literary nor children's material, but ratherletters and documents relating to the Alaskan gold rush of 1898. It contains six letters sent by Tyrrell(born 1875) to his father Vernon and other family members in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in 1898 and1899, from Wrangell and other locations in Alaska. In his letters Tyrrell describes his activities (sailing, fishing, hunting, hiking, and panning for gold), surroundings (landscapes, including glaciers), companions(fellow prospectors, Indians, birds, and wild animals), and thoughts on a variety of topics. Also includedare eight legal documents regarding placer mine claims that Tyrrell filed on behalf of family and friends inPennsylvania.
The third subseries, Edward Stratemeyer Papers, does concern children's literature, specifically thecareer of one of its most prolific authors and publishers. A native of Elizabeth, New Jersey, Stratemeyer(1862-1930) wrote several series of popular novels for boys and girls, including the Hardy Boys and RoverBoys adventures, and founded the Stratemeyer Syndicate of writers who turned out hundreds of titlesunder pseudonyms. The small collection of papers here concerns Stratemeyer's own life and career, withsome later documents regarding his daughter, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, who wrote for the syndicate. It contains biographical material, correspondence, contracts and other legal documents, story outlines, anopera libretto, receipts, clippings, and photographs which pre-date and supplement the Beinecke Library'sStratemeyer Syndicate Records (GEN MSS 107). Drawings for Stratemeyer Syndicate publications, acquiredseparately, appear in Series I.
Series III is arranged in three subseries: J. Austin Sperry Papers, Leon M. Tyrrell Papers, and EdwardStratemeyer Papers.

Series IV. Collector's files Betsy Beinecke Shirley collection of American children's literatureGEN MSS 764
Series IV. Collector's files, 1829–201135.5 linear feet (40 boxes)The collection files consist mostly of the files that Shirley kept as she collected American children'sliterature.
The strengths of this series are Shirley's collection files, research files, and exhibition files. Shirley'scollection files convey her extensive collecting of American children's literature books and relatedmaterials. Shirley was interested in educational materials for children, Christmas literature, and particularauthors including L. Frank Baum, Louisa May Alcott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. The files includebibliographical information on various books, book prices, and correspondence with booksellers. Exhibitionfiles document the ways in which Shirley's collections were used in exhibitions. This includes preservationfiles, exhibition labels, and museum information.
This series is arranged in Shirley's original filing system. Many of the subject files arrived in binders andwere removed from binders due to preservation concerns and kept in their original order. Card catalogsarrived in card catalog boxes and drawers. The cards were also removed and kept in their original order.
Bookseller catalogues were separated and cataloged individually and are discoverable in Orbis, Yale's onlinecatalog.
The series is organized into nine subseries: I. Subject Files, II. Card catalogs, III. Project and exhibition files,IV. Alphabetized collection files, V. Miscellaneous collection files, VI. Materials removed from books, VII.Loose collection files, VIII. Exhibition and collector's files, IX. Collection files for manuscript materials.
